Canon EOS 30D - Perfect Choice for Motorsports & Action
Review created: 06/09/06

First let me say I am very hard on my digital cameras, using them almost exclusively for motorsports. What I need in a camera is one that can take fast movement and still “eat dirt”.

After being a dedicated Olympus user, by the way I still love Olympus, I made the move to Canon a few years back. The 30D is my third Canon. And like the previous Canon’s it gives me what I need. I do have my cameras professionally cleaned regularly and althought this is a new camera to me, it has already been in for a cleaning...but most people are not going to have extreme asphalt and dirt conditions...that my poor 30D has to endure.

The colors are crisp, it is possible to get movement without stopping the action and being I am not a professional photographer…it is nice when everyone thinks I am…thank you Canon!

So is it pricey? I don’t think so. Not for what you get. You can leave the camera on its preset mode, but what I like to do is play around with the manual settings while I am off in a corner waiting for cars to re-enter the track. What I can do with the manual settings is breathtaking. I have close ups of drivers in the driver compartment while going in access of 160+ mph. That is impressive. Better yet, I love the fact that what I center on is pretty much what the camera centers on.

And if you need to get several shots in quick order…such as a spinning car…this camera clicks away…no problem. I sometimes have professional photographers around me asking, “Did you get that?” It is pretty neat to be able to show them, that why, yes I did!

I do most of my photo editing for web in Adobe and rarely do I need to make any adjustments to the photos. The color and clarity is right on.

I personally use a battery grip, carry an extra battery and have a couple different lenses. But the battery lasts a long time...the reason I lug an extra is that I am away from electricity and my day of shooting often goes long into the night.

As with any camera the lens is also critical. I have a cheap lens and a medium priced lens, and although they are for different ranges, there is a difference in the quality of the shots. I would love to have one of the expensive image-stabilization lenses…but until then I am very happy with this camera…its photos beat a lot of the professionals and I like having nice photos. But I do dream about...what if I had one of those expensive lenses...

I have also taken a few shots in the yard of flowers and portrait shots inside, all are gorgeous…theylook like they should be in Sunset Magazine!

I hope this review was helpful, especially to those that are in need of a camera for sports/fast movement. I would highly recommend the Canon 30D.

  30D = Updated 20D
Review created: 06/29/06
73 of 80 people found this review helpful.

I wrote 20D reviews before and gave a Excellent rating. My friend bought 30D so I was able to borrow it for a few days and test it out to give this feedback. First of all, let me say that 30D feels like updated version of 20D. It adds many advancements to already head of its class, 20D. But would I upgrade 20D to 30D? Well, honestly, I wouldn't upgrade if I had 20D. 20D does close to what 30D does. In fact, they have the same 8.2 megapixel. 30D should have been called 20D Mark II and leave 30D for higher megapixel version. Having said that, is this a camera to buy if you had digital Rebel, XT or nothing at all? YES! With market price of $1300 for the body, it is an excellent camera for the money.

Some of the Pros of 30D

o Excellent resolution, very good per-pixel sharpness
o Good tonal and color response
o Trademark Canon CMOS noise free images,
o High detail even at high ISO and usable 1600 setting
o Confidence to use camera at high sensitivities (ISO 1600, 3200)
o Excellent long exposure capability for shooting night shot
o New Picture Styles make it easier to get 'ready to use' results
o Wide range of image parameter adjustment (-4 to +4 for most)
o Instant power on time, excellent operational speed
o Five frames per second continuous shooting
o Excellent buffering, fast CF throughput
o Good nine point auto focus system, works well even in low light
o Selectable color space (sRGB / Adobe RGB)
o Supports both EF and smaller, lighter EF-S 'digital' lenses
o Excellent build, very robust, good ergonomics
o Built as a Digital SLR from the ground up
o Proper RAW+JPEG with immediately selectable JPEG image size
o Quick magnification up to 10x (perfect for checking focus)
o Excellent battery life,
o Light weight and small batteries
o High pop-up flash, should make red-eye less of a problem
o E-TTL II flash metering, includes distance information from lens
o New large 2.5" LCD monitor (really large compare to 20D)
o Playback jump by 10, 100 images or by shot date
o USB 2.0 Hi-speed connectivity
o Orientation sensor
o Optional WFT-E1 wireless transmitter (802.11 b/g)
o Value for money

Conclusion -

If you own 20D, I'd wait for the next version or move up to 5D. If you own Rebel XT, 30D is a great candidate for an upgrade. If you are thinking to purchase digital SLR for the first time, 30D is a great choice for semi-pro photographer or back up to more advanced camera.

  A 20d and then some
Review created: 08/28/08

I needed a second camera so I would have a backup for my wedding photography business. I considered the extra money for a 40d, but went with a great deal on a 30d I found here.

All the reviews said that the 30d was just a 20d Mark II, and that may be true. But I've found the 30d much more pleasant to use. The bigger LCD, the enhanced image controls and the spot meter make it easier to use than the 20d.

I wouldn't pay full price for a 30d, but if you can find a deal on a used one (got mine, plus two 2gb CF cards and two batteries for $500), I'd say go for it.

30D review after a few weeks using it.
Review created: 08/18/08

I started with the EOS 33v film body and wanted to make the move to a digital SLR. I had my eye on the 20D series as it is still a great camera more robust then the new consumer bodies.

