If you're searching for a high quality, compact, point-and-shoot camera then look no further than the Canon A650 IS. This camera is so versatile that it blurs the line between point-and-shoot and professional grade photo equipment. It even gives the option of utilizing wide angle/telephoto lenses and/or filters through the use of an optional lens adapter tube.

Capturing a scene at over 12 mega-pixels, this camera delivers crisp, clean images that you can blow up to portrait size without degradation of the picture. The myriad of functions built into the A650 allow you to explore your more creative side, while at the same time, it is so simple to use that it lives up to the phrase 'point and shoot.'

  Great camera for the value
Review created: 02/26/08

This camera is great for the kind of money it can be had for. I feel that the A650IS has significant enough improvements over Canon's related value-driven lower models to make it worth while. Worthwhile mentions are it's high quality LCD screen with swivel and swing-out features, 4-battery capacity, and 6x optical zoom. The A650IS has great manual features that allow professional style photography in a compact package. The 12.1MP rating is more than enough for intermediate to advanced use. The body feels somewhat cheap for what the camera is capable of, but the image quality and features far outweigh the physical characteristics of this camera.

I had a Canon A540 with 6 megpixels, dearly loved it. I gave that camera to my son whose camera had just broke. I decided to stick with the Canon and the A650IS has everything I wanted. The swivel viewing window makes the camera great for an older guy that doesn't want to stoop over to get those great photos of the grandchildren. Also great for holding above your head and shooting down on the subject. Fantastic photos with an even better qualit image than with the A540. The auction was professionally handled and the product shipped the day after I won. The camera, new in a box, is everthing the aution company claimed it to be. This is the second auction I have participated in and the second time I have been extremely pleased with the results. Go E.Bay - I did.

  Excellent Camera Would Highly Recommend

Not only is the picture quality exceptional the video quality is stellar! Clear, sharp images great for school events with the kids. Took this camera to the Monteray Bay Aquarium and the aquarium setting on the camera allowed me to take some incredible pics I would never have been able to figure out how to take before. So inspired I just got my wide angle and extender lenses (ebay finds as well). I'm still discovering features I didn't even know this camera had. Very impressed..

I personally love this camera... I have read reviews about some people not liking the fact that the batteries are in the same area as the memory card but seriously .....big deal. I find the picture quality to be fantastic. I love the fact that it takes 4 AA batteries rather than rechargable ones.... as I find they loose there charge quickly. I love the swivel monitor or screen. The camera in general is super easy to use and understand. I am overall pleased ... All I hope is that it lasts me longer than my old camera. The perfect point and shoot camera.

Love it all, but NEED to include the lens adapter!
Review created: 06/30/08

I love the camera and all of the included accessories. But when I got it home and opened it I was unable to use the extra lenses because there was an additional conversion lens adapter I needed to buy. That was a huge pain, and they didn't even let me know I would need it. So when I went to show the camera to my husband I was unaware that the lenses wouldn't work. He figured it out and now we have bought the extra adapter and love the whole set, but for buying a big kit like I did I figured it would have everything in it that I needed to start using it right away. Boy was I wrong!

MY REVIEW OF THE CANON A650-IS
Review created: 06/16/08(updated 10/02/09)
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've used Hasselblads since the late 60's. This camera (A650-IS) and it's sister the (G-9), are the only two point and shoot camera's that I take along for those quick shots. The (G-9) is slightly thinner, magnesium case, rechargeable battery,3" screen and also shoots raw. The (A650-IS)is slightly thicker (due to 4-AA batteries),plastic case,2-1/2" screen, does not shoot raw. BUT I prefer the (A650-IS) with a set of of 10 year lithium batteries and a 32 gig sd card. IT'S ALWAYS THERE,READY FOR ACTION!

  Canon PowerShot A650

This Powershot is the top of the A6xx series and it's worthy of all the accolades that follow.
The articulated view screen is very handy (almost necessary) for high or low angle shots. The 6X zoom is twice that of most p&s snapshooters and is great for getting in tight on the subject.
The 12.1 megapixel image chip is the same as the one in Canon's G9. This resolution allows enlargements up to any size I desire up to my printer's maximum 13X19.
The only shortcoming is that there isn't a hot shoe for external flash(as on the G9)so if I need more pop on the artificial light, I get out my SLR.
I got the camera in a package w/ a Canon AIO printer(Pixma MP470). The $300 was an excellent deal. If you find similar at that price range, it's well worth it.

This camera is amazing. I purchased it to upgrade the 8.0 powershot A630 I had. These cameras offer the highest quality for the most reasonable price. You get the closest you can to professional photos without having to purchase a higher priced SLR camera. This is where quality meets value!!!!!!

