    Introduction
    The Canon AE-1 was first introduced in the late 1970s, when I bought my first one. It is part of the A-series of cameras that had the basic bodies of the camera looking the same and only differed in level of features. This included the A-1, the one with the most features, down to the AT-1, the one with the least (manual mode, match needle metering as in the older "brick" model cameras put out by Canon such as the FTb, FT, TL, and TLb.) For today's photography students, the AE-1 is a very popular camera as it has all the features that one needs plus the shutter priority mode for snapshots. Even if you are not a photography student, a brief photography book explaining how to use the manual functions of this camera will substantially improve your photographs. Once these techniques are learned, "automatic photography" becomes a lot less attractive. I seldom have any camera (even my digital point and shoot that I use to create my ebay ads) on auto exposure.
    Detailed Description
    I love the AE-1 for the following reasons:
    * It is simple to use with the knobs, buttons and handles in the right places;
    * reliable, mine has given me nearly 30 years of excellent service;
    * changing lenses is straightforward and quick,
    * there is a huge selections of lenses, flashes and accessories (available at bargain prices on ebay).

    Technical details:
    Produced from 1976 to 1984
    manual and shutter priority modes
    2 to 1/1000th sec shutter speeds
    590 grams, 87mm x 141mm x 48mm.
    Manual focus lenses" Breech lock or bayonette FD mount (does not use EF Lenses)
    Accessories include Winder A at 2fps; Databack A; Electronic Flashes: Speedlite 155A with guide number 56 ft at ASA 100 and Speedlite 177A with guide number 83 ft at ASA 100.
    Takes a 6V 4LR44 or PX-28 battery.
    Summary
    This is a very nice little camera and one of the best bargains around. There were millions sold and there are still many in excellent condition, as well as a huge selection of lenses and accessories, also in excellent condition, still available for them. You will be happy with one of these little gems. Read more...

      A great camera but ask questions.

    These are fantastic cameras... easy to use and they deliver incredible results... but first, understand this is a manual focus FILM camera... not a digital camera. There is no auto-focus... you have to focus. And you can not hook this camera up to your computer and download pictures. It uses film which must be developed. If you are still interested in this type of camera... keep reading for some helpful advise.

    1: SEALS: The light seals keep light from sneaking into the film chamber. Even if a camera has never been used, these seals deteriorate over time and need to be replaced. Always ask the condition of the light seals. If they are worn out they will be sticky to the touch and leave residue on the film chamber door.

    2: BATTERY DOOR: These cameras have a little door that covers the battery compartment. Because people rarely use the hot-shoe cover to open the battery door properly, they often break the door. Be sure to ask about the condition of the battery door.

    3: SQUEAK: Watch out for the Squeak! When the internals begin the dry out and gears begin to show signs of wear the Canon A series has a tendency to make a squeak sound when firing the shutter. It sometimes sounds as if the camera is coughing. This is a sign the camera needs service. Without service the internals will wear even more and will soon fail.

    4: VIEW FINDER:
    Ask if the viewfinder is clear and free of scratches. While this would not affect picture quality it is kind of annoying to see specs of dust and scratches while trying to compose your shot.

    A good seller should provide photos and descriptions to answer these questions, but some people do not have the time or expertise so often times you need to ask. Their answers will tell you a lot about not only the camera… but also the seller.

    I bought 3 canons AE1
    AE1 and AE1 program
    Very affordable on eBay, do not hesitate to ask for details
    Is the lens clean , prism, the view finder, how many owners etc...
    It is a very good film camera, ideal for students or others
    With a speed range of 2 to 1/1000th second plus Bulb and flash X-sync of 1/60th second.
    A classic and top amateur SLR model
    A good vintage to have and to keep
