  Good lens with some shortcomings

Pros:
Telephoto range
4x zoom ratio
Lightweight
Cost

Cons:
Very slow focus
Hard bokeh (depth of field blur)
Rotating front element
Minimum focus distance

This is the least expensive telephoto zoom that Canon makes. For an entry-level telephoto lens it’s not bad, but you may want to consider the other lenses that Canon offers in this focal length range: (street price for new lenses)
EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III - $150.00
EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM - $180.00
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - $ 550.00
EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM - $ 1,100.00
The main problem with this lens is the very slow focus system. If you’re used to a DC focus motor on a smaller lens, you will still notice how slow this lens focuses comparatively. If you’re used to an Ultrasonic Motor, this lens is probably not for you. This somewhat limits this lens’s ability to be used in action situations, but for wildlife you probably won’t mind. If you have the aperture stopped down, the background blur (bokeh) is unappealing. The long focal length inherently has a lot of shake, so this lens needs good lighting to keep shutter speeds up, Image Stabilization would of course help. The good news is that the USM version (with the same optics) is only $30 more, well worth it in my mind. If you are serous about using this for sports or low light conditions , you should really consider the 70-300mm IS USM. If you have some serious cash to invest, the Diffractive Optics version is a pro-grade lens.

Bottom line: Yes, it’s the most affordable, but a novice shooter will outgrow its features quickly. There is very little reason not to get the USM version instead, and the only downside to the IS version is cost.

Good Lens For Those On A Budget
Review created: 10/14/06
by:
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

PROS
1. Cost (can normally be purchased for under $200)
2. Zoom Range
3. Lightweight

CONS
1. Slow To Focus (as compared to USM)
2. Front Element Rotates

While not the greatest this lens is capable of produces really good photos. This is Canon's lowest priced lens in this zoom range, so expect to give up some of the luxuries with it. My biggest complaint is that is is slow to focus, but then again I normal have one of Canon's USM lenses on my camera (the 28-135mm IS).

When used outside in good light this lens works very well. However, when used inside, or in low light, the images aren't as sharp and clear, due to lens shake (this is where the IS version has the advantage, or if used with a tripod). As long as you are using a faster shutter speed the photos taken with this lens will be fine. If you are going to be using it to shoot birds or wildlife with then this lens isn't a bad choice, and the price can't be beat, but don't plan on using it for shooting portraits.

For the difference in the price I would look at the USM version, though, due to the faster focus. And, if your budget supports it I would recommend the IS version of this lens, as I am sure that would greatly enhanced the photos (as it will compensate for lens shake), especially if you are going to be using it in any low light situations.

I personally do not use this focal length that often, and when I do I use it outside when it is well lighted, so the other features aren't that important to me. Although I wish I had spent the extra and gotten at least the USM version. I can say that if I used it more often then I do now (I have had this lens for about 4 months now, and think I have only used it twice) I would get the IS version.

  Budget canon lens

Purchased this canon lens as an entry level telephoto zoom, to capture this seasons San Diego Chargers action. Love the ease of use from the distance of the playing field during sunny games. Night games produce a less average picture, thats where a more expensive lens comes handy. Rate it as a good purchase with the pictures I take.

  Low Cost, Good Range
Review created: 11/06/06

Good intro lens, slow focus. I shoot wildlife and often have minimal lighting in heavily forested areas. Unfortunately this is the weakness of this lens.
However, when there is ample light, it takes some great pictures. The rotating front element is only a problem when using a polarizing filter that needs constant adjustment. In wooded areas I usually use manual focus anyway because of the potential for interference, so the slow focus is not a big issue for me.

I first liked the fact that the seller had a great feedback number. The lens is one I had been looking for and the price was very good. You could not find that lens for the price she was charging anywhere else NEW.

Great person to do business with and I would look at their stuff again for sure.

Great Canon Zoom Lens for the Price!!!
Review created: 11/12/07
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this lens (used) for only $104.00. That's an
outstanding price! This lens was in new/mint condition. I bought this lens to replace my 80-200
zoom for I wanted greater range. Many reviews state that at the high-end
this lens isn't quality. I beg to differ. I've taken many photos at
the 300mm setting (hand held) and seen crisp, clear and amazing results.
For the price, it's an outstanding lens. The build quality is greater
than my former 80-200mm because it seems more solid and has a metel
mount.
I give it a 4 out of 5 for sure. It's not the USM so it's slower to
focus. But I own other USM lenses and I can't tell a major difference.
That's why I opted to try this lens out. She's a keeper....

  Canon 75-300 EF III Lens
Review created: 05/02/07

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

First of all want to say I'm strictly an amateur who likes to keep it simple and has/had just moved up from a (high-end) Kodak P850 point-and-shoot to a Canon DLSR - So my comments are those of a more casual user than most review writers --

Reason I bought - I wanted Zoom Lens (that I could afford)to augment my Canon DSLR XTi issued 18-55mm S-Lens - This 75-300 Lens fit the bill exactly - I intended to use it primarily for general outdoor photography, however found it performs much better than anticipated in indoor no-flash pictures, such as inside a church (still would like to have a f-1.4 or f-2.8 for indoor, but $$$ ---) The optics are excellent and the ultrasonic focus drive is much (noticeably) quicker than DC drive - Great for quick shot focus - Strongly recommend paying the few extra $$ to get it --

The only thing is that this particular lens is a bit bulky (long) - Have to be very careful when carrying camera and its installed - Wish it was more compact -
I've adjusted and become accustomed to the size and I use it all the time -

  Lense
Review created: 03/06/07

The lense is in good condition, I don't feel the seller described it entirely accurate. The zoom barrel is loose and while it doesn't affect the lense as far as I can tell it would have been nice to know that. There were other lenses for sale at the time that were listed as new and about the same price that I would have bought instead. Other than that I'm satisfied with the lense.

This lens is the first lens that I bought to go with my canon rebel xs. The zoom on the lens is amazing. I took it with me to the zoo and took wonderful pictures even with the individual exhibits being so far away. Its an excellent lens that I recommended to everyone.

  Not bad for the money.
Review created: 09/03/09

I am not a proffessional photographer and find the higher end lenses are out of my price range. That said, this lens was in my price range and i am very pleased with all of the photos I otherwise would have missed without this lens. I can be on the otherside of my backyard and still fill the frame with my son's face, it's great. The only downside I've found is that it does not have image stabilization, so at full zoom the subject is shakey, but that still didn't affect most of my pics. So in the end if you can afford the IS model great, if not the is a good alternative.

Decent lens if you get it on sale
Review created: 07/20/09

The lens has functioned as you would expect. The zoom is phenomenal, the focus is relatively quick and the picture quality is moderate. The only ding I'd give this lens is that although the focus is relatively quick it can sometimes be a bit delayed in lower light situations.

This is an excellent piece of glass. Bought this to take sports pix for track and field events,, and general use. Despite no image stabilization, takes excellent clear shots at max zoom, with clear edge-to-edge pictures. Looked at different types of telephoto lenses but many are too expensive. Great lens for the amount I got it for at ebay!

Review created: 10/07/08

It is light weight and gives me the reach that I was looking for. It was cost effective and performs like a champ. I have an older Canon 20D that I needed a lens for and so I was able to get this lens at a great cost to be able to photograph subjects from a distance.
