Great PDA once you get a New Operating Environment
Review created: 05/12/06(updated 11/23/06)

I bought this PDA back in 2001 at an auction house, and was a little dissapointed with the lame features, and plain looking interface... it got shelved.

Now if I sound too enthusiastic, it is because I don't need to buy a new PDA, but can "upgrade" this PDA to be just as good as a "modern" PDA.

I was surfing the net, and came across a website (www.be300.org) and a new Operating Environment (OE) called BAS BeShell. I was so happy because finally someone had created a solution to the watered down OE "Top Menu" from Casio. This new OE acts and looks exactly like Pocket PC 2002/2003, and it is now possible to:

*See your appointments, tasks, and date the moment you turn it on
*Watch movies on it like an iPod video (DivX, XviD, Avi, Mpg, etc.)
*Create and edit Excel documents
*Create and edit Word documents
*Create picture slideshows with music
*Use it not only as a PDA, but an MP3 player as well
*Write (print or cursive) across the whole screen and it will transcribe it for you into text
*Use Pocket PC programs on it (I am using MS pocket streets 2006)
*Use wireless Compact Flash cards for internet or network access (I am using a D-Link 660W CF card that is 802.11 a/b)
*And you can do so much more!

If you are thinking about getting one, do not let one pass you by; grab one of these PDAs, and install BAS BeShell. Once you realize that BAS BeShell functions like MS Pocket PC 2002/2003 and you can run all of your programs on it, you will not be dissapointed!

***For more info and to download BAS BeShell copy and paste below, and no I am not advertising crap, just sharing the knowledge****

Good for a Calendar and Address Book only!

Don't be fooled by this one because of it's Windows Based OS. I've had it for about 3 or 4 yrs. and all it's good for is an address book and calendar.

I bought it because it had a color LCD, it's price and it was Windows based. You can't really do anything with excel files except view them. I've realized I bought a unit that is only good for an address book and calendar and thats what it is used for.

The cover broke within the first year, and the battery has never really held a charge as long as I would have expected it to. It has become very slow with the more info I have input on the calender and address book which does get very frustrating while searching through it.

It does sync to your desktop easy once you have it set up as to what you want it to sync. You just insert it in the cradle and it starts the sync. Once it checks for updates, it gives you the option to review them and decide if you want to accept or reject the sync.

If you can find a new one very cheap and only want it for an organizer (calendar and address book) it's not bad, but don't expect to much else with it.

Casio Be-300 the little PDA that coula been a contenda

While not as flashy as the other PDA's in it's class including it's bigger brothers. the be-300 had a lot of features for it's size and speed including
MP3 player,PHoto viewer and more played AUDIBLE.com content and had a very strong Mod community.

it's downside is that it uses a hybrid Windows CE OS so it didn't play the Real Windows ce Content. but it's an easy to use system above Palm but not quite Windows CE. if you get a good price Go for it. it syncs to WIndows by USB and use COmpact Flash Memory cards

  So so PDA

Note: I have this unit for 4 years - so my review for 4 years of usage.

The good: Stylish, even for a unit as outdated now as the BE-300.. a testiment of its design. This unit had massive numbers of programs when the unit comes with also was a plus - but since out classed by almost all modern PDA. This PDA is a colour PDA, btw

The bad: Terrible batteries life - since this unit is at least 4 years ago - the lith-ion storage is going the way of first generation ipod batteries. However, when I had this unit 4 years ago, its batteries life was less then 48 hours.

The ugly: Also, programs that could be run of this pda is very limited since it was using a cheapo version of window and it wasn't on palm OS. So pretty much the programs that come with the pda was it.

It's modem also was a joke - rather useless.

Conclusion - Well if you can buy one for less then $40 and your pda usage limited to note taking and other minor business related operations, this unit will do fine. But any poweruser should avoid this unit like plague because of its software problem and very short batteries life.

I've had mine since 2002 and still use it. Not the fanciest or geekest, but does the job. I bought a keyboard for mine, now I can type anything anywhere, modem and can connect to the net-dial up tho...-and went thru several batteries. The batteries are a different story. Laptops for less, no I don't work for them, sells them for a reasonable price, and they're easy to put in. Don't get sucked into sending it to Casio to replace the battery. Also, follow the rules of battery memory by letting the battery discharge full b4 recharging or you'll be buying new ones every year. It comes with Casio's Top Menu software which is lame. But I have purchased Expod gold and it allows me to do anything I want. Watch movies, listen to music, etc.... Worth the money. If you want speed and all the bells and whistles, then look else where. This is for those people who cant afford anything high tech but wants something close to it.

  Casio BE-300 rocks!!!
Review created: 05/18/08

This thing is so much fun! If you get one with BEE V2 or one of the other few OS's developed for it, that is. The standard Casio Operating system truly sucks, and doesn't come near exploiting the many capabilities of this versatile and smart little machine.
