My Canon Powershot of 5 years finally was broken. I loved my Canon and I bought it based on Consumer Reports. I checked Consumer Reports and found a best buy for the predecessor of the SD1200 and decided to take a chance on purchasing the SD1200 which did not have a review yet. I'm glad I did. A much improvement from my prior powershot. Small, light, and sleek. Wow! I didn't realize the advances. The prices for the battery and cards are reasonable with the new model (despite my having to start over with new cards). The things I love are the faster shooting, ability to zoom on movie, the nice big screen, and the great pictures. The pictures are much clearer with this new upgrade. Also, with the bigger screen, my mother with limited vision can now see the pictures. I'm glad I bought the SD1200 and I recommend it for the amateur photographer who wants an easy to use camera which does all the thinking for you.

Canon SD1200 - nice camera, good price

Much faster than older generation cameras. Less lag, less noise in hi-ISO, faster focusing, smarter (face recognition), more steady images with less blur. These small Elphs have been terrible with red eye (flash too close to lens), and have not tested this yet, but so far so it is not as constant as in older models. Camera is also smaller (thinner) and lighter than before, battery life seems improved (though need more time to determine this). Large LCD, better control layout, colored bodies are nice option. Hard to fault this system. Its not an SLR, but a great pocket cam that will blow any cell phone cam out of the water.

  Great camera...very easy to use

Pros:
I love the Canon Power Shot SD1200 IS! I received it in the mail 3 days ago and havent put it down since. I think it is perfect for travelling and everyday use. I am not a professional, I just love taking pictures of my daughter and the camera is perfect for throwing in the diaper bag. It is small and easy to use. Pictures are easy to upload onto the computer and the quality is great.

Cons: You have to buy a SD before you can take any pictures and it comes with a rechargable battery, which is fine, but you have to remove the battery to charge. There is a plug you can buy seperately so that you do not have to remove the battery, but again, just another extra charge.

  Very good point and shoot.

This camera is an amazing little point and shoot.

You are able to take a picture very fast, once you push the power button (2-3 seconds). My old Olympus took about 10 seconds.

It will take fast consecutive pictures (3-4 seconds). My old Olympus took about 12 seconds.

I know that my Olympus is about 5 years old, so they are probably not as bad as they used to be. But for me it is a great upgrade.

The SD1200 takes great video. It is a lot easier and portable versus grabbing my MiniDV camera.

I haven't grabbed my MiniDV Camera since a got my SD1200, but I still haven't transfered to a DVD to see the quality difference. I only use it for home movies so being portable is more important than video quality.

Nice photo, tricky closeup adjustment, a/v out fragile
Review created: 06/06/09

I needed a camera that could take good close-up photos with detail and thought this one would work for me. The focus adjustment for close ups is a bit tricky and the booklet didn't give me much information, as a matter in fact it was in spanish of which it is a good thing I can read. I also download photos and the a/v out is fragile that I think it's going to break off. I do love the camera though and the photos are so clear and the image stabilizer is great. It's so small and compact and easy to carry. I'm not sorry I bought it.

  Great Camera.

Just returned from two week vacation in Alaska and took a lot of pictures. Easy to use, handy to carry around because of small size and takes excellent pictures. Will take pictures in low light conditions without using flash which is great. Adjusts to a wide variety of conditions. I bought it because I wanted a small camera that was point and shoot. Has met all my expectations. Highly recommended.

The camera by itself works just fine. Auto mode always gets you too-bright face as you take portraits. Please not to use Auto-mode, then you will get the perfect pictures. I love this camera anyway. Battery life is superb.

Powershot SD1200, great bang for the buck compact

As far as a compact/pocket camera goes this camera takes quite nice pictures.
The key I've found is to make sure no matter what that you do the "half button" picture setup whenever the conditions such as lighting and subject have changed to ensure the best quality photo. For a compact it is full of features and offers alot of customization. But it is still a compact and does have it's limitations. You must be more aware as to holding the camera still then I've found with average size cameras otherwise you have a greater chance of blurred images then with average size cameras. Overall I would deffinately recomend this to anyone wanting a compact/pocket camera with a nice amount of customizable options and a really beautifull clear good sized LCD display.

