I personally love this Christmas movie, starring Mickey Rooney, because back in the 80's when it came out on TV, my oldest daughter fell in love with it and I had recorded it, so it became one of the movies that we watched together over the years. Of course, she got older and it didn't have quite the same nostalgia for her as it did for me, but over the years I have continued to watch it on my, getting worn out, copy. It's a story about a boy who lives in California, who's grandfather, that lives with the boys family, promises to take him to Ney York so that he can experience Christmas and all the excitement that you can only find in the Big Apple at that time of year.

Unfortunatly the grandfather dies, but makes a deal with an angel to come back and find New York's Christmas angel, who is missing and because of that Christmas in New York isn't near what it used to be in the past. So grandpa gets to come back, uses his opportunity to take his grandson to New York. They go to New York, find the Christmas angel, who is very down because every year, trying to get folks in New York into the Christmas spirit gets harder and harder to the point that he has given up. But Mickey Rooney and his grandson save the day and all is right in New York at Christmas again.
I'll admit, it's a corny movie, but I really enjoy it. It's not going to be one of those Christmas movies that go down as one that will be played endlessly by the networks until you know every line word by word, but it is an enjoyable movie just the same. One that I would recommend. I give it 4 out of 5 stars, but you have to remember, this one has a lot of nostalgia for me.

This is one of those movies you will want to watch every Christmas season. It's about a grandfather who wants to show his grandson how great it is to be in New York at Christmas but dies before he can do it. He is given a second chance to live long enough to do just that, but this year there seems to be no Christmas spirit in New York. He sets out to find the spirit again. Micky Rooney gives a great performance as the main actor. My only complaint is this is on a VHS. I don't think it was ever made into a DVD. I seen this movie on TV years ago and loved it. The TV stations never seem to show it anymore at Christmas, so I just had to buy it.

Truly a classic; highly recommend. The film communicates core family values. It will make a great 'family evening' viewing. It will cause the viewer to evaluate the impact his/her life is having on others, and whether they are or are not adding value to lives around them.

  A Childhood Classic
Review created: 05/05/08

This was a great movie from my childhood that my father dubbed to VHS sometime in the 1980s. I've watched it every year at Christmas time for as long as I can remember. Somehow I lost my copy and while the new copy doesn't have my beloved 80s Gap and Foldger's Coffee commercials in between, it is still a treasure.

Mickey Rooney, who today looks the same age as he did in the film some 20 years ago, is a grandfather looking for a second chance to teach is grandson the meaning of Christmas. The movie begins and ends with his death. He convinces the Archangel to send him on a mission to find a lost angel who usually brings Christmas spirit to New York City. Through the drama and craziness comes a very heartwarming story.

It is not available on DVD and I can only assume will never be released as it's not a well-known movie. So if you want a DVD you will have to digitize it yourself.

A must see for all you 80s kids, it even stars Annie Potts (Ghostbusters, Designing Women, etc etc etc)!

My mom wanted this movie so much. So I looked on ebay and found it. I was so happy. It's one of my moms most favorite movies so I had to find it and buy it for her. It came in great condition which is great for being an older movie.
