Publisher's Note
The Museum of Anastacio Goncalves is acknowledged as containing one of the world's most important collections of Chinese porcelain. In particular, it houses an extremely fine collection of Kraak porcelain, considered by experts internationally to be a leading source of reference. The collection is the product of a life-long passion of one man, Dr Antonio Anastacio Goncalves, and is housed in his former Lisbon residence, a magnificent Beaux Arts town house on one of the city's 'New Avenues'. Published in collaboration with the new Instituto Portugues de Museus to celebrate the re-opening of the Museum Collection following an extensive programme of renovation, this book opens with three essays which study the development of the Portuguese trade in porcelain between China and Europe, the development of the art of porcelain design and decoration in China and the formation of the collection of Dr Goncalves. This is followed by the main catalogue of over 160 items from the collection, each illustrated in colour and accompanied by an extended entry giving technical information and placing the item in the wider context of the development of the technique, iconography and aesthetics of Chinese porcelain over six centuries. In addition to the Kraak porcelain, there are examples of early 12th-century Cizhou wares, an extensive collection of blue and white pieces from the 16th- and 17th-century Zhengde, Jiajing and Wanli periods as well as Famille Verte and Famille Rose examples of teawares and armorial vases from several other important groups.
