Publisher's Note A Tuscan folktale follows the story of wise Caterina, whose father finds a golden mortar in his vineyard and hopes to gain favor by giving it to the king, setting off a series of events that Caterina cleverly manipulates. Jr Lib Guild.
Industry Reviews K-Gr 3 When Caterina, a simple farm girl, impresses the King with her cleverness, he asks her to marry him. Her wit and wisdom, however, soon begin to irritate him, until finally he sends her back home. In several plot twists clever, of course the two make peace and live happily ever after. Peterson's retelling of this Tuscan folktale is fun, spare, and readable, using ample dialogue to move the story along and develop character. The prose blends well with Giannini's artwork, which is done in ink, watercolor, and colored pencils. Children will enjoy studying the pages for details of everyday life, architecture, and landscapes in this Italian region in an earlier time. Of note is an introductory page discussing the tale's sources and variations, as well as commenting on the authenticity of the artwork. An interesting addition to folklore collections.
