Wonderful movie, loved the dancing and the singing
Review created: 03/11/09

I bought this movie a couple weeks ago and i absolutely love it. My friend had recommended this movie because she knew I love Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. She was completely correct. The dancing was amazing and i love the songs in this movie. The plot is one of your typical Fred Astaire love stories but added a new twist to his character.

Incredibly dumb, lightweight story about Fred as a psychiatrist (convincingly enough), and Ginger as air-headed, misguided patient about to marry incredibly dumb, completely unconvincing Ralph Bellamy. The dances, as usual, are from another dimension entirely--except for "The Yam", which is as corny, and as bad, as its title. Fred can do no wrong, but this movie's scriptwriter should just have been taken out and shot. This is fluff--completely unleavened by genuine humor. Except, of course, for the dancing.

I'm a huge Fred and Ginger fan. I have many of their movies and even though Carefree was not on the top of the list when it came out, it's my absolutely favorite of all their films. Ms. Rodgers is at her best with a perfect mix of drama and silliness. Carefree lives up to it's name and is a lot of fun.

  Wacky Astaire-Rogers Musical
Review created: 10/27/06
by:

Carefree (1938) was the eighth of ten musicals pairing the inimitable Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, but this very good film is rather different from the typical Astaire-Rogers fare. This is a musical-screwball comedy, combining Fred and Ginger's great dancing with zany shenanigans. Also rare is the fact that Astaire is not playing a professional dancer or entertainer--he's a doctor, a psychiatrist who treats Ginger, a radio singer and the fiancee of Fred's friend (Ralph Bellamy).

Dr. Astaire is supposed to be helping Rogers and Bellamy straighten out the kinks in their relationship so they can be happily married, but Fred's treatment backfires when Ginger falls in love with him, not Bellamy. He uses hypnosis to make her love Bellamy and despise him but regrets this when he realizes he loves Ginger.

There are several hilarious scenes, including a drugged and hypnotized Ginger causing mayhem and chasing Fred around a country club with a loaded shotgun. This film has fewer songs than most Astaire-Rogers musicals, but the dancing is, as usual, first-rate. Ginger's rendition of Irving Berlin's "The Yam" is also fun.

Fans of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers will enjoy Carefree very much. If you haven't seen any Astaire-Rogers pictures before, you might want to start with Top Hat or Gay Divorcee, as this film is different from the others.
