His job for Federal Express has him traveling the world on a moment's notice, exhorting the company's employees to speed things up--"never turn your back on the clock." When he's suddenly called away for business on Christmas night, his tolerant longtime girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) drives him to the airport. They have their Christmas in the car--and Chuck plunks an engagement ring into her lap right before he gets on the plane, telling her, "I'll be right back." But an unexpected storm cuts the plane's crew off from radio contact and blows them off course. Chuck is the sole survivor of the resulting crash, and washes up on a completely deserted island. Stranded there, he must give up everything that he once took for granted and learn how to survive all alone in the wilderness. From director Robert Zemeckis, CAST AWAY is a story of adventure and discovery surrounding one man's will to stay alive.

Unlike most films, where budget restrictions require shooting the scenes out of order, CAST AWAY was shot in story order. It was also made over a 16-month period with a year-long hiatus in the middle--in which Hanks lost the 55 pounds and grew a beard to show the effects of his time on the island. During this hiatus director Zemeckis made WHAT LIES BENEATH with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. The film was shot in Moscow (where the production shut down Red Square for shooting), at Federal Express headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, in Texas, in Los Angeles (at Sony Pictures Studios and FedEx), and on an uninhabited island in Fiji called Monu-riki. FedEx founder and owner Fred Smith makes a cameo appearance in the film, which was made with the full support of Federal Express. CAST AWAY was the highest grossing film released in the year 2000, making over $230 million. It's a great story about survival as only an actor as great as Tom Hanks could pull off. However, when he hits the big wave and at last makes it off the island, you should just turn it off and call that the ending.... Review ID: 10000000004645491 Was this review helpful? Report this review Because I like Tom Hanks, I liked this movie. It leaves some things up to your imagination, it is very romantic, and at the same time it is a comedy. Very little bad language. Tom Hanks plays a play called Chuck Noland who works for Federal Express, who's always on the go at a moment's notice. He's called away for business on Christmas night and his girlfriend and he have Christmas in their car. When he leaves the car the last thing he says to her is that he'll be right back. Well that doesn't happen. The plane ends up in an unexpected storm, they lose radio contact, they go off course and it crashes. Chuck is the sole survivor of the crash, and washes ashore of a deserted island. While stranded there, he must learn how to survive in the wilderness by himself. A definite must see. Report this review Review created: 10/03/06 by: Cast Away is one of those quiet, wisp-of-a-movie movies that keep you entertained without too much going on. In the movie, Tom Hanks is a FED EX executive traveling by FED EX plane when something goes wrong and the plane plunges into the sea. Tom's character seems to be the only survivor, and he finds himself alone in the middle of an ocean on an island. He lives there for years until he finally makes it back home, only to find that the life he left is completely different (and the love of his life has moved on). Irony is a big part of the picture--helpful items arrive in the form of shipped FED EX packages as they wash up on shore. One particular item, "Wilson", his volleyball friend, becomes his only companion for years. Not much happens, but I think that's okay. It's a nice change of pace and well-acted by Hanks. An enjoyable film with a happy ending. Review ID: 10000000001968773 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
