Recorded at Emerald Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Canadian cowboy Paul Brandt is a young man with a big voice. On his debut album, Brandt, who grew up in ranch country in Calgary, showcases a deep, rich baritone that bespeaks a depth of experience far beyond his 23 years. His subtle, affecting delivery of the album's opening cut, "My Heart Has A History," is reminiscent of Nashville monarch Randy Travis. While Brandt keeps one foot firmly planted in country tradition, his music has a modern edge. "12 Step Recovery" is a bouncy, upbeat number with a witty, ironic lyric. He also has a way with a ballad, as he shows on "I Meant To Do That" and "On The Inside," with their full orchestration and contemplative mood. Brandt's voice is never better served than when he lets it linger over the lyrics of slow, tender compositions like those.
