Album Notes Personnel: Edith Frost, David Grubbs, Rian Murphy, Sean O'Hagan, Jim O'Rourke, Rick Rizzo. Singer-songwriter Edith Frost's full-length debut is a haunting, evocative collection of songs that tug gently at your sleeve and, once you're close enough, whisper strange, beautiful secrets in your ear that you'll never forget. Frost's largely acoustic music draws on country and folk traditions for its base, but, like labelmate Will Oldham, filters those traditions through a thoroughly modern artistic sensibility, like Lida Husik channeling the spirit of the Carter Family. The overall feel of CALLING OVER TIME, which features backing by members of Gastr del Sol and Stereolab, is one of sparse introspection. On many songs, she's accompanied by no more than one or two other instruments, but each element is perfectly placed. Just the right touch of piano or guitar adds immeasurably to the subtle, ethereal atmosphere. The ghostly desolation of the album is tempered by a constant undercurrent of warmth and naked emotion, making CALLING OVER TIME a journey you'll want to take again and again.
