Album Notes With several hundred songs already out on a couple large handfuls of records, the band recorded the twenty-one which comprised the original release of this album (ten more were added to the CD). Unfortunately, record label problems tied up the release for four years. At the time of its recording, CHARMED LIFE was far and away the band's most accessible album, yet sacrifices none of the rawness or believable commitment that had been a hallmark of Half Japanese since the brothers Jad and David Fair first released their homemade duo recordings in the seventies. This time out, better production values and a less dense sonic approach helped make the sound more friendly. It also helps that CHARMED LIFE includes some of the group's most enduring songs--"Love At First Sight," "Penny In the Fountain" and "Red Dress" are all classics. Certain that CHARMED LIFE was one of the finest albums of the rock era, filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig made a documentary on Half Japanese, The Band That Would Be King (which was also the title of one of the band's albums).
Editorial Reviews 3 Stars - Good - ...CHARMED LIFE attains punk perfection with the usual nasal vocals and paltry plucking... Q (09/01/1993)
