Put it this way - the only downside to this lens is the f/1.8 instead of 1.4 or faster (not that f/1.8 is slow!).

The lens does not suffer much from distortion on a 350D, but might on a 1.3x crop or FF camera. I have a feeling that this lens will find itself on the camera as my 'standard' lens.

This is a short review, but there is nothing bad about this lens at all! Focusing as fast and silent, and build quality seems very solid.

  Canon Must Have Lens
Review created: 05/23/08

I've had this lense since 94 or so. It's always been a treat to use. It's silent, sharp and just the right weight.

I've used it many times for wedding photos in places that appreciate the quiet operation. It doesn't distract from the main events and draw attention to the photographer.

The filter size is handy and easy to find filters for.

Did I mention it's sharp?

No reason to dislike this lense.

This is the perfect companion lense to the 50mm f1.4. and 100mm f2.0.

This lens work great as a low light walk around lens, or for close up action. I also use it for shooting full body portraits of of people. It is very sharp and focuses fast. It is also one of the smallest/lightest AF lenses I've seen. For the money it is hard to beat!

Purchased this lens for a friend in Paris, France. He owns a new Canon 5D Mark II and needed to upgrade to EF lens. The lens is very fast and workings perfectly with the newer model Canon Cameras.

  Another Great Prime!
Review created: 05/29/09

I am often frustrated by product reviews because I feel like there are always such conflicting reports...as in the case of this lens! I bought this lens used-like new and I absolutely love it! I have recently began switching over to prime lenses because of their amazing sharpness, color saturation, and clarity. This lens has not disappointed me...it performs as beautifully as my Nifty-Fifty and I love the 1.8 aperture. I would recommend this lens to anyone who is wanting the same image quality as the 50mm offers, but a wider angle!

  Fast Wide Angle Prime Lens
Review created: 05/03/09
by:

I'm using the 28mm F1.8 on a Canon 40D. As you may know the 40D is a crop frame sensor body, the 50mm F1.4 was forcing me to always step back from my subject and sometimes you can't go back any further. The 28mm F1.8 offers all the 50mm F1.4 offers but with a wide angle.

Also important to note the 28mm will focus very closely, much closer than the 50mm from my experience. No IS capability but at 28mm and say F2.0 images are sharper at a slower shutter speed due to the wide angle. Ultrasonic focusing is silent and FAST. Build quality is great, this is defiantly on the higher end of EF glass.

Summary: Looking for a wider angle prime for your crop frame sensor camera? This is the solution at a reasonable price.

It's a great wide-angled lens that can take very good low-lit photos. Sturdy a bit heavy for its weight, which is a good thing.

Canon 28mm f/1.8 EF USM Lens
Review created: 01/06/09
by:

I bought this lens to use as a "normal" lens on my crop factor Canon bodies (30d & 40d). I had the 50mm f/1.4 first and though it seems everyone else loves that lens, I often felt crippled by it. The 50mm did not have real USM focusing so it felt cheap, hunted and often refused to focus. Not so with the 28mm. The focusing on the 28mm is fast and precise. It still has a pretty narrow DOF wide open, so you gotta get your focus point correct, but when you do, its nice. I've read that it is slightly soft wide open, but I haven't noticed it in my amateur use. With the 50mm, I often found I couldn't back-up enough to get medium sized groups in the frame indoors. The 28mm is much better for this. Build quality is excellent. The lens is so light and small, it really makes a nice indoor walk around lens. I haven't tried the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, but I find it hard to believe it could offer anything this lens doesn't for less money. Also important to note is the fact that the Canon glass holds its value better. You'll be able to sell this lens for 80-85% of new price regardless of age if its in nice condition.

  wide open unacceptable
Review created: 12/28/08
by:

the only reason i tried the 1.8 over the cheaper 2.8 is the extra stops...

but the softness at 1.8 was unacceptable for me...images looked flat and monotonous...like point/shoot camera pics....

i'm gonna try the sigma despite quality control issues...

Very fast and accurate lens. Ideal for point and shoot purposes. Only thing that sucks is there is no zoom. focus is fast and the pictures come out very crisp and clear! highly recommended prime lens!

Great indoor low-light lens for a crop sensor camera

Opens up all sorts of possibilities when shooting indoors with no flash. The 50mm is too tight when shooting on a crop sensor camera such as my Canon 40D. The 28mm is ~ a 45mm equivalent on this camera, so works very well. The f1.8 maximum aperture allows you to get away without a flash in most (but not all) circumstances.

Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:::: Great for low light pics
Review created: 07/15/08
by:

I absolutely love my Canon 28mm 1.8. I use it more than any other lens. I have a 5d and it is a great wide angle lens for that full censor camera. I take lots of pictures in bars, restaurants and city pictures at night and this lens alows me to take those pics without a flash, in natural light. The 1.8 is super fast and when paired with a fast ISO like 1600, you can get a super fast shutter speed even in really low light. This lens is amazing and so much more versatile than the 50mm 1.4 . For the money, I don't know why I didn't get it sooner.

  Canon 28mm is great
Review created: 05/02/08
by:

great lens. I love the blurring effects. Feels compact. Quick and accurate autofocus. It is worth having to walk closer and further to compose, rather than zoom, for the 1.8 f-stop capabilities. Shooting with it on the 40d makes me a happy camper. On 1.6 digital sensors is close to 50mm actual distance. So nice standard, walk around, lens. No complaints.

  Great Lens!
Review created: 12/09/07
by:

I have only used this lens a few times since buying but I am very happy I did! When I first bought my 20D, I bought some cheap lens just to get into the learning process with different lenses. I soon saw the reason they were called cheapies. I bought the 28mm a few weeks ago and I could instantly see the difference in my shots. Granted, I have to do the moving instead of the lens but, maybe I can count that as exercise now. The lens is clear and take crisp photos, even in very low light.

The only thing I dont like about the lens is that, it can't change my 20D into a 5D. Enough said...

I think this would be a great lens for anyone's shooting family and group shots. I have found it works well with a project that I am doing with models wearing the state flags.

In closing, buy this, you wont regret you did! At All!
