The best lense to start with for Canon Digital SLR

I'm writing this review because I'm tired of hearing self-named experts degrade something that wasn't made for them. You don't want to start with professional lenses any more than you would want to buy a race car to drive around town (though it would be fun). Professional lenses are made for specific things, which is why pros need so many of them (i.e. the soup lense, the salad lense, the butter lense, the appetizer lense, the pasta lense, you get the point). Professional NASCAR would laugh if you tried to enter a new Ford Mustang at Indy, but nobody laughs at the one in your driveway. Anyway, on with the review:

Two years ago I purchased the Digital Rebel to replace a combination of film SLR and digital point-and-shoot. My SLR was a Minolta, so when I decided to go with Canon my lenses became obsolete (Minolta just hasn't been keeping up). This was my first lense investment. Everyone, even professionals, still want photos of friends and family and that's just what this lense will do.
My next lense investment was based on my reasoning for going with SLR. I wanted to get closer to far away objects, so I started looking for telephoto.

If you are considering stepping up to digital SLR from point-and-shoot, there is little question that you should invest in this lense. This lense will allow you to take all of the photos that you were used to taking with your point-and-shoot, and it will auto-focus and zoom with similar efficiency.

You may read or hear complaints about image quality from this lense. The image quality with this lense is comparable or better than any of the high end point-and-shoot cameras and better than any of your generic alternatives.

The price is great. The professional lenses that everyone compares this lense to cost 10 times as much. If you have $500 to $1000 to blow on a lense, I recommend sending me the difference via PayPal and getting this one anyway. Hey Ebay, I was kidding!

  Hey - It's cheap.

So let's see. This lens comes with the body at a price well under 100 dollars. It has a nice 18-55 range - good for wide angle on one hand and a little distance on the other hand.

I will not compare this to any other lenses. I'm not going to say, oh, it's not as sharp as this, or blah blah, who cares? As another reviewer said, it's pretty much disposable, it's not a professional-grade lens, and it's CHEAP.

The autofocus is medium-fast and is dead on most of the time. It hunts in low light and backlit conditions, but this is expected. The front element rotates when focusing, so circular polarizers are an issue.

The lens has good (hence my rating: good) image quality, good sharpness, although there have been reports of quality control problems. I probably got a good copy. Other people have gotten copies that have not performed very well. The build is decent. It feels sturdier than what you paid for.

I like this lens as a walk-around lens just to have some fun with, although I have taken some serious pictures with it. I have made a 12x18 print of the following picture that I took with the 18-55 and it came out spectacular:

http://nd.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30105784&l=341c1

That's about it. Oh yeah, one more thing: I like its macro capabilities. It in fact does a good job with close-up shots. I found my best pictures came from this type of shooting. Here is an example:

http://nd.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=15715144&l=c047d

I would suggest, for those upgrading to DSLR from point and shoot, to go with this lens as the kit lens. It is worth it.

I love to take photos, and for different close up shots this is the perfect lens. Also, I live in Hawaii, and some people love see wide angle photos, which show a more dramatic scenery.
my profession is Interior Designer. For my before and after photos, this is absolutely the perfect lens.
I am really happy with it.

  Canon EF-S 18-55 f3.5
Review created: 06/11/08

This is the standard OEM Canon lens most often sold with the digital cameras. It's a good all-purpose lens, but not incredibly fast. It's great for close quarter outside shooting and the same inside providing you have good light.

Be cautious of switching this out to any other lens as a replacement for this as the 18 mm tends to give you a good croping point to start with. I have another lens that starts at 28 and it simply doesn't give me the same flexibility.

I need this item for my photography business. I do groups in churches--up to 70 people or more. This is a wide angle lens that will hopefully take care of smaller groups. The item description influenced my decision to buy it. The description was accurate.

  Basic standard lens

This is what is called a kit lens, a general purpose lens that covers a range of focal lenghts between wide and telephoto, but not very wide and not very tele. It is an average lens, just to start, or just for users that don't think in taking photography more seriously.

  Love it for indoor photography!!!
Review created: 03/10/08
by:

I wanted it mostly for indoor photography. Most of the time indoor photography can be in low lighting and objects such as pets or young kids that won't stand still. The Image Stabilizer really does help out in these situations. At some family gatherings you don't want to lug around a tripod all day long, thats where this lense does it's job.

  Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens
Review created: 03/04/08

this is good quality lens that offers clear pictures and a varied zoom, the automatic focus is a great addition for those quick shots where set up time is minimal, but this is only a standard lens but is still great for beginner and advanced users! This lens is a good addition to any cannon camera, your camera is only as good as your lens!

  18-55mm USM IS version
Review created: 02/17/08
by:

This is basically the kit lens, with IS, and better. Image quality has improved a fair amount, and is a real great buy. I have two problems though. Number one, it doesn't have a zoom lock, and two, the mount is plastic. Obviously I'm asking too much for the price I paid for this haha. Great value though, I would highly suggest this lens.

  Great lens for everyday use

Great lens for everyday use on any EOS camera. You will still need to purchase 58mm filters for UV, better clarity and to protect the lens. I haven't noticed an improvement in the quality of picture with the IS of the lens.

Good all-purpose Canon lens for SLR Digital Camera body
Review created: 08/07/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This lens is fairly lightweight and you can get wider-than-true shots when taking photos at 18mm. With its range to 55mm zoom, it is a perfect and ideal lens for entry level SLR amateurs for everyday usage. At 18mm, your f-stop is 3.5 which lets a lot of light in for criper, higher contrast images... especially for a cheaper $100 lens like this one. You will find that you will use this lens 90% of the time in normal day-to-day scenarios. I also have the standard 70-300mm lens which I use for telephoto purposes. These are a good match to give you a "full" set of lenses for the amateur Canon digital SLR user.

  Great Pictures

Colors come alive with Canon lenses. I also have a Sigma lens, but te canon just give the professional sharpness of a magazine cover. These lenses are for wide angle, and they will give you just that. For the money this is a great lens. Once you can handle it well, then I suggest going for something a little bit pricier. Just make sure you get it on E-Bay.

It was exactly what it was supposed to be, I bought it for my 10D Canon, It didn't fit. I gave it to my daughter that has a 20D, it takes very good pictures and she loves it. I am still looking for a wide angle lens for my 10D and like the 17-40mm L USM. (Still Shoping.)

This lens is ok to start out with if it came with your camera but you'll outgrow it very fast, the people that say its a good lens are crazy and the people that buy this lens used off ebay for anything over $50 are even more crazy. Theres better for the money do yourself a favor and don't buy this.
