If you are a serious photographer who still appreciates the wonder of film and the feel of a fine solid camera, consider the Canon T90. It was the last manual camera made by Canon, and I consider it their best ever.

Nicknamed "The Tank" by photojounalists who use a camera hard, this camera has strength, style and grace. It's design shape was the precursor of all the Canon autofocus cameras and fits the hands beter than ANYcamera this reviewer has used; the balance is superb.

It takes all Canon FD manual lenses. It has a built in motor drive with speeds up to 4.5 frames/sec, and uses only 4 AA batteries. It possesses an automatic film transport system, automatic film speed setting, and was the first camera ever to have 3 different light metering modes: average, partial metering and spot metering. It has a magnetic shutter and a top mounted LCD Panel which can even be illuminated. And it has all the modern shooting modes (Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, full Program, Manual, Stopped-Down AE).

The camera uses a glass prism for a bright focus even in dim light. The viewfinder displays shutter speed and aperture in easy to read red colors and also has, on the right side, vertically displayed, a frame counter that, when used in the spot metering mode, becomes an exposure level meter. This is very handy for those who shoot 'chromes for gauging the exposure variance in a scene. It does NOT have a built in flash.

Simple, easy to use, reliable, comfortable. You can't ask for more than this in a camera. Plus you take film- which still can record a wider range of detail and color than the most expensive digital cameras. These can be purchased for from $200-400 here on eBay. I love mine-I'd sell my wife before this camera!

Canon T90 "The Tank" 35mm SLR

This camera deserves at least a 6 star rating.

I am a photographer who is experienced in Canon SLRs that use the FD lens series. My first camera was the Canon AE-1 Program. I upgraded to the A-1 and just a few months ago invested in a Canon T90.

This camera is very good for the advanced amateur or professional. In fact its even good for a beginner!

I first got this camera and immediately I was awestruck. Its design, layout, handling, and performance was unbelievable. The Canon T90 was the last professional SLR that Canon made that used the FD lens series. This camera is considered to be the best 35mm SLR Canon has ever produced.

One of the most attractive features on this camera was its metering capabilities. Normally, your typical camera will take an average light metering across the entire frame. Without skill and careful consideration, many of your shots will turn out poor being underexposed or overexposed. With the T90's metering system, you can select between normal metering, center metering, and spot metering. Center metering will meter what is near the center of your viewfinder. Spot metering will meter the exact center of your viewfinder. In fact, you can spot meter various spots in your frame and the Canon T90 will average out these meterings to insure that your subjects in the frame will be properly exposed!

I very much like the built-in Program functions such as "Tele" and "Wide". Its a very fast and easy way to take a shot with a small or large aperture without having to actually set it yourself.

Many features from past successful models have been carried over onto the T90 including the viewfinder shutter, multi exposure, and exposure compensation.

With its built in motor drive, the Canon T90 can take pictures up to a blazing fast 4.5 frames/sec!! I have used this feature many times on my T90 and it is as smooth as butter.

Many people complain about the dreaded and most infamous EEEE error. Yes this will happen on this camera if you do not use it. The best way to ensure a prolonged life of your Canon T90 IS TO USE IT! Even if you don't shoot film, just turn it on and fire off a couple dozen frames. Do this about once every month or so.

I could go on and on about this camera but I wont bore you for much longer. This camera is definitely a head-turner. Everyone see this camera. When you walk into a room with it slung around your shoulder you will get many comments about it. I am a film person. I love the way film breathes and captures an image. Digital just isn't my forte.

My T90 is over 15 years old and there is still a lot of life in it. It operates superbly to this day. I will never get rid of this camera from my collection and when I die, it will most likely be clenched in my hands.

  Canon T90 Film Camera

I won't go into the technical side of the camera, as that information is available on the internet...

I own a Canon 20D digital camera and it's a technological wonder! But if you are looking for a Canon manual focus film camera that's also a tech wonder - the T90 is for you. Few cameras of any era (digital or film) feel as good in your hand! It advances to the next frame at an incredible 4.5 frames per second (my 20D does 5). While all of us love autofocus, I find that using manual focus lenses on a fully automated camera helps me work more on the composition of the picture.

A few things to watch for: first, if the T90 you're looking at hasn't been used for a long time, the shutter mechanism may be locked up and you get the "dreaded EEE" message and the camera will not work (so "I found dad's camera in the closet, it hasn't been used in years" means you want to check out this EEE message with the seller. If they can't verify it has this message, assume it does). I had one repaired and now it works perfectly. Honest Ebay sellers will tell you about this - but if they don't state it clearly - ASK! Secondly, you can buy one that's fairly rough cosmetically(though functional) for $100-125. I suggest you buy a cheap one, try it out, see what a great camera this is and then sell it and buy a really nice one THEN build your Canon FD lens arsenal! The nice ones go for $165-200. I've had four T90's and they are worth the money just for the fun factor. Finally, buy from a "camera Ebayer"! When someone says "this is my personal camera" or "I bought it new" or "I'm going to digital and need to sell my T90" - you are likely to get a great camera. If you buy from a non-camera person who basically says "it looks good to me", well - I can provide the name of my repair service!

