Great Camera -- BEWARE of LOUSY LENS KITS!
Review created: 11/23/07

Ok, this is a great camera. I'm not going to cover the features of this camera, other reviewers did that well. Let me point out a few things to watch out for.

___LOUSY LENS KITS___ The Canon EOS40D is a fantastic camera, but lots of sellers will try to getcha by bundling a $1200 camera body with a really mediocre lens. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a camera, don't get seduced by 4 lens kits.

First, decide if you are planning on using a camera bag everywhere you go or not. Because if you are not taking a camera bag with you, you do NOT want 4 lenses -- 3 of the 4 will just stay home 95 percent of the time. What you will need in this case is ONE REALLY GREAT LENS.

The most common lens offered with this camera is an 18-55mm lens followed by a 17-85mm lens. Now that is a really nice wide angle lens down at 17/18mm. However, you really get very poor (55mm) to extremely mediocre (75mm) telephoto capacity with either of those lenses. If you're looking for a great all purpose lens, avoid both of these.

Next, you'll see the 70-300mm lens. That's a great telephoto zoom and gives you lots of pretty nice range. But keep in mind that 70mm is NOT wide angle. That means you'll struggle to shoot close-ups of anything. No wide-angle shots of buildings, landscapes, mountains, or even large groups of people at the dinner table. A great second lens, but not a great single all-purpose lens.

Any lens kit that mixes up 2 or 3 of the above lenses are still leaving you short of ONE GREAT all-purpose lens.

The best all-purpose lens out there is the 28-135mm zoom. 28mm is plenty wide-angle enough for anyone. And 135mm gives you enough zoom lens to shoot the kids soccer game close-up from across the entire field. With 10MP, you can still crop down for a nice close-up and get great high-quality prints. With this lens, you won't need a camera bag for 90% of you who are buying this camera for non-professional work.

Finally, avoid kits with lens correctors that screw into the end of your lens and give you more or less "magnification". These lenses are uniformly lousy.

Also, the "bonus" items in these kits, like the tripods and camera cases are cheap, cheap, cheap. Better to buy these components separately.

Last, there's a great product out there called "Camera Armor" I know they make it for the EOS 30D. As soon as its available for this camera, I would recommend it. It is a custom made rubber housing that fits like a glove over the camera's body. It does a nice job of keeping your camera from getting banged up or badly scratched.

  A Real Upgrade!!
Review created: 09/08/07(updated 11/18/07)

Just released in early September, 2007, Canon 40D is their 6th generation prosumer DSLR (D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 30D and now 40D) I personally think this 40D should have been the 30D. 30D wasn't that much of an upgrade from 20D. It was more of an enhancements than total upgrade. I'd like to call it 25D. I'm sure many of you agree and many photographers who owned 20D didn't bother to upgrade to 30D and either waited for next version or move to more robust 5D.

The Canon 40D is another matter. Canon has taken a major step forward and included many new features that live up to the new name. So let's see what's new.

(1) The 40D is 10MP camera while 20D & 30D were 8MP. 2MP isn't a big jump and I'd liked it to have 12MP - but that would be competing against their own 5D market, so I think they decided to put 10MP on there. Maybe 50D will have 12MP+.

(2) LCD on the back is now huge 3 inch screen and it's much brighter and easier to read in bright daylight. Big screen is definitely welcome!!

(3) NEW Dust removal system which weren't available in 20D/30D - and IT WORKS!! If you've often experienced dust spots on the images before, you'll love these new features.

(4) NEW faster image processor called DIGIC III used in 1D MK3 and 1Ds MK3. Thanks to the new processor, 40D can now kick out 6.5 frames per second and can buffer 75 image burst in 11.5 seconds. That's almost twice increase burst number than 30D. (75 burst is a lot for most of us. I do use burst shots as well, but they end up being less than 15 so 75 is quite a lot)

(5) 14-bit ADC vs 12-bit of 30D. New 14-bit will yield better color gradients and its quality especially on the shadow & highlight details.

(6) LIVE VIEW - I'm not sure how many pro photographers are going to be using this feature, but I think it's a trend these days to include it.

There are more new features that I haven't covered here, but the ones I mentioned here should give you a good idea of what to expect on 40D. Priced at around $1300 for the body-only version, I think it's a great prosumer camera. If you have Rebel XT/XTi and wish to upgrade to more robust, faster camera, this is it. If you own 20D, or 30D you can probably get around $600~$800 for your camera and it will be nice upgrade for around $500~$700.

  Nice camera
Review created: 10/05/08

Very nice camera, user friendly with easy to navigate menus and plenty of custom settings. All the needed buttons and dials are easy to reach and operate without taking you eye off of your target. The large display is nice and handy when utilizing the live view feature/play back.
I would recommend if you buy this camera in a package that it has the Image Stabilization lens.. Got mine without them and regret doing so, will need to upgrade soon. As many have posted, in low light conditions or tele your pictures quality will suffer. (should have listened to everyone.....)
The batteries actually last as long as they claim with the last two getting well over 1000 shots each, but I have noticed they don't last as long if using the live view feature a lot.
Overall I am pleased with the quality, feel and construction. Until I upgrade to a new lens I won't comment on the picture quality, wouldn't be fair to the camera.
This is more camera than I can handle for now but I am looking forward to growing into it and using it to its fullest potential.
I looked at the Nikon D80 & the Canon XSI but I liked the live view feature and the fire rate.
Hope this helps,

Cheers.

