Excellent Printer - Great Features, Easy to Use + Setup
Review created: 03/29/06
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

This printer is a great machine that prints exceptional photos and has advanced features which are easy to use. It has a five (5) color ink system (4 dye-based inks, and black ink) that allows it to produce true-life photos along with laser-quality text. The iP4200 can print a 4" x 6" borderless photo in less than 60 seconds.

The great thing I like about this printer is that it has a dual paper path which means you can keep your photo paper stored in one tray and plain paper in another. Then when you're ready to print, you just choose which tray to pull paper from. You can even print on both sides of a paper. It also has the PictBridge feature found on most Canon printers so you can just connect your camera and print without the use of a computer.

  Great Printer but Expensive Ink!
Review created: 04/09/06

This printer has great features for low-volume home printer applications. Canon technical support and software is excellent. My only complaint with this printer and most ink-jet printers is the business model shift to profits from ink. I've owned this printer for 4 months now and I need a new magenta cartridge after printing about 30 4x6" prints (the remaining cartridges are at 40% level). The Canon technical service said one of his colleagues is seeing about 80 4x6" prints per ink set. While I'm seeing less, and I have about 125 pages of text in addition to the prints, the Canon experience translates to about $1 per 4x6" print including paper. Compare this to dye sublimation stand-alone photo printer costs of $0.28 per print! In short: great printer features, good print quality & speed, high operating costs! The low initial cost of the printer is minisicule to its operating cost - each ink refill is $65 (inlcuding rebates and combinational color ink packaging). If you have to buy two refills a year - thats a $130 ANNUAL operating cost - the $100 printer cost doesn't seem that cheap anymore! Pay attention to ink costs when doing your printer purchase research!

Fast Printing + Inexpensive Ink Refills = Real Winner
Review created: 06/20/06(updated 06/20/06)
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is the first Canon printer I have owned. Before buying the Canon, I had owned several HP printers I was tired of the expensive ink cartridges and the way the printers seemed to last about a year and a half.

Most of the printing we do is text using black ink. My experience with the Canon is so incredibly superior to the HP that I can't imagine why I ever bought 5 HP printers in a row without checking anything else.

The Canon Pixma iP4200 prints quickly and clearly. The black ink cartridge lasts twice as long as the HP printer cartridges did and costs half as much. The black ink cartridge costs less than $15.

Though we have not had to replace a color cartridge yet, I have checked the prices at my local Office Max and the cartridges are $11 each.

The Canon is different from the HP printers I have owned. The Canon holds 5 ink cartridges. The HP uses 2. The Canon holds four small tanks for color printing, the three primary colors plus a black ink cartridge. Then there is a large black ink cartridge for printing text using just black ink. If you put your printer settings so that the default is greyscale on "fast" mode printing, the printer uses only the main black ink cartridge.

The HP printers I've used in the past had two cartridges, one that held black ink and one that was color. The black ink cartridge cost $30 and lasted half as long as the Canon's under $15 cartridge. With the HP you only have to replace one color cartridge which sounds good at first, right? But then if you run out of one of the primary colors, you have to replace the entire ink cartridge which costs around $45. With the Canon, if you run out of one color, you replace one cartridge for $11. At worst, replace the three colors and it's still less than the HP.

The best thing about the Canon iPixma is the low operating costs. The second best thing is the speed of the printer which is very fast. I highly recommend this printer.

Canon iP4200 Printer is a winner
Review created: 10/07/06
by:
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Canon has always offered more printer for the money than any other brand and the iP4200 follows in that tradition. In addition to lowest cost per page in it's class, seemingly the norm with Canon printers, it offers duplex printing which can save you a tremendous amount of time and paper.

While you won't see this feature mentioned in the specifications, with the purchase of an inexpensive tray, some new software and a simple change to the printers instruction set, you can modify the iP4200 to print directly to the surface of printable CDs and DVDs. Adding this great feature only cost $30 and everything you need is available right here at eBay. It works much better than Epsons system.

While I can only find two cons to this printer, they're nasty ones. Canon has followed Epson's lead and installed chips on it's cartridges to disuade you from refilling them. They also reduced the amount of ink the cartridges hold compared to previous printers and the price is somewhat higher with no real deals available here at eBay or elsewhere yet.

