For the money you will not find a better lens. I have several Canon L lens which are sharper than the 28-105 3.5-4.5 II but for the Dollar diff. this lens is great.

  Great all-around lens

I got a used one of these off eBay a year ago, and it is a really good lens. For the price, it was quite an upgrade over the lens included in the 350D kit.

Focusing is fast and pretty accurate, images are not 'Tack-sharp', but do turn out well, especially with a photoshop touch-up afterwords. If you need a middle of the road all-around lens, this one fits the bill nicely.

  Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 I

I take a lot of pictures at meetings and conferences with a Canon Rebel XT. My 18-55 lens was often not enough unless I walked up in the speaker's face. My 70-300 lens was too much magnification most of the time. The 28-105 works great for this purpose and should prove to be a good all around lens. The quality of this lens is also much better than the kit lenses.

  Great for digital two
Review created: 10/25/07

This lens was designed as an all-around lens by Canon back in the film era. Now that virtually everyone will use it on an APS-C sized digital sensor, some people say that it is obsoleted by the common "digital all-around" 18-55 zooms. I don't think this is true. Actually on a 1.5x digital body, this lens has a range that is similar to most "3x zoom" compact digitals, that is, starting at ~35mm to ~150mm. This is a very versatile range, covering wider-than-normal and going to comfortable long-distance close-ups.

Other than that, the lens is very well built and quite fast for its cheap price, keeping f/4.5 on the long end this is 1/2 stop faster than the more common f/5.6 found in kit lenses. Same for the short end. It is extremely sharp and has perfectly smooth and very fast USM focusing.

I would highly recommend this lens, especially used, as an initial replacement for a kit lens on a digital Canon body.

  Good performance at higher f-numbers

I have the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (macro, not flower) version of this lens. At small f-numbers (almost fully open), this lens is fairy soft, but still usable. Past f/5.6, this lens has great center sharpness, close to that shown by my primes but not quite there, while the corners are a tad bit poorer. This is a great lens for good weather, general picture taking, but in poorer light conditions or when quality is a must, I'd definately prefer a set of primes instead.

Great all around lens. The focus works well even in low light and is very quiet. Solid build quality. It's a great step up from a kit lens and would also be a great first lens as it would cover the wide angle and mild zoom as well.

This is "THE REAL THING", with the 7-Blade Aperture

Canon Product Code C21-9701
I bought the used Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Lens three weeks ago off e.bay. I read up the guide from eBay My World: profaudio1 which was my main factor for buying the lens. I quote profaudio1 says Be careful to get the correct lens an example of the lens is here (http://i13.ebayimg.com/06/s/08/97/e8/3b_2.JPG)
You must look at this lens carefully to be sure that the word "MACRO" is clearly visible in yellow lettering, preceding "0.5m/1.6 ft". This is the only outward indication that identifies it as the improved seven-blade diaphragm model. Watch out for the "flower" symbol here instead of the actual word "MACRO", just above the focus ring. The yellow flower icon was only used on the original version with the five blade aperture. The older model with the flower icon is a fine lens, but it does not quite have the same level of performance as the second version or the Japanese Mark II and it is more likely to exhibit "zoom creep", due to age and wear. The lens is perfect for my normal every day photo work

  Lens Seler I Will Avoid
Review created: 10/05/08

I was not happy with the fact that the seller took my money and went on vacation before sending the camera lens. I believe most buyers would like a quick turn-around period. We would like to get the item as quickly as the sellers always want their money. How would you like it if you went into a local dealer, saw the item under glass, paid for that item and then the store manager says come back in a week or so after I get back from vavcation and I will hand over the item? This seller could have done much better. Only good thing is the item was as advertized.

More zoom action than you think.

I own the Canon XTI & searched for a good while researching many lenses trying to find a mid range lens I could use daily w/out busting the bank or having to large a lens to carry about.
I almost purchased the 28-135mm lens when I came across this one. I researched the product off many sites & found a consistent rating of above average that the 28-135mm did not. The prices on the other sites for the 28-105mm was high & w/ good reason. The quality of this lens, even though it is an older lens, holds up to time.
For everyday use, it is perfect. I could have spent more for a larger lens but then would have been miserable lugging it just to take a snap shot. Even for sports & nature shots it is really effective, gets right up close.
If you are looking for a lens that captures the moments with clarity & closeness, you will be lucky to find this lens available without someone putting a high $ price tag on it. It is worth it.
I purchased mine from Mike375 off of Ebay & I spoke with him before purchasing. He mentioned that the difference between the two I was looking at was slight & once I got this lens I'd be real happy with it. I'm very very happy I decided to purchase.
Really after having worked with this lens, I can see the benefits that each professional review had noted.
Best of luck in your search but bottom line before you buy; know what you expect out of a lens before you purchase, even go to an electronic or camera store & feel them out first. The weight of the lens can make you unhappy & make you more unlikely to pull your camera out for a treasured shot. You might just reach for your $60 camera instead!
With my lens & camera, I am more than happy to take a picture again & again.
Thanks Mike.

Canon EF 28-105mm f:/3.5-4.5 II USM GreatlyOver looked

I was looking for a general all around lens without spending a lot of money. I wanted a 24-105 L f/4 but not enough funds. I bought the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 and fell in love with it. I think it is a great over looked lens because it doesn't have image stabilazion like the 28-135.It focuses very fast and you can shoot very well in low light. I think the pictures are sharp with good contrast. I would recommend this lens to any one who wants crisp, sharp photos without spending a thousand dollars. I have not found any problems with the photos through out the lens range.

  Quiet & Quick

I am new to using Canon products, I'm a Nikonian of about 13 years. Using this lens on a Canon EOS-3, I found autofocus to be quiet and quick. While I'm not sure if it's just my particular lens, I found the zoom ring to be on the stiff side. Compared to the 50mm f/1.8, focus was noticeable quicker, quieter and more accurate. I'd definitely recommend as an all-around lens.

Very Good Lens for the price. Very satisfied!!!
Review created: 10/05/09

I decided to buy this lens because of some good reviews about this lens. It is not a new or very recent lens; but because of my budget constrains I need to buy a lens to replace my kit 18-55. This one was a good choice and because of the good results I am getting with it I am looking forward now to buying a prime 50mm f/1.4 as well as Wide Angle 17-40 MM f/4 when po$$ible.

You can not go wrong with this lens for the price.

BO

Not what I hoped it would be
Review created: 04/15/09(updated 09/21/09)

I decided to purchase this lens after reading many reviews stating it was much better than 'kit' lenses, etc. I was looking for something with a range that was a bit more telephoto than other Canon crop sensor options like the 18-55 or 17-85, and lower cost. I found this lens fast to focus, light and small to carry, and convenient to use.

On the downside I just wasn't able to get sharp, high contrast photos with it. With my 17-55 f/2.8 lens I frequently get images that are crisp with amazing detail, even wide open. With the 28-105mm it never happens, even at f/8. It is in a different league price wise (cheaper) from lenses like the 24-105L, but its performance is lower too. Maybe I just got a bad copy that had seen some issues (I purchased it used). Another downside was a loose fitting lens hood. Never fell off, but didn't have the tight fit of other lenses I own. Finally, I found the lens to be a bit wobbly when extended.
