  Good but not great

This is a pretty good lens. When it is a bright day outside with ample light this lens works amazingly. It's only when you start shooting in not-perfect conditions where this lens starts to be less-than-spectacular. I am in the process of looking for a new lens to upgrade from this one, but this is definitely a good starters lens and offers enough flexibility to shoot landscapes, macro, and portraits.

PROS:
- pretty good range. 35mm gives you decent wide angle and the 80mm is respectable when zooming in on close-range objects
- good image quality under good conditions
- fairly flexible

CONS:
- 33mm and 80mm are both good, but neither great
- good pictures can be hard to come by under less-than-perfect conditions
- relatively slow autofocus

Overall, this is a good beginner's lens. If you really want to start shooting great pictures you will need to invest in a better (albeit more expensive) one. But I bought this when I was starting out, and it has taken some pretty nice pictures for me, and it has remained sturdy and takes the same pictures now that it did when I first bought it. Hope this helps a little!

  For Macro Use
Review created: 11/06/06

I use this in combination with a reverse coupler and another 50mm f1.4 manual canon lens. The AF and zoom on the 35-80mm allow quick framing and focusing of the subject, while the f1.4 reversed lens allows ample light for maximum depth of field. I leave the set together as a dedicated macro.
Hope this helps someone interested in a low cost, quality combination.

It is a very good lense, durable and usable friendly. Its a typical Cannon product, everything works as advertised. I would reccomed this line of products to anyone interested in photography. It zooms well and macro works well for insects and flower shots, or anything small. Its a good addition to your camera eqiptment.

  A really good lens

I bought this lens on eBay, because I had already won a Canon EOS Rebel auction. I didn't bid very high on the camera body, because I didn't expect to win. When I won, I didn't have a lens to use on it so I went back to eBay and searched for lenses. I have used several Canons before and they have always proved to be good cameras with sharp lenses. When I received the lens, I put it on the camera and ran a test roll of film, using close-ups, scenics, low and high light. When I had the film developed, every photo was great. Focus (which seems fast to me) was excellent and the sharpness was great. I would be glad to recommend this lens to anyone looking for this zoom range.

  Good for the price

While the lens was all I expected, the seller did not provide either a front or rear cap for the lens. I had to buy these separately.

I bought this lens because I needed the cheapest lens possible for my camera. All in all it was a good deal and it works smoothly.

I don't know enough about these to really have much to say. This lens takes clear pictures that are nice for my Canon EOS 10D. Haven't had any problems with it.
