In 1990, I bought a used set (3-SW) of Callaway S2H2 irons from my local Nevada Bob's for almost $600. Graphite shafts were new technology to the industry then and that added to the price. I think a brand new set cost over $1000 then and that was really big bucks. At the time, I'd only been playing golf for a year and my experience with the irons was mediocre, at best. I used them for 5 years and got my lowest scores with the S2H2s in my bag. In 1994, I read about titanium irons and other high-tech advances in clubs, so I set my S2H2s aside and bought a succession of different irons. Between 1994 and 2007, I've owned Cobras, Yonex, Mizuno and Callaway Fusions. Last month I took my old S2H2s to the range and was shocked at how well I hit them compared to any of my other iron sets. In summary, S2H2s are longer and straighter, but they were also more workable with better feel, than any irons I've ever played. I originally thought my distances were shorter because I'd put on a few years. These irons were more fun than I remembered. And they're, somehow, easier to hit than beefy/heavy newer irons. My conclusion is that I have a more repeating and consistent swing now than I had 12 years ago; the S2H2 is not for high handicappers. Many golfers have said that these were the BEST irons ever made. I can't disagree.
I just bought a second set so I could experiment updating the shafts and grips.
9/14/2007: I want to report a couple of updates. Recently I put a set of S2H2 irons with Memphis 10 steel shafts into my bag. I played them for about 6 rounds and a few days at the range. I found them to be forgiving with very nice feel and balance. I heard that steel shafts are more accurate and consistent than graphite, but graphite gets more distance. I'll have to agree with that assessment, but add that steel shafts feedback more vibration from miss-hits than graphite. Not a good thing if your hands take a while to recover.
Next I want to report that I've taken the major step of having Callaway upgrade my original Callaway/Aldila RCH 60 graphite shafts to the 2007 X-20 shafts. About the best golf equipment decision I've ever made. My appraisal after 4 rounds is that my S2H2 irons are now longer and more accurate than ever before. Trajectory is also higher than with the old shafts. One last point: With the new shafts, my clubhead speed increased 7mph due to the improved torque & kick-point. Please keep in mind that, as I write this, I'm 17 years older than when I originally purchased these irons in 1990.
