2009 Gem BU Lincoln Cent
The penny is a 2009 Gem BU Lincoln Cent from the U.S. mint and Second in the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Program, Formative Years set. This is the first redesign of the Lincoln penny since 1959 and was released on 31 May 2009. The reverse, designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers, depicts a young Lincoln reading while taking a break from working as a rail splitter in Indiana. The inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE CENT. The one-cent coins produced at the United States Mint at Philadelphia do not have a mint mark. The coins produced at the United States Mint at Denver display the “D” mint mark.
