Call of Jaurez : Fun FPS, just not AMAZING

Graphics

When the game started I was very impressed with the graphics. Had me thinking of Oblivion, but not quite as good. Then I noticed time of day does not pass. Each episode has its own time of day. If the episode takes place during the day or night, you can stand there forever and it will always remain either day or night.

Very good lighting effects. Hiding at night only to be spotted when lightning strikes was very cool.

Great kill animations, lots of blood and dead body physics.

Quickly though you reach interiors, and I am not talking about inside buildings. I am talking about caves and such. The textures in these underground areas are very plain and practically all the same. Floors blend in with walls and ceilings.

Gameplay

Standard FPS stuff, done it all before so I will only list the problems I encountered.
Jumping is weird. Jumping on a box or a ledge parallel to you is fine. Jumping up to climb a ledge is not very smooth. Sometimes it took me like 3 or 4 tries to do it. And trying to do it during a gun fight, not recommended.

Picking up stuff is also not that smooth. Some stuff you have to get so close to and other stuff you can pick up without standing right on top of it. You can pick up boxes and crates and barrels, even some sort of wicker baskets can be interacted with. The only time this has ever come into practice for me is when your progress is halted and you MUST build some sort of stepping apparatus to continue on. Otherwise, no need to ever pick up these types of items, though they are all over the place.

Using your whip as a swinging device fells very generic. It is almost like a point and click adventure game trying to find the exact spot to whip your whip. Hmmm...

Enemy A.I is ok. They take cover, which fps game these days do they not do that. Sometimes though they will stand right in front of you while they load their weapon. Right out in the open. Not too smart.

The hardest time I had was that in certain areas it is very difficult to find exactly where your enemy is (talking about SP, not MP). They are shooting at you but its hard to pick up the direction of the bullets. And you will spin the camera around everywhere trying to find who it is. Now this does make the game challenging and I am all for that but I would have liked a little more information to help me find them. Such as being able to decipher bullet direction via what you see. And listening intently on my 5.1 audio for the sound direction of fire. Even though someone is shooting behind you, I never just heard it on my rear speakers, instead I heard it on all of them.

It is also kinda strange that you control 2 characters yet they do not share their "special" abilities. Which basically means 1 character can climb up ledges and the other can not. 1 character can use a bow, but the other can not. 1 can hold their breath underwater and the other, you know. I just made that last one up... Seeing if the people who played the game to this point have read this far.

Save points: sStrategically placed and not a problem.

Overall

The game is not bad. Yet it is not great. I do agree with scores anywhere from 7.0 to 8.5 on any review website which is to say some people will shift to the 7.0 side; thinking it is just 1 step up from a mediocre game. And people close to the 8.5 will think it is just 1 step down from a great, wish this becomes a new franchise, awesome game.

Fun game, but just a 7/10 though for me.

  YOUNG GAMERS...BEWARE!!!! COOL GAME...OLD FARTS!!!!
Review created: 06/08/07(updated 06/09/07)
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

FIRST OF ALL, THIS IS A '[{MATURE}]' GAME!!!!! YOU YOUNG GAMERS WILL NOT EVEN LIKE IT!! YOU OLD GAMERS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN STORYLINES (AND IS IT A GOOD STORY!!!) WILL LIKE IT.

IT'S KINDA WEIRD AT FIRST, BECAUSE YOU PLAY AS 1ST PERSON, (i.e. THE INVISIBLE HANDS, YOU CAN ONLY SEE YOUR FEET AND SHADOW) BUT IT IS EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE TO DRAW YOU INTO THE STORY. YOU WILL BE ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT AND YOU WILL DIE......ALOT.....(AT THE BEGINNING.) YOU START OUT THE GAME AS REV. RAY, AND A GATTLIN' GUN SHOOTIN' MEXICANS (SEE? MY E-BAY NAME SAYS IT ALL). THEN, YOU GO TO BILLY, A SCRAWNY KID WHO MIXES UP W/ REV. RAY, AT THE HOME OF HIS MOM AND STEP-DAD, WHO, COINCIDENTALLY ARE FOUND MURDERED..... IT TAKES A LITTLE WHILE TO GET USED TO THE CONTROLS/ACTIONS OF THE TWO OF THEM, BUT AS I SAID EARLIER; IT ALL STARTS TO PAY OFF AFTER A LITTLE WHILE. THE STORY IS REALLY COOL. IT IS NOT LIKE "GUN" AS EVERYONE LOVES TO SAY!!!

