I recently acquired the Whitman published "An Official Whitman Guidebook" called the " CHERRYPICKERS' GUIDE TO RARE DIE VARIETIES OF UNITED STATES COINS" The Fourth Edition Volume II, Half Dimes to Modern Dollars, Plus Gold and Commemoratives!" Authored by Bill Fivaz - J.T. Stanton. foreword by Q. David Bowers. After purchasing various other U.S. coin variety books and related material with the hope of finding a comprehensive learning and research guide to develop my growing passion for the VAM varieties that Morgan Silver Dollar series is famous for. The above publication has proven to be everything I was looking for, but unable to find. The great benefit of this publication is that it includes very detailed pictures, as well as guiding a reader (weather novice, or expert numismatist) that wonderful opportunities still exist for all collectors. This not only is meant for the Morgan VAM varieties, (which it does address in a manner that exceeded my expectations in every way) but also made myself aware that there are great discoveries still yet in circulation. My daughter and wife will now be able to help discover a potential rarity in their pocket change. Once this happens, and they receive the financial gain I believe this publication will help further the numismatic field more that any other resource or publication available. Thank you for your time reading this review, and I hope that you will be as inspired as I have been. I have not even as of this writing taken a deep dive into this fabulous publication. For yourself, family, and friends do not pass on this learning opportunity! Please take a moment and vote "YES" if you discovered something of value in this review. While I am not trying to be sacreligious, the trio comprising the makeup of this volume could almost be considered the Holy Trinity of coins. There is little doubt that these three gentlemen, together, comprise more knowledge of coins, coin varieties and the hobby in general, than any other group in the world. They come together in this book to share that vast knowledge. Most coins collectors will, at some time, come to the point and say "what else is there to do??" They may very well start looking at there own coins wondering if there is indeed something beneath the surface... something that makes these coins even MORE special. They may very well start to explore the world of varieties. This book would be considered the Bible of coin varieties. Handsomely bound with large spiral rings, the book will lay flat while you examine your coin. Very detailed close up images of just exactly what you need to look for along with the information as to just how things came to be. It is one thing to have a gem, it is quite another to know how this gem came into being. This book tells it all. I paid about 40 bucks at my local dealer (Ace Coins, Salt Lake City) and it is well worth the price. Find one real gem and you have more than recouped the price of the book. Light weight, 447 pages. Kill some of the advertising and this book would be perfect.