Despite it's ink costs, the iP4200's features place it well ahead of anything else in its class.

canon once the last compeditor of epson has made an eror that may cause them to have to reform there policy and I am sure epson is laughing all the way to there banks WHY you ask OK the epson 4000 series was I think the last printer with unchiped carts. the 4200 and up are all chipped if you do your reserch you will find that canon will not let other companies make or refill there carts. the cost of OEM canon CLI-8 carts. is in the $60 on up range where the epson R340 carts on special can be purchased for $0.95 so take it on account aneyone in there right mind will chose the epson printers simply because of cost (BOTH PRINTERS PRINT EXELENT PHOTOS) and the epson sold in the U.S.A. also prints on CD/DVD the ip4200 dose not come with CD/DVD in U.S.A. but dose in europe another grave mistake by canon to to make maters worse if you wish to refill the canon carts. canon has you sign away your rights by making you state you are refilling and so your garentee is now void WHITCH IS ILLEGALL IN THE STATES I have two epson printers and bought the canon only because it was on sale cheep but sold without cartridges NOW I SEE WHY IT WAS SO CHEAP do your reserch befor buying any new canon printers yes they print exelent photos but so dose epsons newest line of printers ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY 200% MORE FOR INK ? then I gess you must be A millonare so in my book canon has just priced themselves out of the market and another point epson has 6 colors on there new line of photo printers the epsons can be recharged with A chip recharger canon can not HOPE THIS HELPS YOU MAKE A GOOD CHOICE ON YOUR NEXT PHOTO PRINTER at this time epson has no compeditors

Canon PIXMA ip4200 Color Bubble Jet Printer
Review created: 08/05/06
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This printer does a fantastic job of photo printing. This is the third series of Canon Bubble Jet photo printers I have owned as well as an HP Photosmart 1000. The Canon 4200 exceeds the print quality of the HP 1000.

The biggest advantage this series of printers has is its individual ink tanks. When a color runs out you just need to replace or refill that color, thus saving a lot of money. (note of warning: do not refill the 8-BK Black photo ink tank with the standard ink supplied in many of the refill kits from Costco or Bestbuy. It is a pigment based ink and will clog the print head. This black ink seams to work fine in the PGBK 5 text printing tank. But the 8-BK tank uses a dye based ink.)

I have printed thousands of photo's using bubble jet printers and the Canon PIXMA ip4200 has provided the best overall picture quality at the lowest per picture cost.

I'm thrilled with my Canon Pixma iP4200 Printer
Review created: 09/08/06(updated 02/04/08)

When my Epson Stylus 880 began to let me know that it was on it's last leg I started doing some research. The Canon Pixma iP4200 was very well rated in Consumer Reports. Of great import to me is the fact that there are Linux drivers available for this printer and it was well rated by LinuxPrinting.org. The printer is on an XP box and is shared so that my Linux box can print to it! My daughter and son-in-law had recently purchaes this same model of printer and they're quite happy with theirs too.
I like the seperate ink tanks and the replacable print head. I had been using a continuous feed ink system on my last printer and loved it. Unfortunately, the one for this printer is too expensive for me to justify but I can get refill ink for a very resonable price. That was a big consideration for me as I think that all the OEM ink cartridges are totally outrageous in price.
I was also quite pleased by the features of this printer. From time to time I print a family news letter and the duplex printing capabilities of the iP4200 save me a lot of hassles and paper now. The printer is very quiet in operation and the print quality is very, very good.
I don't print labels often enough to keep some in the second feed tray but I can see that being very convenient for some folks. The labels that I have printed, mostly address labels, print very nicely and simply with no feeding problems.
Another feature that I like is the ability the printer has to power itself down after a period of inactivity and then power back up on it's own when a print job is submitted.
I'm quite pleased with my new Canon Pixma iP4200 and would recommend it to anyone. The price is right and I couldn't have asked for more than what this printer provides!

  Canon Pixma 4200- Love it!
Review created: 07/23/06
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought the Canon Pixma 4200 printer to replace the original HP that came with my home computer. It is getting almost impossible to buy replacement ink cartridges for the HP and they cost around $30 each. Taking that into cosideration,I decided to bid on the Canon Pixma 4200 on Ebay and won it for a little more than the cost of the two cartridges.I also did some research on the web and found the Canon Pixma 4200 was highly recommended and the cost of the cartridges was very low.I checked around locally and found this to be true also.I am very happy to say,I love this printer. It is a very smooth and fast operating printer. The print quality is very good and clean. I have not used it for photos yet,but I expect it will do a wonderful job.I highly recommend this printer.