  King of the A-Series
Review created: 12/23/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The camera features a very robust optical/imaging system that is actually the same as that found in the much lauded (and more expensive) G9 camera. The camera maintains and improves on all of the things that made the old top-of-the-line A-series models such attractive cameras, including professional quality imaging with consumer level ease of use in a fairly compact point-and-shoot body at a value price point. The camera does all this while not missing out on the details, and contains a plethora of great features that make the camera a pleasure to use, like the flip-out swivel LCD. When combined with a the Canon Hack Development Kit (CHDK), which unlocks some added functionality (like ultra fast shutter speeds to capture things like water drops, RAW image capture, time lapse photography, and even a motion sensor script that can be used to capture lightning strikes) the things you can do with this camera become staggering.

The only negative about the camera is that it is slightly more bulky than the cameras that seem to be fashionable today. It's still a pretty compact camera and fits easily into a bag, purse, or pocket. Low light shooting isn't very good, though that's a problem with all digital cameras, and with the optical image stabilization, larger CCD, and higher ISO modes, you'll likely be able to take some low light pictures you would never have been able to with other cameras, even if they may come out grainy.

The bottom line is that this camera just takes absolutely stunning pictures of a quality that matches and sometimes exceeds that obtained by a professional level digital SLR and a bag full of lenses, while still being compact enough to fit in a (big) pocket and easy enough for my mom to use.

  should have saved $$
Review created: 08/19/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am very disappointed in this camera. It is very easy to use, and the pictures (for the most part are good), but the flash is horrible. I have lost out on so many good pictures because of the poor quality of the flash. If it is not bright sunlight the pictures are very dark. I wish I would have saved my money and waited a month and bought the new Xsi. Also the printer that came with it prints poor quality color and it took me 5 months to get my rebate. I love Canon products, just not this one. I would love to return it to Adoroma Camera and get my $$ back...so I could go out and buy a different Canon. I do not recommend this camera.

Good Buy Canon Powershot A650 IS
Review created: 09/09/08
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As with my previous Canon Powershot A720 IS, which was stolen, I found the A650 to be an excellent camera with everything I desire in a camera and more. I had a tough time finding the A720 again at a reasonable price, so I decided I'd go up a notch and see if I couldn't find a used A650. And I found one in excellent shape with 2 year warranty. The camera has the very cool and large LCD screen that can fold out for recording films and flips forward and back enabling you to hide the LCD while in its case. Obviously having 12.1 megapixels is just awesome and like my A720 this A650 also has the 6X zoom which I really like to have. They also jumped this camera upto 4 batteries which is great as you don't need to change or recharge batteries nearly as often. The different modes are neat and the IS image stabilization is great. Face recognition is very helpful as well. And in taking picture of the guitars I'm building, the macro feature works very well. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this camera. Our family has been buying canons for a good long while and of all the last cameras have been in the A series and all have served us extremely well.

It was broken when I received it. So I paid almost 200 dollars for a broken camera.. but on the bottom of the web page, it did say as is... but it did not say so in the title of the item. it had very god comments on how wonderful it was. so be careful.. Very disappointing... It was like throwing 200 dollars down the toilet.

One of the most versatile P&S digital cameras
Review created: 12/09/09
by:

The Canon A650 IS digital camera is an excellent combination of features that makes it a very useable all-round camera. File quality at 12.1MP is actually a cut above most any other P&S including Canon's own G9 and G10, both of which I own and therefore can use as a comparison. Having an articulated LCD screen is icing on the cake and can, at times, allow you to take shots that are not possible without one. Most often people refer to how articulated LCDs are useful in crowd situations, which they are. But I enjoy taking wildflower shots and being able to angle the LCD means I don't have to be on my stomach in the dirt for many of my flower pictures. The A650 IS is not a pocket camera but does fit nicely in a small belt pouch. It is a lot heftier than newer small digital cameras which some may find to be not desireable. However even with some type of Image Stabilization, which the A650 IS has, many P&S cameras are used at arm's length and the extra heft of the A650 actually helps stabilize the photo taking process even more. Using AA batteries adds to the weight but also to the travel flexibility of the A650. All things considered, the Canon A650 IS would be an excellent choice for that travel backup camera or the main camera for travelling abroad. One of the best out there and I have tried many brands and models over the years.

Awesome camera with tons of features!
Review created: 10/21/09

Bought this to replace a Canon A620 that I love and thought was going out on me ... turns out it was a humidity problem and is working fine again.

