Uppers:
The Canon PIXMA MP500 is a dependable machine. This beauty prints sharp and runs quiet too. The ink cartridges are a little larger than the HP stuff and the fact that you have seperate colors means that you don't have to throw away cartridges so fast. The copy machine and scanners both work fine. You will need to read the manual for this one as it is a bit less user friendly than other printers. print right from the Memory card/camera without the PC makes it great for on-location photography event sales etc. Cartridges are a real deal and last quite awhile.
Downers:
The printer sometimes fails to recognize the alternate (single size) black cartridge when the double runs out. I was under the impression that it automatically reverts to using the smaller one when the larger runs out, but it hasn't been doing that and I had to buy a double again. But the price for cartridges is great and you can really save by shopping for them on Ebay.

Wow, I can't say enough about this printer. I've tried Lexmark, HP, Dell, and now my second Canon - and THIS THING BEATS all.
PROS: It exceeds all my expectations - automatic 2 sided printing, card reader, super fast printing, AMAZING PHOTO printing... and the list goes on. Maximum DPI is 9600 X 2400. I actually SCANNED a professional photo that we had taken and printed off a copy on Canon photo paper and it looked even BETTER than the original. Our home photos that we print off look professional themselves. This thing is awesome. I love the 2 paper trays - I put my 8.5 x 11's in one tray and 4 x 6 photos in the other. No need to switch back and forth. And this thing prints FAST. I am able to refill the cartridges without any hassle and this is a HUGE plus for me. AND FOR around $150 - I haven't been able to find it cheaper anywhere. I'm returning my HP1510 that I just bought from bestbuy. THIS THING IS GREAT!!
CONS: It's big - but I like it like that - I have no need to save space. If you want to buy refill cartridges, you'll probably spend at least $65.00 for the 5 cartridges.
TIP: Make sure you get good quality photo paper to print your photos. This makes all the difference. My favorite has become the Canon Photo Paper PLUS Glossy. It isn't the most expensive of the Canon papers, but I have found it to be the actual best overall.

this printer is great but finding replacement cartridges are so hard and costly due to the fact they are hard to find you have to pay the price.. should I have known this I might have chosen a different canon printer

I have gone through two Epson printers, an HP, a Lexmark and a one other Canon. I bought this printer to replace my Canon S920 who finally gave a fatal error probably due to exhausted print heads.
This printer is very fast and prints excellent text as well as photos. It has autoduplexing. Sometimes cuts off tops of pictures, but I just had to adjust my photo-taking abilities to correct for this (center the subjects better). It literally sips ink. Even the starter cartridges that came with this printer lasted much longer than I would have expected.
Note: You must use good photo paper to get good photo prints. I had some old generic photo paper that I tried to print on and the pics came out terribly grainy and a lot of lost detail. When I used Canon Plus, prints were beautiful. They dry almost instantly. As a cheaper alternative, I highly recommend FreePhotoPaper.com. Their paper (and very reasonable ink replacement carts) is as good or better than the Canon paper and inks.
Only thing I can think of to improve this printer would be WiFi networking ability built in.

I do not know how to rate this product as i never received it. The person who sold it to me never sent it to me. But according to all of the reviews that i have read from other web sites it is a good printer. I accually went out and bought the canon pixma mp830. which i think is an even better buy for the money. they take the same ink, so it would have to be your preference.

I haven't had it long or used it enought to make an accurate evaluation. At this point I am well satisfied with it. I bought it because I have other Canon product which are good and the rating on Pm-500 are good.