IT IS A SOMEWHAT DARK GAME, BOTH LITERALLY AND METAPHORICALLY. THE GRAPHICS ARE VERY, VERY BEAUTIFUL, BUT I HAVE THE BRIGHTNESS AND PICTURE ALL THE WAY UP, AND IT STILL SEEMS A LITTLE DARK TO ME. I SUPPOSE THAT IS TO MATCH THE STORY LINE. IN THE TOWNS, THIS IS ANNOYING, ESPECIALLY DURING A GUN-FIGHT, BUT DOES NOT DETRACT FROM THE GAMEPLAY.

I CAN NOT SAY THIS ENOUGH! IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE YOUR HOMEWORK WITH THIS ONE, SEEN WHAT THE STORY IS ALL ABOUT, ETC...YOU PROBABLY WON'T LIKE IT. MARK MY WORDS, THIS IS A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER, ALRIGHT; BUT THERE IS A LOT TO IT. MOVING BOXES, ESCAPING & HIDING IS PRETTY MUCH KEY TO THIS FPS. YOUR HEALTH IS SIMILAR TO CALL OF DUTY 2, WHEN YOU SEE RED....HIDE! THE STORY MOVES KINDA SLOW AT FIRST, BUT THEN IS VERY ENGROSSING AND IS HARD TO PUT DOWN. AND....YOU DON'T SPEND AN ETERNITY PLAYING ONE OR THE OTHER. OBVIOUSLY, REV. RAY IS THE BEST TO PLAY, BUT BILLY HAS A WHIP...HEH-HEH-HEH!!!

ALL TRUTH BE TOLD.....FOR AS COOL AS THE STORY LINE IS, FOR ALL THE GORGEOUS GRAPHICS THERE ARE, THIS IS DEFINATELY A RENTAL GAME. TRY IT FIRST, THEN IF YOU LIKE IT, BUY IT. HOWEVER, THE REPLAY VALUE IS VERY LOW. THERE IS REALLY NO CHARACTER INTERACTION OR "REAL-OPEN-GAMEPLAY" WITH THIS, SO SOMETIMES YOU'LL FEEL AS IF YOU'RE BEING 'TUNNELED' INTO GAMEPLAY.

YOU'LL PROBABLY PLAY THIS ONE ONCE OR TWICE......AFTER THAT, IT'LL BE A "LOW-GRADE" TRADE-IN.

Finally, a good western for the 360!

When you begin to play Call of Juarez, you will notice that the surrounding landscape looks a lot like Oblivion. The noticeable differences from Oblivion are that sneaking is difficult and you can never level up to achieve better sneaking and if you try to walk down the steep hill you will take a tumble (and your character will die). So maybe it's not as flawless and expansive as Oblivion, it is still a great time and worth playing.

You follow a linear storyline (there is no escape from this), where you are Billy Candle, a half-Mexican thief just trying to make it home to Ma and Reverend Ray, Billy's Step Uncle and once legendary gunfighter turned reverend. When you arrive at Ma's as Billy, your Ma and stepfather are dead and Ray thinks you did it and so sets forth to hunt you down. In this game, you alternate between playing Ray and Billy in each episode. Along the way you will begin to see that Billy is part of a greater plan, and that he is destined to find the gold of the nasty evil Juarez.

Like an intense movie, the story flows amazingly well, the dialogue is very well written, and each and every episode is so entertaining it will keep you hooked to the system, not wanting to walk away. The little segments before each episode are funny and entertaining as well. The creators' love of westerns is apparent, as is their sense of humor. They have even inserted themselves into the game in the form of hidden wanted posters that you can collect for achievement points, which gives you a reason to open every trunk you can find and actually look at the little details of the game. When you have finished the game, fear not, because there are three extra episodes (where you are a sheriff) and a lot of duels left to play. You can also duel people online.

