Album Notes Though The Monochrome Set never made it as big as some of its post-punk contemporaries, the group has maintained a devoted cult. Bid, Lester Square, and Andy Warren all played in early versions of Adam and the Ants, but their first singles were arty, smooth, and ultra-sophisticated. A reputation as "XTC's upper-class art school cousins" developed from the early-'80s string of perfect, bouncy satirical pop songs collected on disc one. The more recent material on disc two refines the Set's original sound, trading the manic bounce for gossamer adult pop. If anything, however, Bid's lyrics are more outrT and biting. Of the many Monochrome Set compilations available, CHAPS is easily the most thorough and indispensable. Note that Virgin owns the rights to the band's first two albums, and the selected tracks represented here are actually passable-to-great '90s remakes. The highly recommended original albums are available on one Virgin CD, TOMORROW WILL BE TOO LONG.
