As a semi-professional and published photographer, I have owned, and used daily, my PowerShot S30 for well over a year, and have had no problems with this rugged unit. Is built to handle limited abuse, and always deliver the shot you asked for. Numerous and easy-to-use functions make the S30 one of the best cameras around.

Perfect for the shutterbug on your shopping list.

  Canon PowerShot S30 3.2 - Great camera

I have had a Canon PowerShot S30 since 2002 when I paid way too much for it but the versatility of the camera is incredible. I have over 10K pictures in 4 years and the quality, depth and color is great for a 3.2 megapixel camera. I use my cameras, yes I have two of them, for work and pleasure. I am a roofer and use the pictures to explain to the customer why they are getting wet. The pictures are an awesome selling tool (87% of all sales calls used our company to complete the work). I have dropped my cameras in the Grand Canyon filling them with dust, from the roof top to the ground, from the attic to the tile floor to have them both repaired for under $25 and working again. I will never own another brand of digital camera. My wife has the SD300, smaller, lighter, and larger display that have been another great camera.

Easy to use features. Point and snap for those quick shots. Change to manual at the turn of a knob and adjust speed and apt. black and white and movie mode. Small enough to be quickly put in pocket. All metal, meaning very sturdy. i dropped mine several times. Great value for money. G

My favorite camera I've owned so far...

My husband & I bought this camera back in 2002 & have been extrodinarilly happy with it's capabilities, performance & results. Originally, we bought it because I wanted to be able to take detailed, close-up pictures of the beadwork that I do, & it has macro ability, & I was so impressed by the detail in which it captured my work, I decided I'd never want any other brand of camera ever again! It took amazing pictures of our wedding that look as if we had a professional photographer, when in fact, it was just one of our friends we handed our camera to get pictures for us. I've read other reviews that say there's problems with the shutter door getting loose or broken, but, we have not had any problems with ours at all, it's been the best & my favorite camera I've owned so far...and I've owned quite a few!

Great Camera when it came and and now

I got this camera new in 2002 and it has been a great camera the entire time I have owned it. I haven't and any of the problems I have read about with the lens cover/power switch or the battery door.

This take good pictures if you are printing out 5x7 or 4x6 pictures.

  Great camera but...

As other have said, this is a killer point and shoot camera, with many manual controls and capabilities. In my mind this was Canon's biggest bang for the buck of year 2002 even compared to higher end units like their G-serie. Being ALMOST all metal constructed and very sturdy, the only flaws were it's battery/memory card compartiment door AND the power switching system... The later has been responsible for many S-Serie dead-before-the-time cameras ! Mine has been no exception. The sliding door is the power switch of the unit, but it is one of the most often used moving parts of the S30(40/45/50/60 etc...) and, with time and usage, it tends to get loose until it get broken... Then, you have no means of powering up the S30.

Otherwise, some have to check their CCD rendition (not the LCD...) as it may display many dead pixels, resulting in white dots regular patterns. Very funny in outdoor night shots situation when you find new constellations up there !

All this said, the S30 has been a very pleasant travel and all-around companion with very good colors and details in pictures. I've even made a commercial DVD cover with it. Easy grip, fast response (for a 2002 unit and even by today's standards... ) very ergonomic, with all its commands available near your fingers. You can operate the S30 with one hand, in fact ! I liked it alot and, even though I have bought a bigger model ( in all senses),I am looking forward to replace it with a similar item for it's convenience and portability.

Highly recommended but ask about the CCD and the sliding door before you buy a used one. Valid for ANY S-Serie member! Actually, just take for sure that the power system (Sliding door mechanism) WILL break sooner or later. The price and your expected personal usage of the camera should dictate if it is for you. At bargain price, I would not hesitate.

Not much bad to say about this camera! It does everything you'd want in a point and shoot plus the ability to manual adjust settings. Nice feature in the movie clips too! Unless you're looking to do more than an 8 x 10 you don't need anything bigger! Great pictures and easy to use! Like the other reviewer said it is a sturdy camera! Not the real cheap plastic like so many other new ones out there.

Canon S30 - it is broken
Review created: 11/01/06

I loved this camera until it broke. It won't turn on when I open the lens cover. I tried everything I could think of - changed battery, changed the internal button battery, took it apart, put it back together, searched the internet for people with the same problem. I discovered that this camera has a very COMMON PROBLEM - it will break, whether it is 1 year old or 5 years old, because of the lens cover door which is also the on/off switch. Something inside breaks, you hear rattling, then eventually it won't turn on anymore. Since it costs a fortune to have a technician fix it, it's not worth fixing. So sad, it's such a nice camera.

Purchased a camera identical to this one new a few years ago. I dropped it and the viewing screen broke so looked for a used camera to use as parts. Bought this camera to use for parts but found it works just fine. Canon make a very quality product and would recommend them to anyone.

  A camera with no manual
Review created: 01/30/08

I'm delighted with the camera except I had to buy a CD (manual) rom another seller. So, in other words, the camera sits collecting dust waiting for me to learn how to use this fantastic camera.

I am an individual who has learned over the past few years to read the manual first; never assuming how to operate something technical or as simple as a camera. So now I am learning the fine techniques for the Canon Powershot.

I am confident I will get the knack on the full operation for the camera. That is my personal goal. I am also confident the seller is very reputable and has sold me a great piece of art.

I would purchase from this seller again. Not only was it safely delivered to me but there was also a packing slip inside the delivery box. The camera also arrived within a very short period of time. Now that is shipping and handling in a grand stage of delivery etiquette.

I will have to check now to see what else the seller has for me to bid or buy!!! Two thumbs up for this seller, A+++++

p.s. once I know how to fully use this camera I hope I can give more comment in the form of a review.

I like the Cannon PowerShot S30 3.2 megapixel as I have a S50 and prefer the larger sized camera. The only problem I had was downloading the software to use with Windows XP, not a problem with the Mac X aystem. Overall I was very safisified.

Big and clunky but reliable. Although several years old, this camera and it's features are still relevant to today's needs. I needed a spare camera that is reliable affordable and one that I am already familiar with. The features are standard and the 3.2 megapixel is fine for what I need it for.