Call of Juarez is a must play for any fan of the Western genre.

I liked "GUN" quite a bit so I picked up this game. It is fun and has a good story, but there is usually only one pathway through this game with little freedom to take alternate paths. The graphics are decent for a budget game. The "flow" of the game can get interupted with a task that cannot be figured out without jumping online and looking up the walkthrough. Over all I can't complain for the price I paid, but I often loose interest while playing and stick in something else.

  Stick-em up, partner!
Review created: 10/07/07

Call of Juarez tries a different take on the first person genre by setting it in the old west; a welcome change from the typical si-fi/war themes that exist.

The most striking feature of the game are its graphics and they are good. In particular, the lighting effects and high dynamic used makes everything seem more natural. Going beyond graphics and western setting, Call of Juarez is surprisingly average despite all the numerous minor additions to game play. For example, two protagonists that you alternate between, quick-draw matches with end bosses, ability to ride horses (even though they may be sparse). Ultimately the blame can be laid on the main story, which is not strong enough to set it apart from other shooters, and the level design, which again is not original/unique enough. There are exceptions, such as the part where you search for Juarez’s gold but most levels are quite bland.

That it not to say this is a bad game, it is just an average shooter in an very crowded market. The single player campaign will keep players interested for its span. A worthy rental for the FPS fan but not worth owning.

7.0 / 10

The game is vey good, which is not easy to find these days (not Including Bioshock)... This is a pure action and a lot of Fun and a Great Storyline!!!

The Shortcoming of this game is that it is too short! but the Extras make up for it so if you Can get this game BUY IT ON EBAY!

Enjoy if you Decide to purchase it and if not, No matter, Just Enjoy! :-)

Call of Juarez is right up my alley, bringing the player to an era in history that I love to admire. With realistic weapon sounds to the sound of a lost peaceful forest somewhere in Texas a century before I was born, this game is one of my favorites along with GUN 360. I bought it, because I knew I was going to like it.

It was different. Got in on Ebay , so it in the end it only cost me a few bucks to play, finish and sell it again.

I thought it was better than the reviews I read about it stated.

Didn't take long to finish, but worth the money and the turn around sale.

  Smooth Game Play
Review created: 06/30/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I like that this games game play is smooth and you can skip cut scenes.

Also that you are playing two caracters alternatively and each had individual features that make them different.

One caracter has a 'concentration' mode for quick draw and one has the ability to climb.

The plot all comes together better than a lot of games I have seen.

It has wonderful graphics and lighting.

Only thing I could want for is a longer game.

  Heed the Call!
Review created: 06/21/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The good: Good graphics, Nice control scheme, okay voice acting, 2 playable characters, one character is about run and gun, the other is about sneaking which adds some nice depth and change to this FPS, the ability to read the bible and shoot people (wtf?), a good story, great music that seems well times to what is going on in the game. nice story length.

The Bad: Some of the platforming doesn't work well with an FPS game, Some levels are frustrating, good level design on most levels but some are boring, you die a little too easily even on easy mode, the sneaking of billy's character doesn't work as well as I'd hoped it would

The ugly: the price point for this game seems a little high for what it is.

Overall a good western themed game, but sometimes it feels a bit like they missed the mark a little on capturing what the old west was about. I personally feel like they made a mistake by making it a first person shooter. This is a good game, although I think if you want a better western game you could do yourself a big favor and pick up GUN instead.

  DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
Review created: 01/31/09

This game was a waste of my money. I thought it was going to be like the call of duty games. Man was I ever wrong. The graphics stink, the story line ( at least to the point that I got until I got rid of it) sucks, and when you FINALLY get a weapon its so hard to aim and shoot. I think they just came out with this one to try and leach off of the call od duty franchise. TWO THUMBS DOWN.

As always Xbox has gone above and beyond with the graphics. What the creator of this game forgot was a story line. I bought this game for my 16 year old son and he rarely plays it. Not sure what age group would enjoy this game, but I would try the demo before spending any money to buy it.
