This DVD is a re-release of two 30-minute programs originally released on VHS in the 1980s. Bubbe (pronounced "BUBB-ee", which means "grandma" in Yiddish) is a loving old grey-haired lady who runs a boarding house with an eclectic group of characters who live there. Of course, Bubbe is Jewish and celebrates Hanukkah and Passover. When her grandson and friends come to join in, they are taken back into history, where they epereince the events as if they were living back then. (Bossy Anton become Pharoah in the Passover episode, and Emperor Antiochus in the Hanukkah story). The puppets for this show are great, and the story lines are educational without being preachy. Best of all, both episodes include some great songs -- including a new one for Hanukkah: "We light up the candles ever-y night -- it's a beautiful sight!" I recomend this DVD set both for Jewish families, and for multi-cultural educators who want to include Jewsih holidays in the curriculum.

The traditional songs are a plus to this children's puppet movie. We enjoyed the
pronounciation of some of the words in a fun way, teaching children the importance of their heritage. Overall, this is a fun holy-day film using the family in a positive light. It is always good to see the older generation teaching the younger generation these traditions and a general respect that comes with this. The only negative thing is a couple of the attitudes with the "bad" characters could have been in a milder tone. A discussion about not being rude and that this behaviour is not something to copy. I would have rated it excellent otherwise.

This tape was purchased for an Autisic grandson who focuses on TV characters. This will help him understand to his ablility what the Jewish Holidays are about and how to participate after watching it numerous times. Great teaching aid!
