So you have a shiny new SLR, (or at least, a new-to-you SLR) and you need a lens. I've recommended this lens to many people due to its solid performance across a wide range and the image stabilization. Plus, it's quite affordable. I swap lenses all the time and it really is quite a hassle. This lens is great for backyard picnics, where you'll be both close and far from your subjects in a medium-size environment. I brought this to the zoo once and it just didn't have the reach to fill an animal in the frame, even with the 1.6x crop factor. However, I noticed it was perfect for photographing the parents and kids around me! As it got darker, the IS worked quite well.
If you're going to get just ONE lens, I highly recommend this lens if you have a Canon 10D or earlier. If you have a Rebel, Rebel XT, or 20D and you want to compensate for the 1.6x crop, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS is the alternative. I would have gone for this option, but I was seeking a lens for my Canon 10D, which cannot use EF-S lenses.
I picked this lens up with my initial camera purchase as it fit my favorite shooting range. It has quickly become one of my favorite walk around lenses and coupled with IS you can’t go wrong. I find this to be the ideal lens for my outdoors, family events and vacations. It was perfectly suited for a recent trip to Disney and almost exclusively used. I was perfect for capturing all the daily events and with IS still being able to hand hold the camera and capture night time shows, fireworks, and indoor 'Character Meals' with almost all the pictures coming out sharp and clear (wish I could attach samples to show just how sharp).
Image quality produced of both color and sharpness are really very good with this particular lens. It is very close to the infamous L-Series glass falling only slightly shorter on color saturation/tonal depth, but still creating very accurate renditions. I have found sharpness only starts to have a noticeable difference at about 300% magnification when I compared similar shots taken with an L at the same focal distance. And I know, build quality doesn't equal L, but it is much better than most other non-L lenses. With USM, it is also very quiet with autofocus being fairly quick.
I have been very happy with this lens any time I have used it and for the price I would recommend it to anyone looking at it. I had seen a suggestion to the 17-85mm IS for true non-crop range. Personally I found the 17-85 lens to have too much barrel distortion for me to live with which is why I ruled it out quickly.
If I had any complaints one would be that there is an extremely minute amount of stiffness in the zoom ring, so that it almost feels as though it might stick …but it doesn’t. The other would be that I wished it started at 24mm end or slightly lower, but then that would make it compete too much with Canon’s 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM at more than half the price.
I gave this an excellent rating, because it would take a lens more than twice the price to give you better. And for non-pro situations many people don't need that level of build quality and overly clear sharpness (you won't see it in a 4X6 or 5X7 print).
I love this lens...great depth of field. It's a little on the heavy side but that just means good craftsmanship to me! It does fit on my 20d but was a little hard to get on for some reason.
It's crystal clear I printed a 20x30 studio shot and it's beautiful. My only complaint would be that when it's in auto focus it doesn't always appear to be sharp through the lens. It always come out sharp though so I guess that's all that really matters.
I researched for the "best walkaround lens". For my use it has been great. On an XTi, it looks impressive due to the size of the big lens and small camera body. Camera is now named "the big boy". Pictures are also very impressive, love the prints. Very detailed. Used it for over 600 shots on business trip to Mexico. Sum = great lens, highly recommend
I bought this lens as a replacement for the stock lens that comes with the rebel xti. This has been the best money spent in a long time. It gives a good amount of zoom without losing the ability to shoot decent macro and the Image Stabilization works wonders in low light situations. I don't know how I went without the IS in the past now, but from here on out every telephoto lens I buy will have it. Also, the focus motor is a huge upgrade from my last lens. It is whisper quiet (great for shooting events because it is so quiet!) and very quick. Shutter speed has increased a good amount now as well.
Again, I have nothing but praise for this incredibly well built and functioning lens.
This Lens works very fast and has captured great shots for me, the Auto Focus system works quick and smooth and IS is noticably there when in use, helping alot. It has become my standard lens replacing my 55mm and 300mm lens, a perfect compromise.
I bought standard zoom lens with an Image Stabilizer and high zoom ratio. With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using flash or a tripod. Very handy for places where flash is prohibited.
The larger lense (72mm) gathers light better than the one that came with my EOS 10D (58mm). The lense focuses very fast and the stabilization is fantastic! The pictures are crisp and clear. This is a great lense!!!
i had to choose between this and the sigma 18-200mm OS DC but i went with canon. few things i've noticed. sigma covered more range. canon did not. sigma is loud!! canon is not. canon is fast sigma is slow. canon is better to handle its lot smoother. sigma is cranky. so
sigma + more range + stabilizer - slow canon - less range + stabilizer + fast ultra sonic motor
they are almost the same. but quality vs. quantity. you cant always have what you want. i picked canon.
