Sweets to the Sweet Scariest Movie I've Ever Seen!

I do not hold very high hopes for horror movies anymore. I love the slasher movies from the 70's & 80's and it seems like the newer slasher/horror movies just want to shock - not scare you.
While Candyman wants to capture the newer "shock me" generation it also has an undercurrent of good old fashioned creepy, scary horror that I LOVE.
A student doing a thesis on urban legends decides to focus on the legend of The Candyman. Supposedly HE - I refuse to type his name again, I was that freaked out! - was a black man brutally tortured and murdered for falling in love with a white woman. Now he appears if you say his name 5 times in front of a mirror. He has a hook and is not afraid to use it.
Superbly acted by Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd. Tony Todd is menacing but charming - when he says "Be my victim" you think "ok!", then you see his real face and you go "uh-oh".
The special effect and make up are great. Gory without trying too hard - which usually makes things look like make-up - the creepiness and terror comes from the atmosphere. The stark lighting of Winter in Chicago, the dark caverns of abandoned rooms in the projects, the bright isolation of new construction apartments. Coupled with the music and the smart script make this movie one of the best horror movies I've ever seen - and I've seen a fair share of them!
Super creepy and scary, highly recommended. I also highly recommend not watching this one alone - I did and that was a mistake, too good to turn it off but too scary to be comfortable in my own house!
