I've used a wide variety of professional equipment including 4 x 5 cameras. I've had the pleasure of working with some of the finest camera equipment. This particular lens is one of my all time favorites. I've taken thousands of pictures with it and find it to be extremely sharp. Before I bought this lens, I read technical reviews that were later confirmed by my use of this sweetie. The Canon USM 100 Macro is critically sharp from f 5.6 on up. It is very acceptably sharp wide open at F 2.8. The color balance and handling or blurring of backround when close focused is fantastic. I have owened and extensively used 4 marcro lenses and this one is head and shoulders above the other macros I've owned. It really showes on prints larger than 13 x 19 where shots taken with this lens remain critically sharp to the most critical eye. If you do macro photography you won't find a sharper, better made lens. Canon's MR 14 Ringlight Flash coupled with this lens are together the best flash / lens combinations available. I would highly recommend this lens to professionals or anyone who likes the best when it comes to optics. Review ID: 10000000000119661 Was this review helpful? The old EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens had a superb reputation but Canon managed to keep up the performance of the USM successor despite of the introduction of a true IF design allowing to keep a constant lens length throughout the focus range. Mechanically this is a drastic improvement due to the absence of any moving outer parts that could suck in dust or wear out more easily. On top of that the USM implementation in this lens is excellent - compared to conventional macro lenses in this range it is a speed daemon here and a near silent one. Optically the lens resides on a very high level reaching out to the limits of the EOS 350D sensor. HIGHLY recommended! Review ID: 10000000001026126 Was this review helpful? This was my first macro lens, f/2.8 is a large aperture which allows fast shutter speed at a lower ISO. 100mm is perfect for macro shots, but also suitable for portraits which is great. Very sharp lens! Its equiped with a USM motor, which is useless. It hunts all around to search for a focus point, your better off using the manual focus. You can use creative filters to add the extra touch to your photos as well, it is a 58mm diameter lens. Its very well built, it should be a L seriers lens but only without the red tape around the lens. It has a special Felt like L series lens have, it is dust and moisture resistant. Its a lifesize lens 1:1 ratio but can be changed to 1:# and so on. The closer you get to your subject, the DOF (Depth of field) gets very narrow. A lens hood is recommended, ET-67. This will block glare when it hits your lens and also it protects it. The lens does not rotate when you focus, its has internal focus mechanism, so you can use the Cir-Pol filter if desired without disturbing the focus. Over all this is a wonderful lens, if you want a little more working distance and have extra cash, the 180mm f/3.5 L series is out there but for 2x the price. I have a 50mm f/1.4 prime as well. These 2 lenses make up the dynamic duo. This is a must-have lens for your Canon DSLR. Review ID: 10000000008017455 Was this review helpful? Report this review One of Canon's best lens for the money. Images are sharp with high detail making it an excellent value Macro lens. To do better you will have to move up to an L lens at 3x the price. Review ID: 10000000006640647 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
