A Callaway Fairway Wood for Non-Slicers

Callaway has always had a reputation for making playable fairway woods for weekend warriors; this club definately continues that tradition.

When I started with this grand game/addiction called golf, I loved all the game improvement features of Callaway fairway woods. The offset and soft shafts corrected my slice. The S2H2 design helped me release the clubhead. The VFT (variable face thickness) helped off-center hits maintain respectable distance.

Then I got better and all those Callaway slice-compensating features started working against me. Once I learned to swing correctly I started hooking the heck out of them. I re-shafted to a stiffer tip shaft and that helped a little. At least my hooks stayed on the hole I was playing! The problem was that my new tip stiff shaft lowered my ball flight a great deal. I was now scared to death of trying to carry a hazard.

So the search for a new fairway wood began. I tried Ping. I tried Cobra. I tried Taylor Made. I sold the Ping. I sold the Cobra. I broke my Taylor Made over a tree trunk and lied to my wife - told her it was an accident. (Irish temper - whoops!)

Then Callaway comes out with this little gem and it piqued my interest. Much less offset, a Fujikura shaft, a sole design that really makes sense.....hmmmm maybe worth a try. No kidding folks, three balls on the range and SOLD! We have a WINNER!

(Sidebar here - I play a Fujikura Speeder shaft in my driver and it really is worth the price. I know 2 bills is steep but how can you put a price on confidence off the tee?)

Anyway, back to the X....
The torque and tip stiffness of the shaft is just right for a mid 90s to low 100s swing speed. I can hit a fade, I can hit a draw, I can hit it straight. Best of all, I can hit it high. The S2H2 and VFT features are still there which is nice 'cause I'll always mis-hit one now and again. And the sole- what an idea!!! The two-point contact thing is a stroke of genius. It really helps you to line up the shot. All you have to do is place the club behind the ball and it seats itself. Now simply grip the club and take your stance and you're lined up with the ball in the correct position. It's almost impossible to hit fat or thin with this sole design.

Just a word of warning to the high handicapper - this ain't no Big Bertha. If you tend to slice the ball you might want to consider something else. (The Steelhead 3's are very good at helping a slice and can be had for a song. Ditto the ERC.) But for those of you out there who left Callaway as your game improved, take a look at this club. If you can, demo one for a round so you can really feel the benefits of this X sole design on different lies.

Good luck and many happy putts for eagles!!

DO NOT BUY GOLF CLUBS ON EBAY
Review created: 03/04/07
by:
14 of 40 people found this review helpful.

It's simple. DO NOT BUY GOLF CLUBS ON EBAY!!! It's just simply not worth the risk. I did get my money back from the seller, but the club was clearly not authentic. I see a lot of auctions out there that are clearly just as fraudulent, but the buyers don't know it. There is a difference between authentic clubs and knock-offs. If you can't tell, then it may not matter, but good clubs should make shot making easier. Knock-offs DO NOT. Save your money and buy only from reputable dealers or on-line golf proshops that can guarantee authenticity. DO NOT BUY FROM PERSONAL SELLERS!!!

Callaway X hot 3 fairway wood
Review created: 05/10/07

The X hot 3 wood is the longest 3 wood I have ever hit. The ball just jumps off the face of the club. It is by far the best 3 wood I have every hit. If I don't hit the par 5's in two, I just have a short pitch shot to the green. It is just as impressive when I tee off with the X hot.

Thanks,
Doug6469

after using this club, a few times, it is serving its intended purpose for me, which is a reliable club off the tee. this club is great from the tee box, it sets really nicely at address, without any manipulation. has a nice sound at impact and generally a pleasant, user friendly club but.....from the fairway, it doesn't seem to want to "get up". it is still playable, but i personally would like to see a higher ball flight, as im a high ball hitter. my handi is 11.

Callaway X Fairway Woods--No Mystery with This X!
Review created: 01/22/07(updated 10/08/08)
by:

After years of trading clubs for newer technology, I bought the Callaway VFT 3,5 and 7 woods. I loved their large titanium heads and the undeserved forgiveness they always brought me. They were easy to hit in the fairway, but not nearly so in the rough. When I read a review extolling the virtues of the Callaway X Fairway Woods, I decided to finally sell my old friends and try making some new friends. Two thumbs up to that decision.

The Callaway X Fairway Woods have decidedly smaller heads that allow them to cut through rough, unlike my old VFTs. Surprisingly, the X soles do help with set up. The heads give you a nice ping on center contact, but not as much "pow" as the VFTs. You can work the ball easily. They are darn good-looking clubs, too. The ball flight tends to be mid-trajectory as opposed to the high trajectory of my VFTs.

Unlike my VFTs, these X woods are NOT confidence builders. You must BYOG (bring your own game) with these bad boys. If you need forgiveness, leave the X woods in the rack. Unlike priests and most Callaways, you will find no forgiveness here. What you hit is what you get! Mis-hits sting and balls fly low to their final resting places which is usually not very far.

That said, there is a reason why the newest Golf Digest Club Review Issue still rates them as gold against the newest Callaway entry. They are that good and they are a bargain!

