There is no shortage of World War II-themed first-person shooters available, and it's no secret that a number of them, including Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Battlefield 1942, are extremely good. Now you can add Call of Duty to that list. The first game by Infinity Ward, a studio composed of some of the same team that worked on Allied Assault, Call of Duty presents outstanding action all around and is at least as good as, and in several ways is simply better than, any similar game. Though both its single-player and multiplayer modes will be familiar to those who've been keeping up with the WWII-themed shooters of the past several years, most anyone who plays games would more than likely be very impressed with Call of Duty's authentic presentation, well designed and often very intense single-player missions, and fast-paced, entertaining multiplayer modes.

Call of Duty's distinguishing features, by and large, can't be considered innovations--that's too strong of a word. However, this is a game that pulls together many of the best aspects of other, similar games, and also includes all sorts of little "wish-list items" that may have crossed your mind while playing those other games. The result seems, above all, very well designed. The action in Call of Duty, ultimately, is arcadelike--much like in Allied Assault or Battlefield 1942. You can't survive a shot to the head, but you can take a few bullets anywhere else and can keep going just fine. There's also a clear onscreen indication of the direction from which you're taking fire (and, as you're getting hit, the screen shudders to make it look like it hurts). Luckily, first aid kits, conveniently placed in the levels or occasionally dropped by killed enemies, instantly restore large portions of your health. You hardly ever need to activate a "use" key in this game. When you do, you'll use it to instantly set explosives or grab documents, but you won't use it for opening doors.

Actually, that's because you won't be opening any doors. One gameplay contrivance that's presented in the first few seconds of the first mission is that any time you see a closed door in Call of Duty, it's supposed to stay closed. This seems like a minor point, but how many shooters have you played in which you fumbled for every doorknob, trying to find the one door that would actually open? That's simply not an issue in Call of Duty. Despite the highly authentic atmosphere created for the levels in the game, there tends to be an intuitive, clear path from the beginning of the level to the end. The levels can be challenging, at least at the higher two of the game's four difficulty settings, but they're not frustrating. If you die, you can restart at your most recent save almost instantly. You don't need to worry about hitting the quick-save key all the time, either, since the game automatically and seamlessly saves your progress not just at the beginning of a level but at several points throughout the level. The game's brief tutorial at the beginning of the single-player mode will be second nature for experienced players of first-person shooters. However, since it's in the context of a military boot camp, it will also provide, for new and experienced players alike, some valuable advice on (and practice with) the nuances of Call of Duty's gameplay.

Call of duty is a must have for any 360 owner, all gameplay is fantastic.

I don't understand how some people can think it is bad

I read the reviews elsewhere on this and I was not sure if I was going to get it.
I think they were wrong.
I own Call of Duty 3 for the XBox 360.
Reviews said Call of Duty 4 was "More of the Same".
I don't know if it is the PS3 or the Duty 4, but this game is alot better than Duty 3 on my 360. The Smoke effects are better. The Water is amazing... Damn shot again starring at the water...
I noticed something in Resistance Fall of man that is also present in this game, Everything is alive. The Grass whisps in the wind, this makes the environment come alive.
I think Resistance does the Ambiance better, but it is nicely done here too.
Swinging the Sixaxis as if to do a Rifle Butt causes your on screen character to do a Rifle Butt... Cool...
The Driving Sequences using the Sixaxis takes a little getting used to, however you can still drive via the Analog stick as well.
Graphics are Very nice, I did not see the Frame Rate Problems spoke of by the Reviewer. The Sound is very good. I did not give the Sound a 10 though because after playing Resistance where there is more clips of audio from the AI characters, I found hearing the same thing over and over again to be very "Last Gen" of Course my "Next Gen" 360 has the same problem. I think it stems from people starting to use the Extra capacity available on the BluRay disc.

Free Online Thanks to Sony. Goodbye XBox Live. Until Microsoft gives Live for Free, I will not renew. The Microsoft Fanboys keep trying to convince me that the Xbox Live is somehow better, well... after using them both I can not see the "greatness" that constitutes $50 a year.

If you liked Call of Duty 3, You will love Call of Duty 4.
Man I could sit here all day Whiping my Sixaxis all day. Rifle Butt. Rifle Butt. Yes. Yes. Yes.
I hope they keep adding these little touches to the Future PS3 games.

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. I wouldn't jeopardize my eBay account status if this was a scam. My feedback is real and I will answer you on any question! Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3 different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free Xbox 360 Elite or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 4 week free trial and it is free!). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 5-20 friends (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay, message boards, or tell your friends. You'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.

Then they will ship your free Xbox 360 or your selected item for free, I chose the Xbox 360 Elite. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY or any message boards, blogs, face book, my space or any place you hang out at. ! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc...   Sweetest graphics I've ever seen

If you could choose between Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and Bioshock it'd be a tough choose. For me it'd be between Halo or COD4, even though i'd choose Halo 3 every time COD 4 makes a very close 2nd place. Short campaign but the multiplayer has improved so much since it's earlier games. If you have a 360 Xbox Live and a fully functional brain you'd get COD4 in a heartbeat. Plus if you get it on ebay u mite be able to get 40 at the lowest so nothing to complain about here

One of the best games of 2007
Review created: 04/28/09
by:

CoD4 is probably one of the best games I have played in a long while. (But don't get me wrong, CoD:WaW was good too) Anyway, although the single player campaign is not absolutely perfect, I did enjoy the story a lot, as it ties somewhat into real life. One thing I had a problem with, though, was that I was never fond of the infinitely spawning enemies in both games as well as past titles, that don't stop until you cross an invisible line to make your teammates move. Also, Veteran difficulty was made way too difficult for my tastes, which also applies to all of the other games as well. Dial it down a bit (at least for Modern Warfare 2) and I'll be happy. The multiplayer, I did enjoy as well, although I completely sucked at it), but yeah. 9/10

Great game. I only play for its online action which, in my opinion, is where the game truly shines. A great upgrade and way better than the previous 3. I switched from being a halo 3 fan and never looked back.
