High-flying fantasy fun

This terrific animated feature from Hayao Miyazaki about two orphans who join forces to find a floating island in the clouds is ideal entertainment for both kids and grown-ups. The animation is beautiful if not as detailed as in other Miyazaki productions, the characters are lively and unforgettable, and the storyline, although simple, is very well told. The real highlight of the film is Joe Hisaishi's musical score--it's gorgeous.
The DVD release contains a fairly good transfer of the movie in anamorphic widescreen, the original Japanese language track, as well as an English track, which contains a fully orchestrated and extended reworking of the music provided, interestingly, by Hisaishi himself under Miyazaki's approval. The mostly excellent vocal cast provide energetic performances, especially Dola and Muska. The lead characters are a little too mature sounding for their onscreen ages, and the script adaptation is a bit loose in places, but overall it remains a fun, zesty dub.
The extras, on the other hand, are a bit lacking. For a movie that took a frustratingly long time to be released, you'd think there'd be more than just a throwaway gushy intro, voice talent featurette, trailers and storyboards. Oh well, the movie is the real attraction of the set, and for that (as well as a winning option of the original language track and a solid if not flawless dub) I recommend it.
