Captain Horatio Hornblower

I bought this movie because I love and own all of the BBC's mini series of Horatio Hornblower starring Ioan Grufford. After watching Master and Commander with Russell Crowe, I was very interested in this genre of movies. After doing some research, I discovered the Horatio Hornblower series that was actually written about 20 years before the Master & Commander series.
I fell in love with the story, the actors and the time period. I throughly enjoyed watching and re-watching those, and then I heard about this older version. I also love vintage movies, so I thought, "why not?"
I will admit, that the movie is good, but a bit cliche for me. I enjoyed a bit of a different story line and seeing some of my favorite characters portrayed again on screen. However, I confess that it took me about 3 seperate sittings to finally watch the entire movie. I don't believe it was that long, but it definitely dragged on in places for me.
While the colors and style of the movie is so vintage perfect, the battle scenes are lacking in the modern detail. If you are a Horatio Hornblower fan you must own this, but it will likely not replace the BBC series as your favorite.
You've got to admit that Gregory Peck is certainly handsome, no?
