Movie Description
Bennett Miller's CAPOTE is a finely crafted biopic that recounts a historic chapter in American history and, in the process, captures the unraveling of a truly gifted mind. Starring an extraordinary Philip Seymour Hoffman as the legendary Truman Capote, the film concentrates on the seven-year period during which Capote wrote his groundbreaking nonfiction novel, IN COLD BLOOD. One morning in 1959, Capote learned of a horrific family killing in Holcomb, Kansas. With the intention of writing an article for the New Yorker, he traveled to the Midwest with his good friend Nell Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), who was about to publish her own masterwork, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Somehow, the soft-spoken, eccentric writer managed to earn the trust of local authorities--most notably, reserved K.B.I. agent Alvin Dewey (Chris Cooper). But when the two killers were caught and returned to Kansas to await trial, Capote began to form an intense emotional bond with one of them, Perry Smith (Clifton Collins, Jr.). The pressure of this connection threatened to push an already fragile Capote into the darkest recesses of himself. His only hope was to finish the book that he was convinced would shock the nation and change the course of writing forever.

Hoffman's tender portrayal of the writer is a remarkable achievement. He slips into the skin of Capote flawlessly, allowing viewers to experience Capote's inner turmoil for themselves. Keener and Cooper once again deliver compassionate performances. But it is Miller's overall vision, based on a script by Dan Futterman and beautifully realized by his technical collaborators (especially director of photography Adam Kimmel and production designer Jess Gonchor), that makes CAPOTE an Oscar-worthy production.

One Writer's Power Over One Mass Murderer
    Review created: 04/23/07

In 1959 Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) was a columnist for the New Yorker magazine. One day he read a newspaper article about a mass murder in small town Kansas. The multiple murder intrigued Capote. So he asked his editor at the New Yorker magazine, then William Shawn (Bob Balaban), to allow him to write a longer article about the evolving mass murder case.

Truman Capote felt the true story should be made into one as provocative as fiction. The Kansas mass murder was so inexplicably brutal. It occurred in a town of people where it was a strain to even imagine a mass murder could happen there. After his editor agreed, Capote ventured to the town taking with him a close friend Harper Lee (Catherine Keener)--novelist of "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Capote's (gay) difference was accentuated in Kansas. However, with finesse and intellect he earned the trust of Alvin Dewey (Chris Cooper), the Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent who was working the murder case of the Clutter family. In short, Capote's New Yorker magazine article turned out to be a full-length book. It's this unforgettable 1960's book's invention and the influence researching and writing it had on Truman Capote that inspires this dramatic true story film.

Interestingly, Capote also familiarized himself with the murderers of the Clutter family: Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino) and Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.). Surprisingly, Capote found out he was more like Smith than he ever expected to learn or admit. Capote and Smith became "friends," never realizing Smith would still be alive (rather than executed) before the nonfiction text was published. Therefore, the author was forced to contend with the morality of his text. Capote's research and writing would play a role in Smith's execution and the literary creation of how Smith would be marked in readers' memories. Ths bolder issue is the power of one writer's life over one murderer's death, plus many readers' impressions of the murderer.

Capote co-stars Bruce Greenwood (Capote's long term gay lover Jack Dunphy) and Amy Ryan (Mary Dewey, investigator Alvin Dewey's wife, one of Capote's confidantes). It's one of the better stories about a writer I've seen.

I rate this movie as one of the best I've seen (and I've seen all the classics!).

The plot of the movie was interesting, thought provoking, and satisfying. It is a great drama!

The most fulfilling aspect of the movie is the casting. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays an amazing Capote!! I had never seen the real Truman Capote, so after watching the movie I researched a bit and WOW! was I floored at Hoffman's performance! Bravo! An Oscar well rewarded in Capote!

This movie is not for children. There are some violent scenes and the overall plot to mature and disturbing for them.

If you are considering buying this movie, also consider Truman Capote's novel, In Cold Blood.