Also, I bought a Canon S5IS a while back for the long zoom and more megapixels, but what I was really looking for, are the features in this A650. It is an excellent camera and has everyhting you could want in a full feature point & shoot camera. I think the swivel LCD screen is a must and I love that I don't have to worry about the lens cap like on the S5IS. The upgrades from the A620 make this perfect choice for me. I did check with the seller on ebay to make sure that it's serial number fell outside the range of the recalled 'light leak issue' models. I'd highly recommend this model if you can find it and I'm sorry to see Canon doesn't make it anymore.

Buy it for the flip-out screen
Review created: 09/01/09

espec ( 36)

I loved the flip-out screen on my previous Canon, and had to have it again. This is about your only choice these days, without going to a DSLR. Bonus to get 6x optical zoom and image stabilization.

Other than that, not a lot of changes since my 610 model. Hi-ISO is helpful, but pictures can be grainy even without zooming in.

The flip-out screen changes your body-language when shooting, and allows you to literally shoot-from-the-hip.

Everything I read in other reveiws. There was one reveiw that said it best, it read "This camera blurs the line between point-and-shoot and pro. As I said in the title this camera has so many abilities I truly needed to read the book to understand how to work a point and shoot camera. The only downfall of this that i can forsee is your not easily going to hand this to a stranger walking byto give a self shot. Other than that it is extremely a great camera adn I have yet to run into any problems to complain about.

Even more features that I can conceive of!
Review created: 01/27/09

Unfortunately, Canon in their wisdom has discontinued this particular model and is not offering any others in the A-series with a rotating LCD display and viewfinder. Time will tell if Canon will see the light and bring out an A-series clone of the new G-10 model. Until then, places like EBay are the only reasonable place to obtain this type of camera with these features.

I love how this camera is held in my hand - the thickened right handhold is perfect for steadying the camera. The wrist strap actually looks useful - instead of the normal dangling string, this one is a reasonably long fabric strap with a plastic attachment that changes the size of the loop. This will allow the user to slide his hand into the wrist strap and cinch down the loop so that it makes it impossible for the camera to fall off. This improvement probably cost a mere 2 cents but is worth much more! Inside the handhold portion is the ability to have 4-AA batteries (I am using 2500 mAh NiMh rechargeables) which should give me approx 400-500 photos on one charge. That’s a huge increase over so many dinky little P&S cameras that only have 2-AA or even worse a proprietary Li-ion cell. While it does add bulk and weight to the camera, the ability to run for a week on one charged set of batteries instead of 1/2 a day, adds a dramatic amount of usefulness to me. By comparison, our office's tiny Sony camera will yield only 100-120 pics on a full charge!

This camera replaces a similar but older A95 five-year old model. The controls are all very familiar and logical but the number of extra features, more pixels, physical image stabilization (instead of digital), and the beautiful 6X lens are pure joy.
I purchased an 8-Gb memory card with the camera which is roughly equivalent to me using a 3-Gb card (if such a thing existed) in my other camera but the huge increase in pixels (12 mp compared to 5 mp) and the Digic III processor increases the quality of the photos immensely.

The negative comments - the battery compartment is just OK to open but requires some real finesse to close properly, the potential for breakage of the compartment lid is higher than average.
The lens should have favoured the wider angle instead of cow-towing to the P&S snapshot consumers who like longer telephotos. A 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens would be a lot more useful than what most consumers know what to do with but advanced amateurs would love it!!!
I took a couple of flash pictures and it seems the coverage of the flash is lacking at the top of the frame - more quantifiable testing will be needed to verify this. Ideally, a hot-shoe would be nice but then again that's why Canon designed the G-10 model for.
This camera is about 5% bigger in dimensions than my previous camera so it just barely squeezes into my after-market case. I may have to look at getting a slightly larger case for it to fit into.

  GREAT CAMERA
Review created: 01/10/09

0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had this camera before from e bay(different seller) but it was stolen.
It is a great camera with all the features of an SLR.
I use it as a back up camera to my dslr.
I like the fact that you can use it very much like a dslr. It is better to use this camera with a high speed digital card because in my opinion the high speed card lets you take clearer pictures and has a fast return time. However with a regular card you will do fine. Night shots are harder to get but not impossible.
This camera makes everything easier. Canon outdid themselves with this camera model. It is nice to know that you can still find it on ebay brand new.
I am very happy with this camera.
there is nothing to dislike about it in my opnion. It is a little on the bulky/heavy side but that is nothing compared to how it performs.
Great camera.!!! I would say this product outshines the other cameras in it's league.
