I had this film for years as a ragged vhs, and awaited itsw issue as a DVD. I think it is one of the best swashbucklers, well produced, photographed, and acted. The quality of the DVD did not disappoint. Thanks to all who had a part in its reissue.

Story line is by C.S. Forester, with many twists and turns. Lots of subtle humor as story progresses. Excellent sea shots and ship battles. DVD has many extra features of interest.

Gregory Peck in one of his best roles. Lots of action and a happy ending, just like what a classic movie should be.

  Captain Horatio Hornblower
Review created: 03/04/09

I bought this movie because I love and own all of the BBC's mini series of Horatio Hornblower starring Ioan Grufford. After watching Master and Commander with Russell Crowe, I was very interested in this genre of movies. After doing some research, I discovered the Horatio Hornblower series that was actually written about 20 years before the Master & Commander series.

I fell in love with the story, the actors and the time period. I throughly enjoyed watching and re-watching those, and then I heard about this older version. I also love vintage movies, so I thought, "why not?"

I will admit, that the movie is good, but a bit cliche for me. I enjoyed a bit of a different story line and seeing some of my favorite characters portrayed again on screen. However, I confess that it took me about 3 seperate sittings to finally watch the entire movie. I don't believe it was that long, but it definitely dragged on in places for me.

While the colors and style of the movie is so vintage perfect, the battle scenes are lacking in the modern detail. If you are a Horatio Hornblower fan you must own this, but it will likely not replace the BBC series as your favorite.

You've got to admit that Gregory Peck is certainly handsome, no?

  Swashbuckling at it's finest

C.S. Foreseter's classic saga of a British Frigate Captain and his adventures against Napolean Bonaparte in defense of his beloved England. This has always been one of my favorites and a staple of TV Movie shows. The book that inspired the movie was the basic premise of Star Trek when it was sold to NBC Excecutives.Gregory Peck captures the feelings of the character perfectly and Virginia Mayo is well cast as his love interest.By the end of the movie, you'll be wishing it would not end.Unfortunately, this was the only movie based on the book;until A&E's Hornblower Mini series. The cast includes many stars of the 1950's including Peter Ustineoff.

  TOP 5 High Seas Film
Review created: 09/12/08

Gregory Peck is the man! When I was a kid my father and I watched quite a few movies and now that i'm his age I find myself collecting all the movies he and I watched. I dont think anyone could have pulled off Cpt Hornblower but Peck, as well he shined in "The Guns of Navarone" and "Moby Dick" as well so many other movies.
This movie take you back to a time of sea battles on the high seas, the acting is believable and you get swept up into the movie very easy. I have a hard time finding any real problems with this film other then more movies should have been made from the books this movie was made from.
This is a feel good move with ups and downs and the great feeling of when people get their "come upins".
I would like to see a remake of this film and or a continue of the book series on film.
This IS a top 5 high seas war film that should be added to anyones war DVD collection!
