Great Camera -- BEWARE of LOUSY LENS KITS!
Review created: 11/23/07
240 of 247 people found this review helpful.

Ok, this is a great camera. I'm not going to cover the features of this camera, other reviewers did that well. Let me point out a few things to watch out for.

___LOUSY LENS KITS___ The Canon EOS40D is a fantastic camera, but lots of sellers will try to getcha by bundling a $1200 camera body with a really mediocre lens. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a camera, don't get seduced by 4 lens kits.

First, decide if you are planning on using a camera bag everywhere you go or not. Because if you are not taking a camera bag with you, you do NOT want 4 lenses -- 3 of the 4 will just stay home 95 percent of the time. What you will need in this case is ONE REALLY GREAT LENS.

The most common lens offered with this camera is an 18-55mm lens followed by a 17-85mm lens. Now that is a really nice wide angle lens down at 17/18mm. However, you really get very poor (55mm) to extremely mediocre (75mm) telephoto capacity with either of those lenses. If you're looking for a great all purpose lens, avoid both of these.

Next, you'll see the 70-300mm lens. That's a great telephoto zoom and gives you lots of pretty nice range. But keep in mind that 70mm is NOT wide angle. That means you'll struggle to shoot close-ups of anything. No wide-angle shots of buildings, landscapes, mountains, or even large groups of people at the dinner table. A great second lens, but not a great single all-purpose lens.

Any lens kit that mixes up 2 or 3 of the above lenses are still leaving you short of ONE GREAT all-purpose lens.

The best all-purpose lens out there is the 28-135mm zoom. 28mm is plenty wide-angle enough for anyone. And 135mm gives you enough zoom lens to shoot the kids soccer game close-up from across the entire field. With 10MP, you can still crop down for a nice close-up and get great high-quality prints. With this lens, you won't need a camera bag for 90% of you who are buying this camera for non-professional work.

Finally, avoid kits with lens correctors that screw into the end of your lens and give you more or less "magnification". These lenses are uniformly lousy.

Also, the "bonus" items in these kits, like the tripods and camera cases are cheap, cheap, cheap. Better to buy these components separately.

Last, there's a great product out there called "Camera Armor" I know they make it for the EOS 30D. As soon as its available for this camera, I would recommend it. It is a custom made rubber housing that fits like a glove over the camera's body. It does a nice job of keeping your camera from getting banged up or badly scratched.

  A Real Upgrade!!
Review created: 09/08/07(updated 11/18/07)

Just released in early September, 2007, Canon 40D is their 6th generation prosumer DSLR (D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 30D and now 40D) I personally think this 40D should have been the 30D. 30D wasn't that much of an upgrade from 20D. It was more of an enhancements than total upgrade. I'd like to call it 25D. I'm sure many of you agree and many photographers who owned 20D didn't bother to upgrade to 30D and either waited for next version or move to more robust 5D.

The Canon 40D is another matter. Canon has taken a major step forward and included many new features that live up to the new name. So let's see what's new.

(1) The 40D is 10MP camera while 20D & 30D were 8MP. 2MP isn't a big jump and I'd liked it to have 12MP - but that would be competing against their own 5D market, so I think they decided to put 10MP on there. Maybe 50D will have 12MP+.

(2) LCD on the back is now huge 3 inch screen and it's much brighter and easier to read in bright daylight. Big screen is definitely welcome!!

(3) NEW Dust removal system which weren't available in 20D/30D - and IT WORKS!! If you've often experienced dust spots on the images before, you'll love these new features.

(4) NEW faster image processor called DIGIC III used in 1D MK3 and 1Ds MK3. Thanks to the new processor, 40D can now kick out 6.5 frames per second and can buffer 75 image burst in 11.5 seconds. That's almost twice increase burst number than 30D. (75 burst is a lot for most of us. I do use burst shots as well, but they end up being less than 15 so 75 is quite a lot)

(5) 14-bit ADC vs 12-bit of 30D. New 14-bit will yield better color gradients and its quality especially on the shadow & highlight details.

(6) LIVE VIEW - I'm not sure how many pro photographers are going to be using this feature, but I think it's a trend these days to include it.

There are more new features that I haven't covered here, but the ones I mentioned here should give you a good idea of what to expect on 40D. Priced at around $1300 for the body-only version, I think it's a great prosumer camera. If you have Rebel XT/XTi and wish to upgrade to more robust, faster camera, this is it. If you own 20D, or 30D you can probably get around $600~$800 for your camera and it will be nice upgrade for around $500~$700.

Great camera! I really enjoy this camera.
Review created: 08/16/08

I searched reviews by professionals and first time buyers and everyone had good things to say about it. I really enjoy taking pictures with this camera and get really great pictures. I also bought a DVD that tells you how to use the camera and that helped me learn all of the functions of the camera within hours. I have had the camera for 3 weeks now and have some great photos. This is my DSLR. I own a Canon AE1 and have taken a lot of pictures with it over the years. The DSLR is so much better since you dont have to wait on film development. If you want a fairly professional camera that will take great pictures this is it. You have to be willing to get out there and experiment with it. It has point and shoot functions, but does so much more. I also own a Canon G3, which is digital. Its a good camera, but doesnt compare to the 40D.

Loaded with features, super upgrade from my old 350D, next step full frame, and not sure as I really need it. This camera does a super job, and some are faster but they all seem faster than I can shoot any ways.

I like my Canon EOS 40D camera because aside from taking good pictures, you can do so many variations with how you can make it appear, like making the background clear or blurry,or putting more light or less light into the picture. I rate this camera excellent.

  My first purchase on EBAY
Review created: 08/06/08

I'm glad I have this opportunity to write this review regarding my first purchaes on Ebay.