This is a very high quality ink jet printer that provides both business/personal text print and photos. I bought one at retail and decided to replace my wife's old printer with the same model. Ebay offered a very good deal at auction and the seller executed the transaction flawlessly.

I bought this for a regular printer, and for something to print my envelopes (that I use for business). After trying 3 different printers, this one was definitely the keeper. I haven't used it for photo printing, so I'm not sure how it does with that-- but regular printer is awesome! And the replacement ink cartridges are pretty inexpensive too!!

This is a really great printer for the price. The only thing I don't like about it is the cost of the ink cartridges. Very pricey. The good news is that the printer is not an ink hog like most HP's and Epsons.

  Worked for only a week

This printer worked great for about 125 photos. After that it kept indicating a print catridge was low, when it was not. I had to re-start the printer everytime I printed a photo. The print catridges only lasted about 150 photos. I calculated .60 per picture cost! Now the printer is just gathering dust and replaced within two weeks of purchase.

  I LOVE this printer!

I had a Canon printer before and liked it but I LOVE this model. It prints beautiful clear pictures. I have printed quite a few 5x7 pictures without using much ink. The tanks still show full. It has 2 paper sources - a tray and the usual in back feed. It said it did not recommend for printing on postcards but I have done several without jamming. It is VERY fast on both color and black/white text. I have found nothing to complain about! I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

  Great Cheap Photo Printer
Review created: 06/18/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this product because it was cheap, and cannon makes a great printer. I would recommend this printer to anyone who is using this printer for general printing and basic photo printing. This is not only a great photo printer; it is also good all around printer. This has a lot of features you would not expect from a printer at this price like double sided printing, and multiple feed locations including a feed tray. I found that you want to use cannon photo paper any other brand did not turn out at all.

The great:
• Cheap
• Usable features
• Great photo quality
• Easy to use

Not so great:
• Ink is more expensive than the printer
• Must use Cannon photo paper

I decided to buy a new printer after my older Canon printer died. I looked at the specs and decided the Pixma ip4200 would fit all of my needs.

After I won the auction and actually got the printer, I found out it does so much more than I expected it too. It is super fast and prints a very high quality product.

I am very happy with the printer and my experience buying it on E-Bay.

  Color Printer

I did some research and determined this was the type of printer I wanted. I confirmed that with the technician that services my computer. This printer is outstanding when producing high quality color pictures I looked at prices on various websites and local stores. I found some for sale on eBay and bid on a couple and lost. This one came available and I bid on it. The bidding inched up a bit but I WON! The seller was just great about the packaging and shipment of the printer. It arrived in perfect condition. I got an excellent product at a great price. SUPER!
Thanks to eBay and a great seller.

Dated printer - damn nice photos
Review created: 02/08/09
by:

While no longer the cutting edge printer from Canon, this is still an excellent printer. It produces speedy print at 27 PPM, does duplex for those reports for the office, saves paper too, and has two different feed trays, one wholly internal, and one external with more capacity. That lends itself to having your photo paper in one and plain paper in the other. Also prints without borders, and probably most importantly, it doesn't jam. Kinda a rarity, that.

Probably the best thing about it is the fact that second source ink producers now have ink for this printer at bargain prices - not Canon refurb tanks, but new with cartridge chips that this printer accepts as a new Canon ink cartridges. In and of itself, that is important savings.

  Inexpensive quality printer
Review created: 01/29/09

The ip4200 give consistent quality photo prints. Genuine Canon Ink is moderately priced relative to others.

There are CISS kits available for this printer but buy only quality CIS's as they can be problematic and are a pain to install. Be aware that you do need the chips from the Canon Ink Cartridges to fasten to the CISS cartridges and ink is not included in this eBay auction.

The combination of this ip4200 Canon printer and a quality CISS system makes for consistently good printing at a very low price.

  Canon iP 4200 Printer
Review created: 01/07/09

I've owned/used an iP4200 for over 3 years, printing photos (up to 8.5 x 11--excellent colors!!) and for general printing (over 5 CASES of paper without a jam-up!!) Whither you're looking for a "dedicated" printer for photos or a fast printing "general" printer, the iP4200 is an very good and reasonably priced choice. Ink, as with any printer, can get expensive quick! Refillable cartridges has helped!!

Much faster printing than my HP printer, and the individual ink tanks are a must for my business - I do a lot of printing (but not enough to warrant a color laser printer) and this makes it sooooo much easier to handle color ink changes!
