Nice Lens for the money

Old school EOS lens
Noisy focus motor by USM standards, optics are very good for the money.
Produces very sharp results with nice color saturation and contrast.
The soft focus effect is somewhat usefull but could become cliche' if overused.
A nice effect for weddings, portraiture and some landscape shots.
Sure the construction isnt at L standards, the performace certainly isnt 1/4th that of an L lens, more like 9/10ths
For around $265 new, its hard to beat a prime f2.8 lens.

open at the 2.8 f-stop and the result has been beautiful portraits that really
project out in almost a 3 dimensional effect from blurred natural backgrounds. I am very impressed and delighted with the results. I was also very interested in trying out the soft focus feature. With the lens fully open, best results seem to come with a setting of about 1/3 of a unit on a scale of 2. (A little bit goes a long way.) I think that some back-lighting may be helpful in achieving a "dreamy" effect, but I have not yet experimented with that yet. So far, I prefer using it as a standard 135mm portrait lens with sharply focused subjects and without selecting the soft focus effect. It provides a bright view through the lens. I am using it with Canon 5D and 5D Mark II bodies. Very good value.
