Groundbreaking High Speed Camera: Casio Exilim F1

Even though many years have passed since I accidentally became a professional photographer, I still am not much of an authority on equipment, but I know what to look for in a good photojournalist’s camera. When asked by the layman what camera I use, I usually reply that it’s a Canon Digital SLR, 6-mega pixels, 20D or 40D…I can’t remember the model number. That’s how I describe my workhorse, the camera that I’ve been using for at least four or five years. I know its limitations, and I know its benefits, and I know how to get what I want from it, sports action, but I can’t remember the model number.

Recently, I was asked by a photography magazine to test the new Casio Exilim digital camera, which, I was told, shot ultra high speed capture of up to 60 still images per second, at 6 mega pixels per image!

It also records movies in full High Definition, STD Def. or High Speed, 1200 frames per second. These specs sounded insane and reminded me of a book project that I worked on a couple of years ago with unbelievable super slow motion video from the CBS Minolta Swing Vision camera. To have this kind of technology in a camera with a street price of around $1000 is amazing, but what does the image quality look like?

Although this camera looks like a Digital SLR, you cannot change the lenses, but the built in unit has a 12X zoom, 36 – 432mm. It has a built in flash, which can fire at 7 frames per second in “Flash Continuous Shutter” mode. The camera records onto SD or SDHC Memory Card, but to process 60-frames-per second quickly, you’ll want to get the highest speed version of these cards.

For the field test, I took this camera on two-weeks of grueling golf photo shoots, working the camera 12 hours a day. Of course I brought my workhorse Canon as my main camera, but left it in the bag most of the time.

The first week was spent covering the International Long Drive Competition in Mesquite, Nevada. This would be a true test for a high-frame rate camera; these golfers have the fastest swings in the world! Some have club head speeds approaching 150 mph!

When trying to capture these big hitters at the moment of impact, when the club contacts the ball, a seasoned sports action photographer would have to shoot the golfer hitting at least a dozen balls. With the Casio, I shot the golfer once, and got several photos in the “impact zone” that I could use. The focusing system seems more accurate than my much more expensive Canon, and the exposure was dead on.

The next week, I shot 15 articles with various high-profile teaching professionals in Scottsdale, Arizona. As I worked my way through the shot list, I played with the “exposure bracketing” mode, which underexposes, overexposes and correctly exposes each capture, ensuring that you get a good image.

I also took some sequences in “Flash Continuous Shutter” mode, using the on-camera flash to light up the shadows on the golfer at 7 frames per second.

This camera stood up to 12-hour days of continuous professional use. Its groundbreaking functions are causing me to rethink how I can capture sports action photography. Although I’ve given it a good workout, I think that I’ve only scratched the surface of what this camera can do.

I bought it for taking high speed video function, and very satisfied. For the price, it's amazing what I'm getting. This camera helps me catch every moment my eyes can't. Unbelievable!

I bought the camera because of its build quality and its high frame rate shooting. The camera has worked wonderfully, especially the slow motion shooting.

It is my opinion that, unless you want the absolute best, the step down model (ex fh20) is much more economical.

My wife bought me this camera this last Christmas and I have hardly put it down since. I was attracted to the slow motion (high speed) capabilities of this camera. Who doesn't like seeing the world in slow motion? It's amazing what our eyes miss.

I have been posting Y/T videos of various projects I've done. The challenge is coming up with new ideas to record in high speed. From shells ejecting from a gun, pellet gun pellets flying through the air, watching airsoft bb's spin backwards, micro-explosions, to making R/C tanks look full scale by filming them in slow motion gives the creative, backyard producer so many neat shots. You often find things showing up after recording, that will surprise you.

Getting good slow motion shots can be challenging with the camera. Good sunlight is needed for higher FPS settings. At 300 FPS (10x slower) lighting is less critical and sunlight shining into a room is often enough.

Besides high speed, the camera has so many other bells and whistles I am still learning them. I recently started experimenting with long exposure night shots. You can literally take a photo inside a dark closet with nothing but a slit of light, and get good pictures. With the preset "BS" (best shot) settings, you can have an array of ready-to-go settings for all types of photos, without having to manually set F-stop, ISO, shutter speed, etc settings. It's very handy.

Auto settings work quite well. You can also manually set everything if you want. Shutter speed from 60 seconds to 1/40000 of a second, ISO from 100 to 1600- F stop, white balance, etc. With so many different variables, novices will often get lost. This novice is happy with Auto settings but I will play with shutter speeds, etc.

Some people look at megapixels when buying a camera. This camera does 6mp. Keep in mind that unless you are printing out super-sized posters, 6mp is plenty for 99% of the people. I would not knock the camera for "only" doing 6mp- it shoots great photos.

The flash works great. The only downfall I found was when shooting objects that are a few feet away, the long-snouted lens of the camera does create a shadow.

Battery life is very good. I've owned digital cameras that went through batteries like a fiend. The Li battery has a lot of power and the charger will charge it in a few hours. I recharge mine every other week or so. I haven't seen a need to buy a spare battery.

One thing I found out when I started shooting videos was it records them in Quicktime format. This is fine if you use editing programs like Sony Vegas, but if you use Windows Movie Maker, you'll need to get a converting program. This was a minor issue.

If you have $1000 and want more than just a still camera or a video camera, the "F1" does everything but make coffee for you.

Does everything an DSLR does but with better HD movie quality . High speed function for slow motion movies area tool that I specifically wanted and this one is great. Best shot features always a plus to have . And shoots in RAW format for superior editing programs.
No regrets buying this camera.
