This French-issue CD is part of a series documenting all of Parker's early recordings. VOLUME 5 focuses on 1945-46, Parker's much-mythologized year in California, and includes sessions with Slim Gaillard and his Orchestra, various Dizzy Gillespie ensembles, and the first legendary Dial sessions. Listeners may be somewhat aggravated by the Gaillard cuts, cute swing numbers in which Parker's playing takes a backseat to the clever novelty lyrics. The rest of the work here, however, is of a superb caliber. The Gillespie sessions, which include such classics as "A Night In Tunisia," "Shaw 'Nuff," and "Salt Peanuts," are characterized by outstanding playing from vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist Al Haig, Dizzy, and Bird. While the two cuts from Bird's sessions with the Nat King Cole Trio (with Buddy Rich on drums) are bonus treats for collectors, it's the Parker Quintet dates for Dial that provide VOLUME 5's real musical meat here. Included are five famous cuts, "Billie's Bounce" and "Ornithology" among them. Bird's rhythmic and harmonic invention could raze whole cities, and the trumpet playing of a young Miles Davis provides the perfect spare counterpoint to the master's shower of sound. YOUNG BIRD is an outstanding collection and a valuable document of a crucial period for one of the genre's greatest innovators.