For the price, it does very well as a macro and wide angle lens. The IS works good, it's pretty quiet and fairly easy to use. If I go pro though, I would definitely get a different lens for more zoom.
I found another lens later for 75 bucks less, but who knows, could be a new cheesy model from China while this is a real Canon lens. Nice lens for a wide variety of tasks including close-ups. Nice smooth zoom. Battery eater on IS, so keep it off when you don't need it and pack extras.
Excellent lens. Lens is light weight and delivers crisp & sharp images. This is definitely one to use everyday. It will replace one or two of the ones that I currently use.
This is advertised as a new item never used. I wanted a new lense for my camera but could not afford retail for this lense. When the lense arrived it appeared to be a new lense with the warranty card that matched the lense. When I attached it to my camera it worked beautifully. I could not be happier with this purchase. This is why I buy on e-bay. I had good communication with the seller and shipping time was very fast. Overall excellent transaction.
I bought this lens 1 month ago and have been using it on my 10D almost constantly. It is lightweight and has proven to be a very good all around lens for my photographic needs. Although not as good optically as my "L" lenses, it is much easier to carry and does not require use of a tripod for sharp photos.
This is a great all purpose lens, in fact it's the only one I use now. It takes super clear pics, close-ups or landscapes. It's very easy to adjust and frame. The IS feature is wonderful! I wouldn't want a zoom lens without it. Two things I don't like: 1- the front end of the lens feels loose, wobbles back and forth. It doesn't seem to affect the picture quality, but just doesn't feel solid enough. I plan to contact Canon to see if this can be fixed. 2- The weight. It makes the camera feel heavy and out of balance. It's not a big deal for me, but my wife doesn't care to lug it around too long.
Beautifully designed for serious ametures to professionals. Very smooth and accurate focusing blended with image stebilisation. Balanced weight and grip. Winner's choice.
This lens was the perfect all around lens for our trip to Africa - Very pleased. You can use the lens for close ups and works well enouph to photograph action sports at a distance.
This is a great everyday, all-around lens to have offering wide angle to mid range zoom. I use this lens sometimes for my commercial shoots in hospitals and clinics. I also use this lens for outdoor shots when I want more of a panorama. I have a similar 28-105mm (also a great lens) but love the Image Stabilization on this one. When on a tripod - don't use the IS though as it will unnecessarily drain your battery. When I don't have a long lens on for a real telephoto need, this is the lens I mostly choose. It was a kit lens for the Canon 40D, but I bought it brand new for my 5D from a guy who didn't want it. He said he already had a 34-70, and didn't need it (???). Go figure. I have 6 lenses - this one gets used about 30% of the time. It has decent glass and produces very clean shart photos.
was weary at first about buying this lens. after using it i found myself loving this lens as i have found myself using as my goto lense for all my picture needs. the lens it self takes some incredible pics even in sports action mode. anyone whom purchases such a lens will not be disappointed.
For this price you won't find another lense with a range like this.I have absolutely no complaints with this lense however , however I am somewhat of a novice in the realm of photgraphy.
I bought this lens, like so many other buyers, because I wanted a decent walk-a-round lens with IS capabilities. I wasn't disappointed with my ebay purchase because I was able to pick up a new one of these at a little less than 200.00 off retail- so it was a deal for me. The build quality was a tad disappointing because the front of the lens does have a wobble which other reviews have noted- the IS also works as advertised. I have taken about a hundred or more photos under various lighting conditions of various subjects and am satisfied with the overall look and sharpness of the images. I like the detail and color that I have been getting- is it L quality? No, but I wouldn't want a L lens for my photo trips in the Rocky Mountains. The key about this lens for me is that it is worth every penny that I paid for it; however, if I had bought it for the retail price at our local camera shop or at Best Buy, I would have questioned the value for the price (B&H has it for a price that I could live with). It does exactly what I expected for the money that I spent for it- could one ask for any more?
This is a lot of lens for the money. This is my primary lens on the Canon 10D. I use it as a point and shoot lens and it covers a variety of conditions. I have been very happy with this lens. Fast focus, quiet, and light weight. It will be my mainstay for a while, I'm sure. Very happy with its performance. For the price, this lens will give you excellent images. The IS is great for low light situations when using it hand held, and it focuses fast and quietly to give you sharp images. Overall an excellent lens for the price!
This is a lot of lens for the money. Especially considering you can buy one for under $400.00 on ebay. This is my primary lens on the Canon 40D. I use it as a point and shoot lens and it covers a variety of conditions. I use it almost daily to shoot pictures in and around the house. It is also used to shoot pics for most of my items on e-bay. The EF 24-70 2.8 IS is a better lens, but it is also 3 times the money..
