This release was billed as one volume in "Dr. Eugene Chadbourne's New Archive Of Insanity." As a response to the lament that most of his dozens and dozens of releases prior to 1993 were out-of-print, this 1996 CD roamed freely through assorted projects from the previous decades. From free jazz to protest songs, BARBER SHOP touches on familiar Chadbourne strains and approaches. The songs feature a wide range of accompanying musicians, including Nashville session musicians, his daughter Molly, Violent Femmes members Brian Ritchie and Victor De Lorenzo (with whom he recorded a couple albums in the eighties), and a handful of then-Camper Van Beethoven members (who had previously collaborated on full albums with Chadbourne). Recorded in a variety of studio settings, some sharp and clear, others gleefully diving into lower fidelity, the set is well sequenced and is a fine entry point into Chadbourne's vast output.
