EF compatible zoom lens for Canon EOS Rebel XT camera

I bought my EF 75-300mm Zoom lens just before I went on a trip to Alaska. I was close to my departure date when I bought the lens on eBay and very happy the lens arrived a few days before I left for the trip. Once in Alaska I had immediate opportunity to put the lens to work. I took over 500 pictures in one week, about half of them with the telephoto lens. I was surprise at how well the lens handled at 300mm. I caught eagles in flight and other distant images with good focus and resolution. The combination of the Canon Rebel XT and the telephoto produced clear close-up pictures of whales, sea lions, seals and other wildlife. The zoom mechanism worked flawlessly as did the EF autofocus in conjunction with the camera. When needed the manual focus is very easy to operate. The trip offered many quick reaction photo opportunities and the lens in conjunction with the camera did not fail me. And the lens’ compact size makes it easy to include in my 5X7X9 camera bag with my Canon 18-55mm EF lens and my camera.

The beauty of the Canon EF Lens system is that the lenses are truly compatible across the Canon EOS line. I have a Canon Rebel film camera. All the features of the EF 75-300mm work perfectly on that camera as well.

I considered other 75-300 zoom lenses that were reportedly compatible with Canon EOS cameras, but after the results I experienced during my week in Alaska, I am convinced that I could not have done better than the Canon EF 75-300mm Zoom Lens.

  Good lens with some shortcomings

Pros:
Telephoto range
4x zoom ratio
Lightweight
Cost

Cons:
Very slow focus
Hard bokeh (depth of field blur)
Rotating front element
Minimum focus distance

This is the least expensive telephoto zoom that Canon makes. For an entry-level telephoto lens it’s not bad, but you may want to consider the other lenses that Canon offers in this focal length range: (street price for new lenses)
EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III - $150.00
EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM - $180.00
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - $ 550.00
EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM - $ 1,100.00
The main problem with this lens is the very slow focus system. If you’re used to a DC focus motor on a smaller lens, you will still notice how slow this lens focuses comparatively. If you’re used to an Ultrasonic Motor, this lens is probably not for you. This somewhat limits this lens’s ability to be used in action situations, but for wildlife you probably won’t mind. If you have the aperture stopped down, the background blur (bokeh) is unappealing. The long focal length inherently has a lot of shake, so this lens needs good lighting to keep shutter speeds up, Image Stabilization would of course help. The good news is that the USM version (with the same optics) is only $30 more, well worth it in my mind. If you are serous about using this for sports or low light conditions , you should really consider the 70-300mm IS USM. If you have some serious cash to invest, the Diffractive Optics version is a pro-grade lens.

Bottom line: Yes, it’s the most affordable, but a novice shooter will outgrow its features quickly. There is very little reason not to get the USM version instead, and the only downside to the IS version is cost.

  Canon Zoom Lens (excellenct choice)

I love this lens. It is so clear and gives crisp pictures. It is very lightweight compared to other lenses of that size. I enjoy taking pictures and this lens allows me to take pictures of things pretty far away. For example, I recently took a picture of the full moon and it looked as if it were right in front of me. I would reccommend this lens to any photographer.

A must have for a Canon SLR camera!!! Takes awesome pictures!! with this lens I shoot like a professional photographer. Lens is very easy to use (auto or manual focus). Zoom is wonderful!!! Crystal clear pictures at 100 yards!!

lens goes on and off in about 5 seconds.

It's lightweight for such a big zoom.

I am completely satisfied, and would recommend A+++++

Solid Telephoto lens w/ below average Autofocus motor.

The EF 75-300mm telephoto lens by Canon has great optical lens / quality - even the mount is metal. However, the AF (autofocus) motor on this non-USM/IS badboy makes it horrendous/not usable in AF mode. I use it MF mode and love the quality, DOP (depth of field) and even its construction. For the low price, why not?

  Decent lens for the price
Review created: 10/30/09(updated 10/30/09)

I'm not a pro, but a very serious amateur photographer. Sure, I'd love to be able to own one of the L Series lenses, but I can't afford to spend that kind of money these days. I got this lens used (but in great condition) for $99. Yes, at longer focal lengths, it's only good for shooting in conditions where lighting is good. For darker situations, I just use my tripod. I rarely shoot moving subjects, so the lack of a larger aperture isn't an issue for me.

If you're into sports or other action photography, then this is definitely NOT the lens for you, otherwise, it's a decent lens for the low price.

I bought a Cannon Telephoto EF 75-300mm from Anthony Young and he shipped the product in a timely manner. I would say the product arrived to my home address way before I expected it. And the product is in a great condition as he has described. Thank you Anthony.

How every sale should go.Good desc.pack well.ship quick
Review created: 08/30/09

This lens is in like new condition and works perfectly. It is actually in better condition than I expected. I appreciate the sellers honesty in his description and the fact that it was very well packed. He also shipped it right away as I had it in my hand 72 hrs. after the bidding ended. I have since learned that these lenses fall into three manufacturing series groups and this one is of the newest (third) series, as evidenced by the Roman numeral III on the edge of the lens.
I bought it because it was the exact lens I was looking for and from the description and the picture, I knew that it was in good condition. There were and still are several listed and I felt that this one was going to sell for a fair price.

The canon name is the first thing that drew me to this lens. I was impressed with the pricing on ebay. I was able to buy the lens for 1/3 the retail price. I am new to photography, and I find the lens very user friendly. I would recommend ebay and canon to anyone who wants to listen about my new lens.

Purchase of EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III auto focus lens
Review created: 05/10/09
by:

I purchased this lens because, I had looked around at new ones and found them to be quite costly. I found this one here on ebay and from the photos, it looked to be in great shape. I asked a question of the seller and his response was quick and truthful. Upon recieving the lens, I found it to be Identicle to the one that I had just priced for close to two hundred dollars. I won the lens for considerably less and it was in great shape. I appreciate the seller for allowing someone to get a good deal on it!.

Once I won the lens, the seller contacted me immediately. She stated she was out of town but gave me a time frame as to when to expect the lens. Her husband actually sent it early and she wrote to apologize for this. She was very easy to work with and I'm VERY happy with the lens!

Nice lens, for the entry dollar level. Cannon quality, smooth action, a little shake, but I think It is just the distance. My only other lens was the factory kit lens, so this lens makes a big differance. For the dollars I thought it was a great deal!!....