I bid on a digital camera, won the bid, paid my money,$1000.000, and proceded to get ripped off. The person never delivered the item to mn. They claim that they were not the person listing the item. Someone hacked into their ebay and paypall account. They sent me a tracking number for ups that shows an item that was delivered to them just day before.

Thanks Ebay for the great experience!!! and the 1K loss.

Gene

  What I concluded
Review created: 08/05/08

bonurak ( 2 )

Unfortunately I have not yet used this actual camera. However, I have been doing a few weeks of research comparing the Canon 40D and 450D. Yes it is great to get the extra 2.2mp in the 450D but I feel the 40D is definitely a more professional and valued camera. I ended up being that the 40D has better overall picture quality and better contrast. In addition, if you are a action/sports photography it can work 6.5 fps (frames per sec) vs. the 3.5fps from the 450D. Don't worry about pricing because Ebay can give you great deals on this camera! I know everyone has different opinions but this is what I have researched. I hope any future buyers will have a great time with this camera ;)

  Good service
Review created: 08/05/08

cori.rae ( 3 )

I received good service on the phone. Of course they tried to sell me other things but were never rude or too pushy. They answered all my questions.
I received my package in a timely manner and everything that was indicated in my purchased kit. They indicated that they had a back order on one item that was not in the package but sent it with in a few days later. The Canon 40D I purchased works very well so far, and that was all I cared about. The tri-pod that came with was very cheap and has already broken, but what do you expect when getting a good deal on the Camera, lenses, and accesories. I can't complain.

Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera and Time2Envy
Review created: 08/04/08

The Canon 40D digital camera is a step up from the Canon excellent line of Rebel digital SLR digital camera and although it uses the same lenses the 40D gives the photographer more control over the images created with it.

I have been using the Canon XTi for about two and a half years with several of Canon’s mid-priced lenses including their 23-135 mm ES Image Stabilized lens which has become my standard lens for almost any situation. My main photographic subjects are my two Labrador Retrievers who love to be photographed playing in and around the pool so the chance of getting the camera splashed is always a possibility. The 40D is better sealed then the Rebel series. As I use the RAW format the Rebel series is a bit slow for follow up shots and the 40D has proved much faster. The 40D will now mount the 23-135 mm lens and the XTi will mount a Canon 17-22 mm lens.

I am extremely please with both the Canon 40D as well as the service I received from Time2envy when I initially had a issue the camera, they came through and had a replacement in my hands in time for me to get out on a very important trip.

  Canon EOS 40D 10.1 Megapixel
Review created: 08/03/08

Professional photos on a budget. You might say $900-$1,000 is not a cheap camera. Well considering all the features and that the big dogs cost $3,000 - $12,000 just for the body, the 40D is great for the next up. And consider that you now have a camera that's compatible with the best interchangeable lenses in the world, you really can't beat this camera at this price.

  Canon EOS 40D 10.1 M camera
Review created: 08/02/08

I had a Canon EOS Rebel XT and loved it but this is even better. Takes fantastic pictures in all conditions. Fast response and easy downloads. I use this camera for digital reference and to create digital rendering from the modified image. Having a crisp and clear image is very important and this camera delivers. The Canon series lenses is a great addition especially the 50-mm portrait lens which delivers crisp image clarity out to the edge of the frame where a zoom has difficulty delivering. Thank you ebay for the contact.

  Canon EOS 40D w/Extras
Review created: 08/01/08
by:

For the the price the camera alone with the IS 28-135mm lens was a great deal. The Extras were OK, nothing really extraordinary, but not top-of-the line, rather, faily inexpensive. But had already bought a 40d from Newegg and paid more for it than this kit, so it was a Great deal. Shipping was quick, after the sale I have a contact at the seller that I can call for help or any other products that I may need. Very professional - so am very happy.

  Canon 40D - Exceeded expectations
Review created: 07/23/08
by:
ktmoser ( 2 )

I received a Canon 40D with lens and accessories for reasonable price after shopping locally at the big box stores. I ordered just before a big vacation to AK hoping to receive the camera in time for the trip. I was able to win the bid (essentially buy it now), the camera was delivered as promised by 9 July (3 business days from order). The camera was missing a tripod and the folks as Pxyxis delivered as promised (even called me on my cell while I was boarding for AK). In all, tremendous experience. In the event you are not 100% satisfied, if you give them a chance they will exceed your expectations with customer care.

  Canon EOS 40D Camera

This is my second one. The first one took a header into a waterfall last winter...... while around my neck.... When I took it to Canon to get checked out, it rained all over the teck's desk.... hense my new purchase.
I think this is definitly a superior camera to anything anywhere near it's price point. It s metering is wonderfully accurate, down to very low light situations like night shots of NYC from a tripod.
The focus is fast & accurate. It's 10 megapixel raw file is big enough for many of my clients. Noise is low, color fidelity is good.
All in all, a camera I've NEVER had a problem from... which is why I bought another one.

  Canon EOS 40D (Canon 28-135 IS & 75-300 lenes)

I do a lot of sports photography and the high-speed multi-shot option is fantastic. Puts my Canon 300D to shame. The ability to up the ISO rating to 3200 is a good help when I do some extremely low-light shots. The options available for picture processing (color saturation, contrast, etc.) allow you to have much more control of the final product over other cameras I've used. Since the 40D keeps the storage media as a CF card and the same battery as the EOS 300D/350D/etc. I don't have to invest in a whole set of new supplies. I just use what I've been using with my other EOS camera. The 40D has a surprisingly bright viewfinder. However, the only thing I had to really "get used to" is the operation of the menu navigation since you have to use both wheels (the option wheel on the back of the camera and the wheel on the front near the shutter release) in order to correctly navigate and select menu items. I;'m really looking forward to learning how to set up the personal menus so I can have my most frequesntly changed items quickly available.
