The EOS Digital Rebel makes shooting easy and fun

I bought my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT on eBay ~4 months ago as an upgrade from my Canon digital ELPH. WOW. Its been hard to put it down. Everything about this camera is right on: the weight, the feel, the LCD, the shutter speed, the size, the quality, the interface, etc. Not to mention – I got a killer price on eBay that saved me $250+ from my local camera shops…. Enough that I could invest in a new lens set and flash.

The most impressive piece of the Canon Digital Rebel is its speed and ease of use – the Rebel XT is very much an advanced camera capable of any photographic requirements… that said, the Rebel shouldn’t frighten even the most novice photographer – its interface is simple and understandable. The Rebel is a perfect balance of simplicity / automatic controls and advanced / manual refinement. The Rebel XT has an impressively fast and concise auto-focus and takes rapid photos (great for moving photography or subjects).

Most important, the JPG quality and print outs are fantastic. Framed nature shots (10x12) adorn the walls of my apartment and look fantastic. The pictures are excellent for the web, for computers and even look great when rendered as slide-shows on my 50 inch Sony LCD TV. The software bundled with the camera is easy to install and use… and most importantly, its fast. Many other software packages are hefty and stale.

Must have add-ons: Owners of the EOS Digital Rebel XT will certainly appreciate a full-size flash as the attached pop-up flash is workable but far from ideal in low-light settings. As always, one of the major benefits of any SLR is its ability to use different lenses – adding a telephoto lens is great for sports and still-shots of people; wide-angel lenses work great for scenery and nature.

Great size, great picture quality, but not perfect

Cameras I currently own:

1) Canon 20D
2) Canon 5D
3) Sony DSC-F828
4) Canon SD400

The Good:
1) Amazing size, it is significantly smaller than the 20D - I can fit this in my backpack whereas the 20D won't fit. IE, I can bring this into some places where I cannot bring my 20D - and still get DSLR quality pics.
2) Solidly built - no problems with the construction quality. You won't need better weather seals unless you are a war correspondent or Everest sherpa.
3) Fast writing to CF - Canon fixed the worst problem with the old Rebel - ie, its slow I/O speed. This one writes fast and in fact, can go for longer without running out of buffer space than my 20D (but this is because of a slower shooting speed too). I got over 20 RAW shots to CF in one burst - using a SanDisk Ultra II 2GB card - fastest on the market.
4) Fast start-up. Instant start-up, just like the 20D. No more missing shots like the old Rebel.
5) Noise and pic quality similiar to 20D.

The Bad:
1) No software ISO3200 mode. Inconvenient for low light no-flash situations. Canon cheaped-out here, it's just software. Someone should write a hack.
2) Noise still noticeable at ISO1600 - just like the 20D. For this price it's fine, but the 5D set the new standard.
3) 3fps - limits your creativity action-shot wise. 20D gets 5fps, which is significantly more. If you don't do action shots, you won't care.
4) Pictures are slightly smaller than 20D - slightly lower resolution, but again, you won't care.

Overall:
Great camera for the price, worlds better than the competition at a similar price point. But as I always say, you get what you pay for. It's no 20D, but it is smaller and cheaper, and sometimes that's worth more than ISO3200 and 5fps.

Here's my review on the Canon Rebel XT
Review created: 08/03/08

Well first off, this is a wonderful camera. I have been wanting a EOS digital camera every since they came out with them, unfortunately due to cost I was not able to until recently. That brings me to one excellent selling point of this item, it was inexpensive. The camera is brand new, not a refurbs like some people will sell you. The package deal I got for the camera was well below the retail selling price, it included camera, carrying case, lens, 2 tripods, 1 gb flash card, battery and charger, lens cleaning kit. The quality of the pictures is outstanding! Even a beginer can operate this camera with ease. I don't think there is anything I do not like about it. I recommend this camera to everyone looking to purchase a EOS digtal.

I bought the camera because my son is going to be a senior this year. He plays both football and basketball so I wanted a really good camera to get some close up action shots of him when he's playing. I got a sceamin deal on the camera and the many accessories it came with, and it takes fantastic pics. Everyone I show them to say they look like professional photos. I've bought many things off ebay including a few more accessories for the camera and I don't have one complaint.

