Best Resource on Non-American Carnival Glass

This book by the highly regarded carnival glass authorities Glen & Stephen Thistlewood is a wonderful resource for anyone trying to learn about carnival glass from countries outside of the United States. A CENTURY OF CARNIVAL GLASS is a hefty, large-format book offering hundreds of high-quality photographs of carnival glass from Argentina, China, the Czech Republic, England, Finland, Germany, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru and Sweden. The book contains material found in no other widely available resource on carnival glass -- each chapter provides detailed information on selected international glassworks, pages from non-American catalogs and bibliographic information on various international glassmakers.

A CENTURY OF CARNIVAL GLASS is much more ambitious and interesting than the usual glass collector's book: it's not just another catalog of names, colors, makers and price evaluations. In addition to providing the usual information, Glen & Stephen Thistlewood chart the history of carnival glass: they begin with the first iridized American pieces, explain the evolution of later carnival glass production in foreign countries, and end with chapters on contemporary American glass and the newest knockoffs from Taiwan and Korea. All of this is interlaced with interesting sections that address previously unsolved questions about unidentified patterns. The section on carnival from the Eda Glassworks on Sweden is especially informative.

The authors' other contributions to carnival glass literature include the books, THE ART OF CARNIVAL GLASS and CARNIVAL GLASS -- THE MAGIC AND THE MYSTERY, as well as countless articles. The Thistlewoods were the founders of the carnival glass quarterly called "Network," and they continue to reveal their novel observations about carnival glass through their website, which can be accessed easily by simply typing "Thistlewood Carnival Glass" into Google.

[ADDED NOTE: This book is published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Atglen, PA; pub. date 2001; 253 pages total, with color photographs; large format; two authors: Glen and Stephen Thistlewood]
