This is probably one of my favorite lens and gets used most of the time. This "L" lens is sharp and colors turn out wonderful. More rich color than non-L lens. Weight is surprisingly light considering it's got IS(Image Stablizer) mechanism. Speaking of IS, this works like a charm and f/4 isn't much of a problem at all and if you mate it with Canon digital EOS cameras such as Rebel XT, 30D, 5D, 1Ds, it produces some amazing shots. I've used 28-135mm IS, and EFS 17-85mm previously and can tell you that the shots are kind of soft. Maybe that's why they are only 1/3 of the price of 24-105mm lens. I recommend it to anyone who wants best image quality, well built, great range lens.

  Canon L-series glass always impresses
Review created: 05/08/08(updated 08/15/09)
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I currently own a Canon 5D and a 40D, and sold off a 20D that served me well. The 5D has a full 35mm frame sensor, while the 40D (and the 20D previous to it) use a smaller "APS-C" size sensor.

The Canon 24-105mm lens goes from 24 to 105 on the 5D body, and when it is mounted on the 40D body, it gives an equivalent focal length of 38 to 168 (multiply the real focal length by 1.6 to find out the equivalent focal length on a APS-C size sensor).

This EF 24-105mm IS L-series of the Canon lens has excellent image quality. It is capable of beautiful color, contrast and focus particularly when set to about f/8. The IS designation means the lens has image stabilization built into the lens, using optics to provide up to 3 f-stops of shake protection.

Ordinarily the rule of thumb regarding shutter speed; to get a decent shot-don't shoot at a speed lower than smallest focal length. For example, with a 50mm prime lens, don't shoot slower than 1/50 of a second. In low light and non-action sports situations, the image stabilization makes a huge difference.

Canon's L-series glass is awesome. Couple it with image stabilization, and you have a yourself a winner. Highly recommended.

In addition to the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM I have a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II prime lens, a Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, and a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM.

All of the L-series lenses in my collection have fantastic clarity and vibrancy the other lenses simply don't achieve.

Highly recommended for pro photographers.

Pricing is not for the faint-hearted.

DESIGNATIONS:

L = best Canon glass
IS = Image Stabilizer (up to 3 f stops)
USM = Ultra Silent Motor

Updated August 2009

I now own a Canon 5D Mark II and discovered that this lens was exhibiting a "flaring" problem. After contacting Canon Canada, they have agreed at no charge to examine the lens and repair or replace it to fix this defect. Canon acknowledges that some early versions of the lens indeed has this problem, and have offered any owner of one to repair or replace it if the flaring problem shows up badly.

In addition to the lens I mentioned above, I now also own two new prime non-L lens. I find both of them excellent quality. I bought an EF 50mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.8 and am happy to have them in my collection. I intend to write reviews for my other products as well.

Love the new lens. Very fast speed coupled with IS make this lens a must have. I wish Canon would make the same lens with F/2.8 . Under normal condition especially outdoors, this lens is sharp and accurate. The only reason I gave it a 4/5 is the less than perfect performance at night.

Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L Is it worth the price

Last year I rented a Canon 24-105mm f/4L lens to do a wedding shoot. Normally I would use my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (which by the way is a great lens)but decided to try the 24-105mm for its longer reach and quick and accurate focusing. OK so here's what I found.

This lens focuses much quicker than my Tamron, with little or no hunting. It's pretty much on par with my other L series lenses.

Image quality wide open (f/4.0) is softer than my 70-200 f/2.8L IS wide open (f/2.8). However add a stop and the image is much crisper. Add another 1/2 stop and it's awesome.

The nice thing about this lens is that it seems to be able to focus at just over a foot. That seriously beats my 70-200 and is great for some of the work I do. I was going to buy a macro lens but now that I have this lens I just got some extension tubes.

Great lens, wish it was faster (2.8) but its still worth buying.

Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM EF Lens
Review created: 04/02/08

The Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM EF Lens is a wonderful "all-around" lens. The pictures I have taken turn out very sharp and the lighting of the pictures is more "realistic" than other lenses I have used. I doubt I will be taking this lens off my camera unless I need an extreme wide angle or a longer telephoto. I love the informal portraites I have taken using this lens. Very clear and sharp. I actually had the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens at one time, but it was a little too bulky for the kind of pictures I was using it for. This lens is quite comfortable to use. I doubt I will ever need to replace it with a different model. I like the IS feature. That was actually the feature that I wanted the most after having used it on my Canon 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. There is a difference in the f/4 compared to the f/2.8, but I have found that the IM feature is like having an f/2.8 lens when it comes to low-light camera shake. I have not noticed it draining my batteries like the 70-300mm does. This lens is also very quiet. I have a very inexpensive off-brand "come-in-a-kit" lens that REALLY makes me appreciate the quality of this Canon lens. Very fast and accurate focusing while staying so quiet. If anyone is thinking about buying an all-around lens, this should be your first stop. It costs a little more than your run of the mill lens, but...you get what you pay for. I have learned that lesson the hard way!