  Awesome camera
Review created: 08/01/08

This camera has lots of features. The only thing that I dislike about the camera is that you can only use the standard color image while using the camera in any of the automatic modes. However this camera has some great color options while in manual mode including b/w and sepia. Great resolution, and ease of use are two things that make this a great camera. Very powerful for the price of the camera. My recommendation is to purchase this camera if you are an amateur and are not going to be doing any professional shooting. This camera has enough features to keep the amateur happy for a lifetime.

Rebel XT is awesome. Fast, fast, fast!
Review created: 07/04/08

This is my first DSLR after many great super-zooms failed to focus on birds in flight. Now I can not only quickly switch to manual focus if needed, I can take continuous pictures as fast as 5 frames per second. Even with flash this camera is super fast, taking less than 1 second between shots. I have taken 10 flash pictures in a row of the grandkids playing and it never slowed down. The shorter the lens the faster the focus, but with the AF/MF switch it does great with a 300mm lens at catching birds in flight even when autofocus can't lock. I prefer manual focus on birds since it will snap the shot no matter what, when set to MF. In autofocus at 300mm it may not find enough light unless you have a $1,000+ lens. Great lenses are very pricey for Canons but there are some good sharp ones from the EOS film series cameras that can be gotten cheap with the film camera nobody wants. Look for auctions with extra lenses as the kit lenses are usually very low quality for Canon. You can find a 35mm Rebel film camera with 3 lenses for under $100 and chances are one of those lenses is worth more than the whole lot will cost you. There are also some great deals on medium and high end lenses if you do a lot of deep searching for poorly worded listings. I won a 28-135mm IS USM for $53 that is $350-500 new. You have to look hard though because Canon is one of the most popular auctions on eBay and there are a lot of bids on a good lens. Well worth the hunt for a good deal on a great lens. Maybe someday I'll find a good L series for under $500, but in the meantime I am very happy with the XT and using my Canon 75-300, 28-135 IS, and even the EF-S 18-55 USM kit lens which is very fast and sharp for close range work. Stick to Canon lenses if you can, as even there worst ones are generally better than the 3rd party lenses. There are exceptions but do your research before investing in any lenses. There are lots of good sites that rank Canon lenses by sharpness and speed, read them before you waste your money on fancy sounding specs. The sharpest lenses are the "primes" but some of the zooms are very good and a lot more useful. I also have the 2x converter which is good but does degrade the image some and makes autofocus almost impossible in low light. Still for some shots you need the reach, like my Oly SP550 with 18x optical and 100x digital zoom, now that is reach. Too bad it can't even come close to the Canon in speed and quality. If only Canon would make a CMOS super-zoom! The S5 just doesn't have the speed or sharpness of the EOS, not to mention quality. I love my XT!

I bought this item for my wifes birthday present. Which she is happy about and with. The first thing that i would say would be is don't have employees call to sell upgraded warranties that are over priced and wont help if you are not living in the right city or part of the nation. Second Tyler who called to speak with my wife, he was talking about skiing and if she skied instead of the camera. When Tyler finally got to the camera my wife declined to buy the lens that were not included and the warranties. Tyler had the balls to ask if she knew what type of camera this is and if she even knew how to work it.. To let everyone know she majored in Photography and had the 35mm canon rebel with the EF lens and this camera would be just an upgrade to get away from film. After being on hold my wife had to get ready for work so she handed me the phone to talk. Tyler gets on the phone and tries to tell me that the insurance is $19.00, when on the ebay item description page it says only $9.95 and optional. After Tyler says that its a mistake he tries to make it better by giving me free insurance, which did make me happy but then he tries to tell me to leave a positive feedback for him,. mentioning his name before he will process the order and ship out the item. He is attempting to make me leave something nice for him in praise when he had upset me and my wife. I tell him that isn't how i work with ebay, I leave my feedbacks after i get the item. Tyler is not focused on the customer service part of the business, As a manager after hearing this about one of my employees I would want to fire him. As Tyler is a disease and cancerous, if he treats all of the customers like me then there are lots of unhappy people. As a GM in the restaurant business i could not afford to have an employee like Tyler turning away customers after their first visit to my restaurant. My wife and I are happy with the camera but we have a sour taste in our mouths from Tyler and his customer relation skills, any will probably never attempt to deal with your company due to this experience.
