Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH 12.1 Megapixel

We buy a new Canon Elph about every 2 years (this is our fourth) with the most recent model being the SD700. We bought this one, the SD780, a few weeks ago and are very impressed. In looking for a new camera here was our criteria:

1. Be simple to use. I've owned too many devices that are just too much work to use and I want to enjoy using my camera.
2. Take great indoor pictures. At least half the time we use our camera is at parties so no washed out (too much flash) pictures for us.
3. Take HD Video. We hate carrying a separate video camera and want this one to do both well.
4. Take pictures quickly. I hate waiting for cameras to turn on and focus--do it fast or forget about it.
5. Be as REALLY small. For me that means it must fit in my wife's purse or it's not going to go very many places.

The Canon SD780 in my opinion fits all the above better than any other camera on the market (as of May 2009). As an avid Canon camera owner I know that they make some of the most easy to use cameras on the market and this upgraded camera would come with some of the same familiar features of our loved SD700--plus HD Video all in a package the size of 10 stacked credit cards (fits easily inside my wife's purse or my pocket).

It keeps the Image Stablization (same technology available for years in camcorders)--which is great considering its often hard to hold such a small camera steady. The technology allows us to take pictures at parties indoors often without using the flash letting the natural light into the picture.

A few unexpected bonuses of the SD780:
* Records HD videos 780p (30fps, H.264/Quicktime) and can output thru an HDMI port.
* Face Detection (DIGIC IV) which makes it focus on the right thing.
* Battery life lasts all weekend long (NB-4L)
* Special modes for taking pictures of Fireworks, the Beach, and Cloudy days.
* A beautiful fade effect between pictures while in slideshow mode.
* Fast power on, first picture, and quick scrolling thru slideshow pics.
* Comes in 4 great looking colors (red, black, gold, and silver)

Only drawback I've seen is that the video files are not compressed as much as say the Flip Mino HD so you'll need to have more storage (both on SD card and on your hard drive) however this also means less quality is lost.

You won't be disappointed by the SD780. For a deal look for the Japanese (IXY 100) or the European (IXUS 100) models.

I have had many cameras but this one is the best! Perfect shots everytime! Its so lightweight and easy to handle.

Picture quality was my main concern, the second was size. This camera is small to carry as a regular cell phone. I never leave the house without it and my rewards has been great shots in front of me and my camera when less expected. This is my digital camera #7 and the best one so far, 5 of my other ones were also Canon.

This is the perfect camera to have on your person at all times just in case something happens that you need a photo or if you see something you need to remember. The photo quality is superb. It is so nifty that it is only a little larger than a credit card. Way to go Canon!

If you are a fan of Canon cameras you will enjoy this one. It's very compact which is convenient. It can easily fit in your back pocket though I don't recommend that. It takes very sharp photos and crisp video. My only complaint is that it does not save video as an AVI file. I knew this before ordering but as a novice when it comes to file extensions I didn't think it was a big deal. Boy was I wrong. The video files are saved as MOV files and unfortunately that means it won't play in windows media player. It plays in Apple Quicktime. Well you may be thinking that's not a big deal but it is because the sound and video don't match up when played in Quicktime. I played around with my computer and downloaded some things and finally got the video to play in media player however it still won't work in windows movie maker. That's right, if you enjoy editing your video's in windows movie maker this is not the camera for you. Movie maker doesn't understand MOV files. I was told I could buy a file converter to convert the files from MOV to AVI. Honestly the main reason I purchased this camera is because it video's in HD but had I known it would be such a hassle I would have probably gone with another Canon model.

This camera is great. It's sleek and thin features make it easy to fit in your pocket to bring along with you anywhere! Its 12.1 megapixels and 3 x zoom does not disappoint as you capture everyday life in photos. The colour accent feature is fun to play with and creates great shots.

So far so good. I looked at best buy and other places but the cost of this camera at those places was way too much. I got my camera here because of the price and so far it has been a good buy. I hope it stays that way.

has great features and large range of picture modes. great image quality. I was rather surprised at how precise the video camera is in capturing detail. Amazing camera that gets the job done.

I bought this camera because, while still serviceable, my old 3 megapixel Olympus camera (which I primarily use to take pictures of items I sell here on Ebay) eats batteries like crazy and does not have very much memory. I read great things about this camera, and found it for a fantastic price here. I like the fun red color, and the fact that's tiny but seems sturdy. I'm not a great photographer, so it's automatic mode features compensate nicely for my lack of skills. :-)

I was disappointed that it did not come with a memory card included, so I couldn't just open the box and start playing. It did come with a battery AND battery charger, though, which is a wonderful improvement over my old camera. It also seems to not be so power-hungry despite all of the features and 12.1 megapixel resolution.

Overall, this is a very functional camera that fits right in your pocket, and is very easy to use for even the least camera-savvy folks out there. The fact that it also shoots HD video (though I have not personally used the video features yet) is also awesome. Highly recommended -- I would given an "Excellent" rating if it also had come with a memory card included.

This camera is awesome. It takes good pictures even when the light is not so good. I like the size of it. I have it in a small belt camera bag and it is less lumpy than my Iphone.

I had a 4 year old digital Nikon Coolpix before this camera. I had used it for all my photo needs, like family , some video and all my ebay photos. I had purchased a replacement Nikon last year expecting the same crystal clear close images and I was sorely disappointed. I did some research about this camera and checked it out at Target and Walmart before I actually commited to buying it. I used it this past holiday to the MiddleEast and it took some fantastic photos, I can't wait to use it next week in Australia!! I have a waterproof case for it which is not the Canon made one but one of those DicaPac things and it works good but it is a little big. OVERALL IT WAS A GREAT PURCHASE!!!

Me? I am no pro. I am just your average joe who appreciates taking pictures at events to remember them, but in no way am I some artsy camera person. That being said, I enjoy this camera very much. It is very very small, and very nice looking. It takes real nice pictures, and has the HD video. In fact, that is the main reason I bought it, for the video. Let me tell you, the video is just okay. It isnt as bad as normal digital camera videos, but I guess I was expecting something like a dedicated camcorder HD video. I guess thats kind of foolish though isnt it? But let me say that it is definitely pretty nice. The thing about it is that the frames per second arent that high (30) so its kind of choppy and its a bit "noisy". Anyhow, if you just want to be an average person like me, buy this camera, you probably wont regret it.

This is the perfect camera. Smaller than its predecessor, and more features to boot. Holds a larger SD card, has "blink mode" so everyones eyes are always open. Canon has always been dependable, as long as you treat it carefully. Don't drop it or get it wet. Put the strap around your hand when you shoot.