However, this 30D came up at nearly half the price of the new 40D yet had a true spot meter and much larger LCD than the 20D.

I was a little worried about battery life but I've been shooting shots since I got it and I'm still on the same initial charge.

This is one fast feature full camera - only downsides? cropped frame so good wide angles are expensive to come by and no weather sealing. To pay for either of these requires the EOS 5D so a much higher price.

All round very pleased.

So far I love it. I was going to get the 20d for price reasons but went with the 30d instead and I am very glad I did. The LCD screen is just wonderful. I can see my photographs very nicely so I know if everything was correct.

Love It!

Camera and lens are great however ...
Review created: 07/11/08

I love the camera and lens I bought. I decided on this seller because they had the best price along with the saftey I recieve from Ebay/Paypal. I didn't like having to call them before they would ship my items to upsell me on useless items I didn't need. I didn't go for all of them but did end up buying a few extra things (the guy is very convincing and I was un-preparred) and unfortunatley I didn't need those items at all ie: extra batteries. I've been using the same battery since I got the camera 2 months ago. That was a good wasted chunk of change. No one likes being upsold and I wish this seller would just state everything upfront.

The best camera I ever had. The IS system and the Ultrasounic machine are excellent!!! I have tried many regular cameras but the Canon 30D with 28-135mm lens are completely different. Canon 30D + Canon 28-135mm IS US = PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!!!
remember you pay for what you get. Canon is the most expensive in the market BUT FOR A REASON.

This is our second camera (one for me, one for spouse) and we love them. You won't find an easier camera to use. If you have any questions, there is a dvd that shows how to use each and every function on the camera with examples of photos, etc. Very nice addition.

The Canon 30D is a great camera, despite it being a gen or two behind the latests & greatests from Canon & Nikon, it still performs incredibly well & it is compatible with the latest EF\EF-s Canon Lenses.

If you want to save a few bucks, I highly recommend that you buy left over stock on a 30D & you'll save nearly 50% on the latest products. Even @ 8mp the camera shots are good for 11x14 & offers tons of detail.

I opted to buy from Barclay's Photo since they have new leftover Canon 30D's, but my shopping experience was not a good one. You have to call in to pay for your auction & when yo do, they will try to sell you warranties, extra items & faster shipping. They are very pushy & unpleasant to deal with, I was even called a bad consumer for not opting to buy $300 worth of upgrades. In turn, Barclay's Photo purposely held on to my camera for 4 days before shipping to ensure the slowest possible shipping service.

For more details with my experience with Barclay's photo please contact me, my ebay user name is Racerraul & you may send me any questions via ebay. I'll be more than glad to share in full detail my experience with Barclay's Photo.

I would also recommend that you carefully read Barclay's negatives comments because they are all for the same complaints... and I can asure you that if you don't buy their upgrades they will delay your shipping...

One last note... if you buy a Camera from Barclay's Photo & when you call it is not a USA product & it is not listed in the auction... report them to Ebay.

  30D worthy of serious consideration
Review created: 03/09/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There are many debates raging about 30D, 40D, 5D and so on. Ignore them. It's like arguing how many angels on the head of a pin.

The 30 has only a few shortcomings for the average shooter and those won't be noticed. What most amateurs need more than a 30MP camera is a great lens. Ignoring that component of your setup is a serious mistake. Don't wanna spend a fortune on L glass? Look at Sigma DG lenses at 2.8 or better. They turn out fantastic results every time.

The 30 has an excellent burst for capturing sports shots like your kid in football, baseball and so on. 5fps vs 6.5fps (40D). There is nothing you will miss with that extra 1.5fps. Nothing. Worried you won't get the shot? You will. 5fps is plenty of capture time.

You can read all about the technical crap elsewhere, I want to focus on real life applications. Again, lenses are king. However, in getting creative and making your shots count, the 30D is a worthy camera to get and save $400 in the process. Sure you don't have Live View. Do you absolutely need it? I've never used it and since I won't be straddling the floor shooting covers for Vogue with some half nekkid model on the floor, why even worry about it? Macro photography, Portraits, sports, landscapes, the 30D can handle it. Wanna dabble in B/W again...it does a decent job, although I find myself wanting to put on filters out of a basic setting mock to feel right about shooting that way.

Resolution on this camera is excellent. I just did a 4ft print from a head shot and it was stellar. SO if your only prints are max 8x10, you'll love the clarity. Again, your lenses will really determine how great your shots are not the camera. Even an old Elan 7 series can create fantastic shots on film given the right lenses.

Save the money from the 40D and get this. You'll never regret it. Most bids and even online sites should have this for around $800 or less with body only or a garbage kit lens.

I have been a Canon film photographer for 35 years and most recently used an EOS 3. I reluctantly began dabbling in digital photography less than two years ago, but never seriously. Finally I decided to get serious and attended a Canon digital photography workshop. I used a 30D at the workshop and was quite impressed. The combination of features, price and durability appealed to me. The camera is easy to use but provides the versatility and creative control I need for a wide variety of shooting situations. Although I own Speedlite flash units, I like the convenience of having a built-in pop-up flash for those times when I am not carrying all my gear. The larger, brighter LCD screen is a big advantage over the 20D. With the recent release of the 40D, now is great time to get a 30D for a bargain price.