  I like this camera

I like this camera that it adjusts almost all it's parameters by itself. I just hit the shoot button and the picture just looks professional. And the picture still looks good even if my hands shake. Also, The camera provides us an easier way to review pictures with its gravity sensor. The only thing I dislike is the little noise it makes when it is adjusting itself. Overall, I love this camera and definitely recommend it.

I had a Canon SD1000 and broke the LCD screen, that camera was an excellent camera but the SD1200 is far above my old one, crisp pictures and easy to use, would recommend to anyone, very compact!

  Very nice little camera...and a view-finder
Review created: 10/04/09

4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought my wife this camera to use while her (beloved) Canon S500 Elph was being repaired by Canon under a recall. She loves the pink color and the large LCD. However, she thinks it is just a little too small to hold and use comforatbly and I agree with her. The S500 is quite a bit fatter and much easier to use as a result. Another small problem is that the viewfinder window is smaller than it was on the S500. We always use the viewfinder; it saves the battery and you do not suffer from image wash out in bright sun as you do with any LCD. Canon seems the last hold out still giving you a rangefinder window with their compact cameras. The other companies seem to think that their customers like washed out images on sunny days in an LCD. Amazing that any true camera company would consider buiding a camera w/o a rangefinder.

Consumer Reports top rates this Canon SD1200 and they are right. It is the best of the bunch. Good image quality, small but manageable size, and that necessary rangefinder window.

Never owned a digital camera but this one is great
Review created: 09/08/09
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have never owned a digital camera before, but after reading reviews of many different brands and models, I chose this one and am not sorry. One important feature which was not mentioned in the reviews that I read, is that this camera has a view finder in addition to the LCD display. As an older person, sometimes it is difficult for me to use the LCD in bright sunlight. The view finder allows me to see what I am about to photograph very easily in the sun. This camera has a point and shoot (automatic) feature which is also good for a novice like myself. I am very happy with the photos produced and it is very easy to transfer them from the camera to the computer. I have taken shots of my grandchildren in motion and gotten good results. The Canon PowerShot SD1200 is small, light, easy to use and produces good quality photographs, both indoors and outside. I think I made a good choice.

  Great camera!

I bought this camera to replace one that was stolen. Although the battery wasn't the same as my old camera, it was ok because the camera came with a recharger. It is a very lightweight camera. The case is a little big for the camera but it's convenient because it is large enough to hold the camera plus a credit card and driver's license. The memory card is the perfect size. The cleaning kit is a plus as well. Delivery was fast and payment was convenient.

I am completely satisfied with the transaction and the product.

My girl had the SD1100 IS and we loved it! The 1100 and 1200 series turn out to be best bang for the buck, among all other brands and models. Now that I have had 4 cannons in the past with no particular problems and great quality, I will buy more of them.

So small, and yet so powerful!
Review created: 09/12/09

This is the smallest pocket size camera I have ever owned. It is very nice. I like the color (mine is blue) and it takes great pictures. You do need the battery charger since it uses a special battery. I even bought an extra battery so I don't get caught with mine needing charging right when a good shot comes up. 10 megapixels, woo-hoo! Also the most mp I have ever owned. But less expensive than some others I've owned! Good deal.

I purchased this for my Mom her old powershot died. She loves the size of the camera(about the size of a pack of cigarettes) even though this Powershot is smaller than her old one it has a bigger rear display. It does not use AA batteries like her old so the battery life is much better. I would recommend this little portable camera.

Jealous of the small, easy to use camera
Review created: 09/01/09

This was a gift for my wife who is a techie. She works in an IT office of techies at a major University, and they are jealous of this small, easy to use camera. The office has bigger, more expensive cameras, but often borrow hers to take shots for web pages and brochures. It takes great shots and is small enough to carry in a pocket or purse.