Quality sharpness/ versatily for close or wide shots.

Zoom range handy for many needs (close or wide shots), bright clear and tack sharp focusing. Quality and exactness built in like a fine German car. (Just wish it was one more F stop brighter - but that's why they built in the image stabilization as a trade off for it costing $800.00 more probably.) Image stabilizer works like magic in slower speed situations. An easy lens to use for any caliber shooter. 10 for 10 in my book!

Good quality, solid build. I am using it for my 5D. Only disapointment so far is the soft corners at 24mm. Otherwise, somewhat worth the money.

  Canon 24-105mm L - solid performer
Review created: 04/07/09
by:
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a lens that could potentially hit 90% of my subject matter. I find my 17-55mm lens a bit wide for shots of family, and since I don't focus on landscape (and stitch if I want to go wide) the lack of a wide bottom end on a crop sensor camera was worth the addition of 50mm on the long end. On the other hand, carrying a 70-200 to be able to grap a few shots at 70mm or 100mm is a lot of extra kit when traveling light.

This lens is built solidly, and feels like the right weight on a 40D. Unlike models I've tried in stores the zoom ring was smooth. The closeup ability of this lens isn't macro, but close enough that I may consider leaving the macro lens at home unless I heading out for that purpose.

IS is a welcome feature, and one lacking on the 24-70mm alternative. For low light I tend to use bounced flash indoors, or need depth of field outdoors (read tripod or IS). Therefore the f/4 maximum aperture isn't a deal breaker for me. At 105mm the depth of field is similar to my 55mm at f/2.8. If I really want thin depth of field a fast prime is the way to go anyways on a crop sensor. This lens is a nice overlap with the 70-200 series of lenses. Enough overlap that you don't need to swap between them as much as with the 17-55mm.

Overall a nice lens on a crop sensor for my uses. Purchased with the understanding that things are headed full frame down the road...

  Canon 24-105

I am looking to upgrade collection to Canon L lenses whenever possible. In particular, I was not completely happy with the mid range lens which came with the camera. I was considering the Canon 24-70mm L or the 24-105mm L. Both have sterling reputations and top reviews. I was concerned about weight and size because this is mostly a walk-about lens. My decision was made for me when I found a great deal on a brand new 24-105mm lens on Ebay. I cannot be happier with the lens. I have several Canon L lenses and this one ranks near the top even among the prime lenses. It's quality was immediately obvious when I opened the box. Its size and weight are excellent and balances well on the camera. It is quiet, fast, and the image quality is excellent at all ranges and apertures. My kit lens in this same range often caused inconsistent exposure. I have taken a thousand or so pictures since it received the 24-105mm L lens. I don't recall any non-keepers even in bad lighting. I was blown away by the action shots I was able to capture at an indoor pool without flash. This is an amazing lens and it now stays on my camera most of the time. The purchase price for this lens is more than double the alternative in the same range but well worth every penny. If you are serious about getting into DSLR photography, I would highly recommend this lens as the starter lens if you can afford it. There is no comparison between this lens and the kit lenses which are sold with new camera bodies.

Clear, Crisp, Impeccable and Amazing Images!!!

I am shooting with Canon EOS 5D, and previously have owned Canon EF 24-105mm L lens, but this particular one is stunning. I wish I could show you a picture of a cat I took resently (on Max Res). The subject was 7ft - 8ft away from the camera. Daylight, App 4.0 speed 1/100; ISO 200. When I downloaded the image on my computer and start viewing it... Geez, the details with every step of the magnification where the same. When zoomed to 100%, I could see the pattern of the iris of the cat's eyes.
I am sure that not all lenses of the same model are adjusted with such a precision, but mine is just a dream. I love it!

Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM EF Lens

There's not much bad you can say about this lens. Range is quite useable. Image quality is top knotch as you would expect from a L series lens. It's not to heavy to carry around all day. The image stabalization is wonderful and does gain you 3 stops as stated in the specs. Since it is a f/4 lens I find it easier to manual focus in very low light situations. Something thats not in the specs is that it can take extreme closeups. You don't get a 1:1 ratio like a true macro lens would. The sharpness of this lens allows you to enlarge the subject of your shot with no noticable degradation.
This lens is on the expensive side but well worth the money.

  Amazing Canon L lens
Review created: 09/05/07

This is a fantastic lens. I had the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, and it was a very nice lens, but I really wanted the IS and the extra length to 105mm. I shoot mainly portraiture so the IS, 105 and sharp L glass was a must for me. I only use my 20D and this lens for paid portrait sessions so I can't comment on using it as a carry around lens. For travel and fun photography I still carry my old G2. I'd swear that camera has the same great glass as L lenses.
The f4, rather than f2.8, doesn't bother me for portraiture. IS and 105mm rule!

Mated with the 5D Mark II you get fantastic, (which is an understatement) pictures every single time, The image stabilization works great adjusting itself quickly and quietly.

It's a bit heavy but compensate by capturing very clean images.

Buy this lens, you will not be disappointed at all.

I could not say enough about the IQ comparing to the several lens I have gone
through before making the decision to buy the 24-105mm l lense. In a nutshell
the lens is outstanding for clarity, color, detail sharpness, handling and
overall shootability in most of my photography venture's.The only change I would like to see canon do is extend the 105mm portion to another 100mm this
would be excellent coverage for most all shooting situation's.A very good lens
this is my second [l] lens, have 100-400mm l and saving for #three. This is a good walkabout lens and is just a little sharper than my 18-200mm canon [is]
which I continually swap around depending on the distance I need to cover.
I would recomend this lens for any one wanting great picture's.

I was worried that the lens was going to be too heavy for an amateur photographer. I mostly take pictures of my family. It isn't too big and looks awesome. My only complaint is now with my camera, a Rebel XTi. I need a new camera to match this amazing lens.

LOVE IT! I did some homework (Google rocks!) on an all around lens Canon photographers recommended for wedding photography. It sounded like the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM was the way to go. The image stabilization (IS) makes this the equivalent of having a 1.8 lens and the zoom (after the 1.6 conversion on my 20D) goes all the way out to 168mm which is great when you need to get in close on the bride and groom while they read their vows or put the rings on each other. I've used the lens for two weddings and it's now my everyday carry around lens as well. It's not as wide as I need at times but at 24mm (38.4mm converted) it's not bad at all. If you're considering this lens, go for it, you'll be happy you did.

Nice all around lens. Sharp focus. Nice wide angle plus telephoto. The only thing that I would want differant is f/1.4 or f/2.8. It's the lens that is on my Canon 1D mark ll most of the time. Can't go wrong !!! It's good for weddings, field trips, or shooting around home.

Great choice for a normal zoom.
Review created: 04/16/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Cons: None I've found.
Pros: I've only used this on small sensor cameras. D60, 20D, and XTi. The focus speed seems to depend on the camera. It was fast on the D60, faster on the 20D, and super on the XTi. Excellent color and contrast at all F stops. Sharp as a L lens should be. The zoom is easy to turn and stays where you put it when pointed up or down. I normally shoot with extreme lenses long, short, macro, or bellows. But you always need something in the normal range for events like parties, weddings, etc. I'm retired now but this would be a great wedding or event lens for a pro. Lighter than 2 Hasselblads and 4 backs like the old days.

This is my first "L" lens. I was looking for an all around lens to be my main use lens. The pictures that I take with this lens are beautiful. It has almost silent focus and is tact sharp. The only thing I wish were different is the 'f' stop. I wish this lens were a little faster in low light situations. The lens I received from my E-Bay purchase was in excellent condition. I could not be more happy. If you are looking for a good all-a-round, image stabilized, high quality lens, I suggest this lens near the top of your list.

This was the lens I was looking for. It's simply the perfect walk-around lens for a serious DSLR user. The image quality is tack sharp, the focal range covers easily 95% of the range most photographers will need, the f4 aperture offers excellent flexibility and the auto-focusing is silent and flawless. On top of all that, the image stabilization option significantly expands the boundaries and quality of images taken at slower and/of longer focal lengths. No other lens comes close to the quality and versatility of the Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS!!!

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens has a good starting range. Buying it used on ebay is a good way of getting this lens at a price that I could afford.