Also - it's been my experience that the T90 works best with the newer FD lenses, meaning the lens doesn't have the silver ring where it attaches to the camera body. The newer style FD's are smaller, lighter and balance well on the T90. The older style lenses work great, but are larger and heavier. I bought a older style 50mm f1.2 (super fast!) and it worked super, but sold it on Ebay because it was over twice as heavy as the newer style 50mm 1.4 - I know that's not apples and apples, but you get the idea. That being said - you can find some really great glass on Ebay for just a little money.

Hope this is helpful!

Best and the Basis for the Digital Age
Review created: 08/03/07

The T-90 Camera by Canon is the Basis for the EOS cameras that followed and the Digital Cameras after those. It was the first fully electronic camera Canon made with the feel and reliability of their all Metal Professional Camera the
F-1. I do not love any camera,as a professional photographer my cameras need to work consistantly and even if a "Green Horn" Aisstant drops one.

I decided to comeout of retirement and start shooting again and I am not totally sold on using chips instead of film. So I replaced my old equipment I had with what worked best in the past. Thank goodness for Ebay and the availability through ebay of some of the best camera equipment that was ever made.

  Best manual

Nearly two decades after my purchase, the T90 is still working strong - and there are so many features that it would take a long time to master the camera. Fundamentally, however, it's relatively easy to use, and you can begin taking strong images immediately. And as so many of its fans will attest, it's incredibly durable and reliable - a camera you'll feel comfortable taking to your more demanding shoots.

Not having some kind of automatic metering in some cases at least does reduce its appeal for non-professional users. Canon has stopped providing replacement parts for the T90, with obvious consequences. Most important from a day-to-day basis, the T90 does not allow the user to re-use partially exposed rolls of film; if you juggle multiple rolls of film, this may prove annoying.

On the other hand, Canon T90 is profoundly underpriced. It's extraordinary that you can pick up a world-class camera so reasonably. It can be used as simply as you require, or provide a laundry list of creative options.

Superb Camera and so are the FD lenses
Review created: 02/22/08

I have had my T90 for about 3 years now. It was advertised on Ebay as having problems with the external display so the price never rose above a certain level and it became mine. Along with the camera I received 3 FD lenses, all in "like new" condition. The problems with the display were easily overcome, and all displays in the viewfinder functioned perfectly. The multi-input metering on this camera is a feature that most newer DSLRs still do not have (but surprisingly my Olympus 8080 does have it). Lens quality is Leica-like and in stacks of prints I have no problem picking out the MANUAL focus images coming from this camera!! I have had the dreaded EEEE fault once. I removed the batteries, opened the right hand door and reset the camera by depressing the multi-or single exposure button with a pen. Probably one of the best manual focus cameras on the market, and still very popular (Wide angle lens prices for this unit often exceed the camera price by 200% or more)

220174080031 Canonet shipped in a bag & not a box

Camera was stated as a Canon T90 but the photos told me better. I buy the older Canonets to rebuild, however after receiving it shipped in a bag it was a worthless hunk of metal. The lens what broken away from the body and the outer lens was cracked. The seller refuse to accept any fault in his shipping proceedures he had performed. The item number was posted so you can see who the seller was. For a 99 cent bid and wanting to be cheap on his shipping he used a bag. Well it still cost him more to ship than going by Priority Mail instead. This would of cost him $4.80 to ship Priority Mail and he was stuck paying almost twice as much using Parcel Post and buying a Parcel Post shipping bag. I told him what to do but he refused. That earned him negative feedback. What I get I don't care for I was not the seller. Feedback has to be read to know what meaning it has. If a receipiant places negative feedback, that tells you the seller has a problem in wording their item. I do get negative feedback sometimes. Mostly for the buyer is from a foriegn land or just can't operate a simple camera with instructions given. Pudding heads are still out there so what out for them

Review created: 08/17/09(updated 08/17/09)

Just tested two rolls of films on the CAnon T90 camera... it was said to be the last of FD mount camera and most of the technology were transfer to the EOS series... so, this camera basically feels like a EOS camera with manual focus lens and that all... easy to handle and I mostly shoot with P mode unless i want some control over it then I will shoot in either Av or Tv mode. this will definite be a keeper film camera for me...

  A Dream Camera
Review created: 05/13/09

The T90 is perhaps the world's all time best film camera. The Nikon F4s is up there too but the T90 is lighter and has multi-spot metering built in to use the zone system. And it feels right in your hands.

It is quite a bargain these days. For less than the cost of a cheap entry level DSLR, you can get a T90 and several prime Canon FD lenses, which are among the finest lenses ever produced. Hard to beat that combination.
