Carnivale - The Complete First Season (DVD, 2004, 6-Disc Set)

If you actually enjoy programming of quality then this might be for you. A top-notch period piece, set during the dust-bowl era, with strong supernatural/mythological elements. It may be hard to follow at first, as it only reveals a little at a time, but worth the effort. If you enjoy shows like "Lost" or "Heroes" then this is worth a look.

In my 40 years, no TV program has captured my interest like Carnivale. The characters are rich, complex, interesting, the sets and costumes, masterful (award winning, in fact). To say that Carnivale is about evil vs. good, is over simplifying it. The good guy's not all good; the bad guy's not all bad. And, all of the other characters have an interesting blend of good and bad and everything in between. The program makes the viewer reconsider assumptions about people, about what's important in life. And, it explores a period in history that's relatively untouched in the film world: the Depression lived by people in the southwest and california.

I saw the show on TV, but I couldn't wait to see what the DVDs were like. The quality is superb. Whilst I've not listened to all of the supplemental material, what I've seen and heard has, so far, interested me. It's well done, and worth the money.

If you like this, write HBO. Only 2 of the planned 6 seasons were aired. HBO needs to bring it back!

I don't have HBO and often discover their quality shows after the fact on dvd. I've enjoyed The Sopranos and Sex and the City that way. I actually prefer watching great gulps of show at once and not having to wait for the next week's episodes or the new season to start.

Carnivale is hands down, the best HBO show I've seen. The period detail is incredible. The classic struggle between good and evil is handled masterfully. Shades of gray abound and facts are revealed slowly, so the viewer is never quite sure where he stands. The exotic, erotic atmosphere of the carnival and its quirky characters draws you in from the first episode and never lets go.

I was hesitant to buy this show at first, knowing it only lasted two seasons. I was afraid to find it had an unfishined ending. But faithful fans assured me the second season close would not leave me unsatisfied. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Season Two to find out if that's true and, of course, to answer that age-old question--what happens next?

This is as good as it gets. At Carnivale's core is story of good versus evil. The show makes you guess who is which, and shows that many (like us) are a little of each.

The filming, acting, production are all first rate. As you watch the show, you really do feel like you are travelling with a 'bunch of freaks' through the dustbowl of the 30's. The cast is so put together so well that you end up interested in everyone's story.

If you're a fan of slightly off-centre shows (think Twin Peaks, but better), you'll love Carnivale. I can best recommend this series by saying that if you watch Season 1, you'll be buying Season 2 immediately afterwards.

This CD set will be my 3rd time through over the years, and like a good book, it's more enjoyable each time.

Warning, this series is brutally honest. It's not for kids. You'll see nudity, hear swearing and watch some intense scenes.

This show is creepy and great. Well acted, well written, sexy and very dark. This show makes you want to run away with the circus. Or hide under your bed. Or both.

All the good shows that once dominated HBO are gone ladies and gentlemen. This was the crowning gem of them all. Forget the Sopranos! CARNAVALE had it all, sex, drama, violence, love; it was everything a viewer could hope for and more! What an amazing show! Thank god for the DVD format as early cancellation took this compelling plot driven masterpiece off the air, leaving a void in the HBO line up that only ROME could fill. And even that show was given an early grave due to production costs. It was certainly NOT for lack of viewers! What can I say? Shows like the Sopranos are cheap to produce as compared to the period piece that CARNAVALE was.
Rooted in the era of the Great Depression, the show followed a small time circus troop that traveled small town America in the 1920’s. Visually the show was stunning. It had a gritty genuine quality that really embodied the era. I will say this; the show was comprised of a lot of different elements: the show was supernatural in nature, but would go whole episodes without supernatural events rather it would focus on character development and the progression of the plot which included religious symbolism all leading up to an epic battle between the forces of good and evil. A remarkable show written by gutsy talented people. If HBO hadn’t been so quick to cut its loses and cancel this show so quickly maybe I wouldn’t have canceled HBO from my cable subscription.
CARNAVALE is an interesting show that would appeal to an intelligent audience. Do yourself a favor and pick up your copy of season one today!

This is a very compelling dark drama, involving the forces of good and evil. Set in depression era America in the dustbowl and California, a troupe of carnies and freaks wanders the midwest at the behest of the "Management", an unseen, mysterious leader, who knows all of the answers. The unknowing hero, Ben, is on a journey of self searching, while on the run from the law. His opposing force is on the same mission. In this addictive drama, the stage is set for the forces to collide. A must see for the unconventional. My only dissappointment is the fact that all six seasons were not made, I have to get my fill with two seasons. Get this one, and join the cult.

This series of stories was run on HBO in the early 2000's. It is a mystical fascinating saga of a travelling carnival that moves from town to town in the 1930's Dust Bowl Era. Brace yourself, and prepare to become stuck to your tv . I'm sure it will capture your attention, and entertain all who venture with the Carnivale.

Carnivale only had two seasons and although the first season seemed a bit slow, it was entertaining. If you are a Nick Stahl fan, you get to see a bit more acting from him. Clea Duvall is such a pleasure to watch in this show. It really is too bad that it was cancelled because just as the season finale had both characters meeting (very Stephen King's The Stand!!!!) we get cut off. It was tough cuz' you wanted to see more and know more about what would happen next. Hopefully, it will air again maybe some other station will pick it up.

Also, both seasons were sent to me quickly and I was able to get my friend a perfect birthday gift!.

The DVD's are flawless, no skips, scratches or wear. The box is -as new-, and the price was half the cost of amazon.com or other ebay auctions. What more can I ask? I received this DVD box set very fast and in great packaging. I will most def buy from this seller again when I am in the market for DVDs. Thanks for a great experience :)

This is one of the best shows ever created. I had to have it!!!!!!!!!!! If you like crazy movies such as 12 monkeys, constintine, dogma this show you must watch. i give it a 100 out of 10

This is one excellent series! Characters are very different but somehow we can relate to their idiosyncrasies. At first sight you'll think, "What?" but quickly become engrossed. Watch it!

This is a very unique story -unlike today tv and life. If you enjoy
the different and unknown this will surly keep your intrest to see
what the next episode brings. It is non violent -no sex - not even
swearing. If you care for the looks of life in the early 1900s

I bought these DVD's because I so enjoyed the series on television. I'm hoping to find the second season as reasonably priced as the first. It is such a unique story format and something I'll enjoy watching repeatedly.

Carnivale was a brilliant show that shared the production values of Deadwood and Rome, it's HBO brethren. The cinematographer did such an amazing job recreating the look of the dust bowl era, that you can almost taste the dust and grime that permeates the traveling show. The settings and characters are rich and full of detail, and the plot lines are mysterious and thought provoking. Fans of Twin Peaks and other strange and macabre fair will enjoy the show.

We thought it was about circus life during the dust bowl... it is, but we were pleasantly surprised to find it was more "science" fiction/drama. It's funny in parts and suspenseful as well, more so in the second season. We really enjoyed it and would watch it again. There is nudity and cursing, so be aware of that and it delves into religion and magic... I would recommend it.

this series is one of the best out there. the sets are just fantastic, the actors actually can act, and it is insane. if you are looking for sex and the city, you have definitely got the wrong series though. This is a twisted series, and that is why the suits cancelled the show, because they don't get it. if you are looking at this series chances are you have seen it before, but let me tell you, you notice some strange stuff after seeing the series before. hope this helps