  Callaway X-Hot Fairway Wood
Review created: 07/03/07

I decided to but the club based on it's specifications (1" longer shaft, larger head size than standard 3-Woods) and some user reviews I read in golf publications. I didn't want to spend the money on a brand new club, as appearance is secondary to performance for me. As it turned out, the used club was practically new in all respects, and hardly distinguishable from a brand new club.
I am more than satisfied with the performance of the club. I am a senior golfer, and hit a LOT of 3-Wood shots! This is, by far, the best fairway wood I have ever used. It is easy to hit, consistent in performance even on off-center hits, and longer than any other fairway wood I have ever hit. This was the best purchase I have made on e-Bay.
I only wish that Callaway would come out with an equivalent Hot 5-Wood.

I HEART My Callaway X Fairway Woods!!!
Review created: 02/03/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Well, maybe it's a little early since I haven't actually played 18 yet (it's been too cold) but based on a couple of buckets at the driving range, these clubs are awesome. I scored a 4 and 7 wood with stiff Fujikura shafts here on eBay and saved a ton of cash. These club are replacing a Callaway Hawkeye 4+ and an Orlimar Tri-Metal 7 wood. The newer technology in the Xs really shows. Here's what sticks out for me: They are much more forgiving. I was hitting some shots I know shouldn't have gone straight and they were right down the middle. They also feel solid on most every shot. It's like hitting the sweet spot everytime you swing the club! And, they're very easy to launch from the deck (not tee'd up). I know I was hitting off a range mat but I don't remember my old woods being this easy to get up as high as these get - that consistantly. I'm hoping my experience with these clubs translates into my first 18 hole round in the 70's... see you on the links!!!

Watch Out for Callaway X Series Clones Being Sold
Review created: 01/29/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There is an almost perfect clone being sold on eBay and elsewhere of the Callaway X series. I was burned on eBay but got restitution. Make sure the seller has the real deal. Callaway corporate is all over this and eBay, as usual does not do much to police it.

I've always been partial to Callaway fairway woods. Played the Steelhead III's forever. I agree with the positive comments of the posters below about the X series fairways. Smaller head, somewhat less forgiving, good out of the turf, etc. I played a Firm shaft in the Steelhead III's but have a Fuji stock Stiff shaft in the X and it's a better shaft for me. Feels like it plays firm/stiff not stiff/stiff. My only complaint is the ball does not come off the face as hot as say the Callaway Heavenwood Hybrids. I'm going to try the X series Hot 3-wood that has the Carpenter steel face.

Finally got out today and hit the callaway 4 &5 iron hybrids. I really enloyed the way the ball came off the club head. Very little sound at contact and no vibration on impact. I am a 87-93 stroke player and these clubs I think will help me when I am in the rough.

This is an excellent club to have in your bag. It is easy to hit and forgiving on mis-hits. I use the club quite a bit in the course of a normal round of golf and I have found to be a valuable addition to my golf game.

I recently bid and won a Callaway X Five Wood. It is perfect. I have a driver and 3 wood to match so I knew what I was getting. I am a 12 to 14 handicaper and would highly recomend this club to any golfer. This is the second set of Callaway Woods I've had and I have no complaints about Callaway golf clubs.

  Callaway X 3-Wood, Stiff Fujikura 150 shaft 2006 model
Review created: 10/01/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Upon seeking replacements for my 10 + year-old Orlimar fairway woods, I hit a Titleist (can't recall what model) and a Callaway X 3-wood at Roger Dunn Golf. The Titleist felt like I was swinging a steel rod and the Callaway felt balanced, so being that they have a 90-day return (for store credit) policy, I chose the Callaway for $99.

The first time I hit it was on the course. I was pleasantly surprised. It swung easy, hits were consistently on center, balls went straight and long, and it even had a nice ping to it. In three rounds, I hit three par fives in regulation from about 220-250 yards, something that would rarely happen with the old Orlimars. So, since the 3-wood played very well, I sought a matching 5-wood and found one for about $100 (including shipping) on e-Bay. Haven't played it on the course yet, but I'm sure it won't disappoint. I absotively posilutely LOVE this club!!!

PROS: Deep face (for better contact surface), stock Fujikura shaft (shafts do make a difference!), balanced weighting (making it easy to swing), looks good at address, reasonably priced (used), and has a nice sound to it.

CONS: Somewhat difficult to get a used model in good condition. Easy to find on e-Bay but hard to win at a good price. Very few found at Roger Dunn used.

Callaway x Fairway wood, not what I was expecting
Review created: 09/05/08(updated 09/05/08)
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I tested a new Calaway X Fairway wood at a Golf shop and knew that I loved the UST V Force shaft. When I saw this club listed I decided to upgrade from my 3 yr old Titleist 3Wood. Whe the club arrived I liked its looks. At the range I was not able to hit even 1 shot that felt solid. Don't know why as I hit my Titleist solid about 80-90% of the time. I do not like this club and suspect that there is a flaw somewhere. I will look further into this problem. Perhaps I will ask one of the pros at the GolfSmith.

Best 3 wood I've ever hit!!!!!
Review created: 09/04/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been playing golf for nearly 25 years. I've hit countless clubs over tose years. Some high ends have promised to correct a slice, hook, etc. My friend bought this club & let me use it one day. The grip felt good, the face is shallow, and the balance felt really good. Then I hit it. WOW!!!! I hit it 245 yards dead straight. Normally my 3 woods that I've hit only have traveled 225 yards, with an unnatural fade to them. This 3 wood seems a little heavy on the bottom, but it helps you to hit down & through the ball, especially in light rough. I would highly recomend this 3 wood to any type of player, but buy the right kind of flex for your swing speed.
