Monique Levi-Strauss' book on the Cashmere Shawl reviews, for the first time, the history of the French paisley shawl, from its inception with the reception by the late 18th century aristocrats of Kashmir shawls brought from India, most notably by Napoleon for Josephine. The history of the shawl as a fabulous accessory follows the history of the jacquard loom, the history of fashion and orientalism. Levi-Strauss does a remarkable job taking us through the history with a deep appreciation for the amazing creativity of those who made the shawls. If you're into textiles and design or fashion and culture, this is a must-read.
