When I first bought this lense I was amazed. Super fast, silent focus and great contrast and very sharp.
The focal length is just the right one for portraits with 35mm cameras. It eliminates the distortion of the 85mm and doesn't compress the image too much like a 135mm lense does. It's optics hold up very well with the Canon close up filters. They work together like they're designed for each other.
I've had mine for over 15 years and it's not given me one bit of trouble. With a little care these lenses wear very well. Mine still looks like it did the day I took it out of the box.
If you're wondering which prime to get first this is one I would recommend after the 50mm f1.4 USM.
For those quiet places that need the stealth approach this is one lense that should be in your lense arsenal.

This lens is amazingly fast. The USM is incredible and the DOF offers an enormous variety of options. Highly recommend for portrait use.

This is another Canon sleeper lens. What do I mean by that? I mean for not being "L" glass, this is great and tact sharp glass. I had several of Canon's prime lenses, including the 200mm f/2.8L, and this one was every bit as good. Okay, the construction may not have been, but for the price it is a steal and you should seriously consider adding it to your camera bag if you 100mm length out of a prime lens.

This is an excelent lens! It gives you tack sharp pictures from f/2.8 down. The 2.0 aperture is extremely helpful on low light situations and would produce great pictures too. Obviously I would use it to get closer to things that are better left undisturbed but although it's 100mm it is my main portrait lens (head shots). It gives you great detail on the subject's face. The lens' auto focus is fascinatingly fast. And for the price it's a must have for any "prime lens" photographer. I am surprised that Canon did not put a red stripe around it's barell. JL

I think it's good this lens is not an "L" one. Guess why? because it makes it much less expensive! :)
Despite it's modest price this one performs extremely well. Superb sharpness, narrow DOF with incrediblt pleasing bokeh, wonderful colors, compact, lightweight, very fast focusing! Not enought? OK, it's FAST! Only f/2.0!

) If you want to take amazing portraits in any light and take indoor photos of fast moving object or people, this is the lense for you!
Yes you will not have the convenience of zooming in and out. You will actually have to use your feet and move back and forth. However you will never be disappointed at the results