Excellent camera. I'm still learning how to use everything but so far I have been getting some excellent action photos. I went with the kit with fewer lenses but a little better quality len and so far everything is great. I hope down the road to pick up a higher end lens when I get more knowledgeable with the features of hte camera. Pyxis Camera was great to work with, no complaints.

Hello, I am a frequent user of the Canon 40d. I however did purchase mine from a local Canon dealer. I thought id share my likes and dislikes. So lets start of with the positives.

Likes:
* Very good all around camera
* For the price it's good with low light situations. However it also depends on the lens. In this case I am referring to stock lens that came with the camera (18 - 200mm).
*Built in flash. Not the best but it does do its purpose.
* Durable

Dislikes:
* Absolutely nothing

Notes on Buying Cameras off of Ebay:
* Do not go for bundled packages. They tend to give you low quality and knock off lenses. This isn't everyone but there are sellers out there that do that.
* Really understand what you are buying and understand what equipment will fit your needs.
* if the 40d is going to be your first SLR you might want to go for a lenses that is pretty universal. I think the 18-200mm is great for starters. Gives you the ability to get up close with the 18 focal length and then if you want to do some distance shots the 200mm really will take you there.
* Do your homework before you purchase.
* A 2GB card I think is more than enough for beginners. I started with one and for 2 years never filled it up, except when I ?shoot raw then it fills fast cause of the high density of information you are storing.

Eos 40D is a really classic Camera. and 40D is good for a cheap cam. Posters often remark about the live view, large LCD, spot meter and other capabilities of the 40D.

However, my favorite innovation is the three selectable Camera User Settings found on the mode dial. Being an old film guy, I do like to switch settings with a dial rather than a menu or an LCD read-out

Canon 40D with Canon EF 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens
Review created: 09/12/08

Just opening the box of th Canon 40D and then touching the camera body - you immediately feel the quality and the professionalism that comes with this product. The camera body itself is quite heavy and it gets even heavier when you attach the lens. That is why the IS (Image Stabalization) of the lens comes in so handy. Right out of the box you can take great pictures in fully automatic mode and the manual modes are easy to understand.

Read The Manual! Even if you are a professional / experienced photographer you should read the manual. This helps you get to know the new technologies available in this camera, the options you now have and how to get those options executed.

This kit lens takes great pictures. The high aperture doesn't let you get extremely blurred backgrounds easily or parts of a face unfocused when doing a headshot but it seems really good quality. The lens feels good build material. Overall the advantage of this lens as walk around is the IS (Image Stabalization).

The batteries last a long time but you should have a couple more just in case. The battery charger is really good, easy to understand when the batteries are ready. The software discs give you everything you could need if you don't already have similar software that does the same functions purchased.

The memory card (CF) should be appropriate. Most people say to worry about the speed (133x/150x/200x) which is good, but also look into buying a huge CF Card so you don't have to stop enjoying the camera ever. My opinion is: Stack of Batteries, and HUGE CF Card!

So... This camera is great quality (ofcourse, its a canon dslr), easy to use for beginners and great to use for experienced photographers.

I spent a lot of time researching digital slr cameras before making the investment. My decision eventually came down to the Nikon D80 or the Canon 40D model. Th Canon won by features, cost, software included and compatability with lenses I already own.
The 40D surpasses the Nikon D80 and matches the Nikon D200 in features. Right from the box the camera has impressed me. I'm very happy with my decision, and I think that I ended up with an incredible value.

  Best dslr for the cash
Review created: 09/01/08

A fantastic upgrade from any of the previous dslrs that canon makes including the 30d 20d and xt. The camera is pretty well rounded. The 6.5 frames per second are enough to capture sports. Camera works fantastic even in low lighting conditions where your iso needs to be jacked up extremely usable at 1250 and very good at 1600, 3200 is questionable on certain occasions. If you shoot in a studio, although i previously thought it was useless, live view is nice. You can see you composition and zoom in up to 10x to make sure the focus is where you need it. Overall a joy to work with, most professional non full frame camera out there. (50d just came out)

The goods were delivered, but not without me having to email the store twice to find out if the items had been shipped and again for the tracking information. Once I receive the merchandize, I notice that some of the items shipped were not the ones advertized in the ad. I emailed the store, was told to return them, and that they would send the correctly advertized items. They did replace the items and I am now satisfied. However, make sure you get what you pay for.

Great camera! I really enjoy this camera.
Review created: 08/16/08

I searched reviews by professionals and first time buyers and everyone had good things to say about it. I really enjoy taking pictures with this camera and get really great pictures. I also bought a DVD that tells you how to use the camera and that helped me learn all of the functions of the camera within hours. I have had the camera for 3 weeks now and have some great photos. This is my DSLR. I own a Canon AE1 and have taken a lot of pictures with it over the years. The DSLR is so much better since you dont have to wait on film development. If you want a fairly professional camera that will take great pictures this is it. You have to be willing to get out there and experiment with it. It has point and shoot functions, but does so much more. I also own a Canon G3, which is digital. Its a good camera, but doesnt compare to the 40D.

I like my Canon EOS 40D camera because aside from taking good pictures, you can do so many variations with how you can make it appear, like making the background clear or blurry,or putting more light or less light into the picture. I rate this camera excellent.

I'm glad I have this opportunity to write this review regarding my first purchaes on Ebay.

I bid on a digital camera, won the bid, paid my money,$1000.000, and proceded to get ripped off. The person never delivered the item to mn. They claim that they were not the person listing the item. Someone hacked into their ebay and paypall account. They sent me a tracking number for ups that shows an item that was delivered to them just day before.

Thanks Ebay for the great experience!!! and the 1K loss.

Gene
